how many times you just close an icq when all you get is...a hello

just hello

i close them..im not a mind reader..lol

Screaming 10-20-2005 02:01 PM

every last 1. i figure them 2 be spam. you would think that all webmasters would be smart enuff to announce "hey im from this and want to do this, this isnt spam" but it seems alot dont

dynastoned 10-20-2005 02:01 PM

i usually say hi back then ill get a question.

woj 10-20-2005 02:12 PM

I usually ask them what then want, and close it....

RuthB 10-20-2005 02:14 PM

whenever I hit up someone I've not spoken to before (or for a while) I'll usually introduce myself and ask how they are.. and wait for a response - I don't want to type an essay and find that that message didn't make it through

ICQ's a funny thing - I get SO many Turkish and Indian guys trying to 'chat' to me it's unreal - but cos I never know who's who I just accept everyone and then ignore/delete if it turns out they're a surfer or spammer - but I'd not close a window if they just said 'hello' unless I knew for sure that they weren't involved in this industry - ynever know where the next bout of great traffic is gonna come from - so why turn down a potential opportunity if it doesn't hurt you to respond? :2 cents:

It depends if its from a hot chick or a guy.

hahah WG you're too funny.

I don't - normally I add them to my list, say hello back & ask what I can do for them. Since my comp is on 24hrs, 99% of the time it's from a foreign webmaster who has questions before joining but wants to make sure I'm there before they write.

justsexxx 10-20-2005 02:22 PM

I say hello back followed with a "how can I help you". 9 times out of 10 it is a legit webmaster or potential webmaster with a question. And if it isn't, the delete and ignore buttons work great :)

assmunk 10-20-2005 02:30 PM

I think just sending a 'hello' is appropriate before telling them your life story, or your plans, ideas, requests, whatever.

why? because it helps to determine whether the person you're babbling to is there or not. 'status' doesnt mean sh*t. :2cents

Zester 10-20-2005 02:33 PM

I say in 1 breath: "hi, I'm Zester, I'm promoting ****bucks.net and I just wanted to ask WHY THE FUCK DO YOU GUYS SUCK ASS SO MUCH !?!?!?!"

than I get great support

Sly 10-20-2005 02:47 PM

A group of us were talking about this once at some show, I think you were there. I answer all of them but Goddamn is it annoying. What really bothers me is when somebody is from a different part of the world, they know we're in different time zones, yet they don't leave a message. We then continue the conversation over the next 3-4 days.

Please people, leave a message! I use ICQ as an answering machine, it saves both parties a lot of time.

Makingcoin 10-20-2005 02:48 PM

Just sent you a message!

smack 10-20-2005 02:49 PM

i hate that shit. one of the guys i work with has a bad habit of just saying "Sup?" then disspearing for a half an hour.

i get text messages like that all the time too. i don't feel like playing 20 questions to figure out wtf you want. combine two sentences, it's easy. look.

"What's up? I had a question about [Insert Topic here]"

see, there you go, your greeting, and your reason for contacting me all in on simple little line.

adultchica 10-20-2005 02:50 PM

I don't reply to just hellos. It's usually a spammer. Announce yourself!

Yeah I mean really.. it isn't that hard :1orglaugh

myjah 10-20-2005 02:52 PM

Never. I never intentionally close an ICQ without responding to it first.

"Hey, I'm one of your affiliates, was wondering if I could get a password?"

Short, pretty, to the point, and sweet. Just like me.

A "Hello, this is assmunk from gfy" would probably work 10x better though...

I get that on Skype -- either wanting to flirt or practice English. So many and so annoying that I've started ignoring most Skype calls. Unless I know you and know you're calling, I think you should do a text chat intro before you do voice. Maybe I'm picky.

"Hello PlugInFeeds-Ron"

"Hello [insert name]"

"I have something I want to tell you PlugInFeeds-Ron"

"What would you like to tell me [insert name]?"

"I have something I want to tell you PlugInFeeds-Ron"

"Welcome to my ignore list [insert name]"

wasn't that what i said to you the first time we talked?

(hint:the answer is YES IT WAS) :D

baddog 10-20-2005 03:24 PM

When you get a phone call, don't you respond "hello?"

That is how I would initiate an ICQ conversation, just making sure someone is there.

Of course, you have to be authorized to contact me, so I get zero spam . . . except from people already authorized

Dalai lama 10-20-2005 03:25 PM

Unless I can answer them right away I close them.
