There's many different kinds of violence. The Japanese media and Japanese culture in general regard violence as a stylized form of achieving catharsis while maintaining relative peace and order. In a sense, the ultra violence of manga culture expiates individual angst and isolates it into a relatively harmless, albeit horrific, format. Other cultures view violence differently. Maybe there's something to learn there....

Perhaps he was referring to violence wherein there is a strong urge to inflict pain for self gratification only. Yes, that is the real world.
