Why is bottled water more expensive than gas?

and also, why is coke cheaper than water if the #1 ingrediant is water and coke has to be processed while bottled water is from the source?

everybody complains about the price of fucking gas and then spends so much more $ per gallon on bottled water when it's free from the tap.

ironic.

EroticySteve 08-15-2005 10:51 AM

My car doesn't use 20 gallons of bottled water per week. Frankly if cars ran on water I'd filter my own. I don't care how much bottled water is, gas is still doo damn expensive.

Fresh 08-15-2005 10:51 AM

Why is gas $3 in LA?

KRL 08-15-2005 10:52 AM

How do you figure?

I buy a gallon of Zephyrhills Natural Spring Water for about $1.19. And its worth every penny.

Peaches 08-15-2005 10:52 AM

Yeah, there was a programme on here a few months back about bottled water. They did tests to see who could actually tell the difference, hardly anyone could...

Because here in California, it's against the law to sell gasoline that has not been refined here in California... and we have a limited number of refineries, with one that is closing east of Bakersfield in Tehachapi.

As for the bottled water question. It can be much more expensive than gas if you buy it in 20 ounce bottles often at more than a buck a piece.
Only reason it costs so much is because idiots will buy it thinking they are getting something that they are not. It almost always is bottled tap water, just with less restrictions on how clean it must actually be.
Again coke is less expensive due to the marketing of water, idiots like bottled water.
Yes coke has to be manufactured and processed, yet do not think water is bottled at the source. It often just comes from treatment plants and or municiple water supply companies. Read the label sometime.

Peaches 08-15-2005 11:01 AM

Even though our water is from our lake, the last two reports have found less than desirable levels of toxic chemicals in it. I buy whatever bottled water is on sale at the grocery for drinking and cooking.

And last time I bought milk it was almost $4 a gallon - I guess it's gone down :)

Thumbking 08-15-2005 11:01 AM

gas here is 1.04$ a Litre :Oh crap

and my truck loves to drink it :error

mechanicvirus 08-15-2005 11:03 AM

Because you need water to survive? I'd say water is worth every last cent, while gas is not.

chowda 08-15-2005 11:04 AM

Which is why I just spent $5K on a water treatment system for our house. Here in Tulare County there are more cows than people and milk is still outrageous.

SetTheWorldonFire 08-15-2005 11:08 AM

If it's not at some place where I am forced to buy it like magic mountain or something. I buy water at 25 cents a gallon.

Think about it. You can refill your bottled water for 25 cents. plus it's a vending machine heh

4My 08-15-2005 11:10 AM

So guy, I am curious to know what you think about

In 10 year what gonna cost more ... gaz or water ?

Same shit here . Prices went up from around $0.82 / L to $1.03 / L within a couple of days. What the hell happened ? Is the 3rd World War coming or something ? :helpme

Peaches 08-15-2005 11:13 AM

I live in a resort town where more and more people are moving and commuting to Atlanta. I would love gas to hit about $5 a gallon and people would stop moving here :)

Guess we're kinda spoiled over here. The tap water is heck of a lot better than any bottled water.

Pete-KT 08-15-2005 11:18 AM

Because bottled water is a fad, and they know people will pay for it

The worst is the companies that sell bottled tap water. LOL people think that just cuz it's from a store shelf it's better.

Hollywood Horwitz 08-15-2005 11:51 AM

i just saw a cnn special on this, they compared the cost of gas to starbucks coffee, bottled water, nasal spray etc.... it was interesting but who the hell buys multiple gallons of coffee or water in a week....

JJ Gold 08-15-2005 11:52 AM

People who complain about the price of gasoline do not understand economics and are nothing more than whining little bitches.

Only reason it pisses me off is the current price of Diesel in California. I could care less about the unleaded prices for the most part. Sure it is expensive but I can put most of my car trips into 1-2 days errands, drive less and so on.
Though with Diesel already at 3.15 a gallon and still rising, that shit really hits home. Nothing I own uses diesel, though nearly everything I buy is effected by the cost of diesel. So this one is hitting me hard since it is fairly difficult to cut back on this and like stop eating or whatnot.

I buy at least 5 gallons of water every week. $1.25

mardigras 08-15-2005 12:05 PM

There is no gallon of water in my local store more expensive than a gallon of gas. 2-2 liters of coke is a bit more than a gallon and still cheaper than any gallon of gas here...

Excellent point. Eventually this has to be a bigger drag on the economy but things seem to be rolling along and inflation is relatively in check.

I have a friend that drives an old diesel Benz. She was loving the prices for years but now is constantly saying "what the fuck!?!". :1orglaugh

The Truth Hurts 08-15-2005 12:06 PM

because people are fucking stupid... but have you ever tasted water thats
been tampered with with chlorine and flouride and whatever the fuck else they're adding to clean it now?

my water comes right out of the ground into my house..
no interference.

drive a mile away and the public water (to me) is completely undrinkabe.

I never understood people who cry over gas prices (not even talking about the big picture such as increased airfares bla bla, just filling up your own car). That's just so fucking dumb. So you pay $100 (NOT EVEN) or whatever more every month.. so fucking what? People waste too much time crying over gas prices.

Never understood why Diesel is more expensive than gas in the States when in Canada it's usually 5 to 10 cents a litre cheaper. I have diesel burning car and get 1200KM on a $40cdn tank.

Well, when the price stays high enough to affect everything you purchase... don't whine, biaaach :upsidedow

It generally is cheaper and always has been. That is the odd part.

Do you think all of the companies who's products you consume are just going to eat the cost of rising fuel? :1orglaugh

DutchTeenCash 08-15-2005 12:13 PM

had bottled water in London once expensive restaurant $38 for .75 litre some norwegian spring water... didnt know till I saw the bill :)

Mardigras continues to refuse to look at the cost of energy as a percentage of GDP and therefore still does not get it.

I said I wasn't talking about the big picture. I hear people say they fill up half a tank just because it reached $2.57/gallon. WHAT THE FUCK. My bread at Wild Oats got more expensive yesterday by $1.5. Things fucking fluctuate. People like to be scared of rising gas prices, and it's all because of the god damn media.

38 $ for a bottle of water 0_o I hope the straw was free of charge :S

My water is also untreated and supposedly fresh. We have nothing but rainwater coming down the mountains into our lake. That's why it was so depressing to see the chemical reports :(

I know people around here with wells are told to use bottled water for infants. Apparently some of the things that aren't filtered out at water processing plants can make babies sick.

BRISK 08-15-2005 12:25 PM

You'd think people in the adult industry would know a thing or two about selling a fantasy. :ugone2far

People aren't buying water in a bottle anymore than porn surfers buy JPEGs or MPEGs. They buy what the water represents, an image of health and vitality, an escape to the fresh outdoors of the Rocky Mountains or French Alps. They buy a story that fits their worldview. It's not necessarily a conscious rational decision, but it doesn't matter, people pay $2 for a bottle of water because perception is more important than reality.
