A Riddle Thread!

If you know a riddle, post one - if you don't, try to figure one out someone else posts.

Here's mine:

A frog is hopping along and falls into a well. Upon climbing out; every day the frog climbs three steps and every night falls 2 steps back.

How many days would it take the frog to get out of the well?

grumpy 07-26-2005 06:55 AM

maybe you should mention how deep the well is.

yeah but.. upon coming out
doesn't that mean he already climbed out

No, as weird as that sounds, it means "as he is climbing out".

I assure you, the only mistake I made was leaving out the feet. :)

And how many feets does a step measure ?

grumpy 07-26-2005 07:52 AM

its not easy to write down a riddle.

luv$ 07-26-2005 08:02 AM

Ok, here, I'm going to rewrite this bitch, this is exactly how it should sound:

A frog is hopping along and falls into a 50 foot well. Every day the frog climbs three feet up and every night falls 2 feet back down.

How many days would it take the frog to climb out of the well?

Platinum Red 07-26-2005 08:07 AM

i did not know the frogs could climb

fucking easy... the 48'th day he reaches the top and why would he slide down again if he is out

Because he's averaging a foot a day, so by day 47 he's 3 feet from the top. Once he makes it to the top, he's out and won't fall back another 2 feet causing him an extra day :winkwink:

Thanks for answering A Fox. If you're going to Internext I'll buy you a drink. :)

Cool, okay, now does anyone else have a riddle to post? If not I got another for ya, it's a bit more difficult.

I have one for you ... and this is a TRUE story:

Post office gets a letter with the following address:

WOOD
MASS

there was no return address
Because none of the postal workers could figure out where to deliver the letter it sat in the dead letter section for two years.
After two years a new postal worker was assigned to the dead letter office.
His job was to figure out how to deliver the items .. the next day this letter was delivered.
Can you figure out who and where to deliver the letter?

mmhmmrm.

vicki 07-26-2005 09:22 AM

Another one to keep the brain juices flowing :)

100 prisoners are locked up in prison. Each prisoner in his own cell. They cannot communicate with each other, except for the one afternoon when they all arrived in prison.

Every day, the warden picks one prisoner at random and brings him to a
room with a lightbulb and a lightswitch. The lightbulb is in whatever
state it was left the day before. The prisoner can now choose from 3
things:
1) he leaves things as it is
2) he toggles the lightswitch
3) he states that all 100 prisoners have been in this room at least
once.

After option 1 or 2, the prisoner is brought back to his cell. If the
prisoner decided to go for option 3, but he is wrong, they are all
executed. If he is right, they all go free.

Given that the prisoners are aware of this evil game that the warden is
going to play with them, what is the strategy they should decide on the
day they arrived in prison, when they could still talk to each other?
Assume the prisoners know the bulb is initially at the off position.

Note: random means random. It may happen that the same prisoner is
chosen 2, 3, or more days in a row.

That's okay, the prisoner one is worse.

I'll post another one here, probably easier than yours:

A woman works on the 34th floor. Every morning she goes to the 20th floor and walks the other 14 flights of stairs, and every night she takes the elevator straight down.

Only when it rains does she take the elevator directly to the 34th floor.

Why does she do this?

They are outdoor stairs? Or the 20th floor is an outdoor floor.

Elli 07-26-2005 10:05 AM

btw, the frog question is not a riddle. It's a math problem. Riddles make you challenge logic and process. Math questions make you grab a calculator.

Nope. :)

Try challenging logic and process :)

Elli 07-26-2005 10:08 AM

I'm going to take a stab at the prisoner one, though I usually suck at these.

The inmates should decide that the first person only should flip the switch to 'on'. Then if anyone finds it in the off position after that, they know a) the warden is messing with them or b) there's a new prisoner in the mix. So after it's been switched to off, then can guess option 3?

Errr.. that doesn't even make complete sense.

She's a midget and cannot reach the 34th floor button without the aid of her umbrella.

oh crap, that's right. I've heard that one before, too.

*bash head against wall. repeat.*

Tala 07-26-2005 10:17 AM

If the original position is OFF, then the first chosen turns it on.
Next person turns it off. Next person turns it on. etc.

Should someone be chosen who has already flipped the switch, he will leave it alone. Thus no changes occur and felllow prisoners know not to count that night's lighting.

By counting the changes, they can wait until all one hundred of them have flipped the switch.

I can only imagine that this one has something to do with a bigger word being made from the two words... something like, "Mass Underwood".... or something like that. (but I still can't figure it out)... "Woodover Massachusetts".. I dunno.

MacDaddyPlaya 07-26-2005 10:28 AM

A man lives by a river and has only a 5 gallon bucket and a 3 gallon bucket. Using only these two buckets how can the man get exactly 4 gallons of water?

although thats a good guess it would not work because the prisoners cannot communicate any longer ... only the prisoner who is chosen after the one that makes 'no changes' would be aware there were 'no changes'.
The final prisoner would not know he shouldn't have counted that one or any of the other 'no changes'.

Here's one without math. It is answered using only the information provided.

---three people are found dead in a cabin in the middle of the woods.
how did they die?

Fill up 3 gallon bucket. Dump it in 5 gallon bucket.
Fill up 3 gallon bucket. Top off 5 gallon bucket leaving 1 gallon in 3 gallon bucket.

Empty 5 gallon bucket. Pour 1 gallon left in 3 gallon bucket into it.
Fill 3 gallon bucket again and pour it into the 1 gallon left in 5 gallon bucket.

OOOoooooo close ... keep pondering!!! *eek* if someone beats my 8 hours my ego will take a mighty blow hahaha

btw only ONE person I've told this riddle to in the past 15 years has solved it and he had a hint from me

I'll post the hint below .. for those NOT wanting the hint ... do not read below this line!

my hint - what helped me was the fact that I used to be a nationwide telemarketing manager (no throwing rotten tomatoes .. i was the MANAGER! lol) and knew alot of city names

This is a simple math problem.

Fill the 3 gallon bucket and pour it into the 5 gallon bucket.
Fill the 3 gallon bucket again, and pour it into the 5 gallon, only 2 gallons will go into the 5 gallon which already has 3 gallons. So no you're left with 1 gallon in the 3 gallon bucket.

Empty the 5 gallon bucket and pour your 1 gallon into the 5 gallon bucket. Then fill your 3 gallon bucket again and pour it into the 5 gallon. You now have 4 gallons in the 5 gallon bucket.

ONLY being the keyword. There is no mention of a plane and therefore that CAN NOT be part of the solution.
