Do you have "emergency cash" hidden?

I have about $4K that I've had for years because I was always worried my son (or someone) might need bail money. I still keep it and dip into it when I need cash and the banks are closed and then I add back later.

Now I figure if there's ever a banking emergency that will give me a months worth of necessities to cover.

I know one webmaster who used to keep $$$ in his freezer (and the old timers will know who I'm talking about :thumbsup )

Anyone else keep emergency cash stashed away? How much? And more importantly, where exactly is it (address, where the extra key is hidden, where it is in the house, etc. :winkwink: )?

Dalai lama 07-25-2005 07:01 AM

I do keep emergency cash yes. About 2.5k euros

pornstar2pac 07-25-2005 07:02 AM

i keep money in old ladies purses and take when i need it.

Pete-KT 07-25-2005 07:04 AM

Ya ive got extra cash hidden in the house, never know when yo might need it, ive actually used it a few times and then return it the next day

xenigo 07-25-2005 07:05 AM

I used to a while back, after I actually did have a banking emergency. I went to withdraw cash to pay a model - and found out the ATM card had recently expired. Had me pretty freaked out, so I withdrew some extra to keep on hand after that.

DaddyHalbucks 07-25-2005 07:11 AM

Definitely a good idea. Another thing to keep in mind is that ATMs/ debit cards often have daily transaction limits, regardless of your balance or credit worthiness. So, if you need a large chunk of money in a hurry, it's best to have a cash reserve at home.

Tom_PM 07-25-2005 07:14 AM

I havent had cash in my house (besides some semi-rare coins and bills) in very many years.. I just never use cash, and dont have extra to stuff in a coffee can around the house :)

BT 07-25-2005 07:16 AM

Yes good credit

AsianDivaGirlsWebDude 07-25-2005 07:27 AM

I tried that a few times, but goddamnit, I keep forgetting where I hid it!?!

Now, in an emergency, I just dig for the coins that fall in between my sofa cushions.

I used to have a job that paid me in cash. I would take the cash to the bank and get travelers checks. This way if I lost it I could have it replaced and it was not trackable by the IRS

... but I don't do that anymore, just in case they are listening!

I do keep some cash close at hand for emergencies.

Roald 07-25-2005 07:31 AM

few hundred here, no idea why actually lol

myjah 07-25-2005 07:34 AM

Yes, decided to start that after we had our baby.

Sosa 07-25-2005 07:34 AM

Not on hand I don't. Never know what the fuck will happen at the house. Money could be found/stolen, or house could burn up or something like that. Just have access to the money is the main thing.

DutchTeenCash 07-25-2005 07:34 AM

a 200 yo silver bowl I dump my coins in (not kiddin)

Pete-KT 07-25-2005 07:42 AM

C'mon - GFY Rule #41563 - We must NOT bring logic into the conversation. :thumbsup

Sharky 07-25-2005 07:56 AM

My wife does. I don't know how much exactly, my guess is several grand. She loves to horde extra cash now and then. She has surprized me on multiple occasions with a weekend getaway or an unexpected gift.

Can't beat that:-)

azguy 07-25-2005 08:04 AM

I keep both Euros and USD, and I also have some gold (www.goldmoney.com) - JUST IN CASE ;)

vink 07-25-2005 09:05 AM

Make sure and keep ones and fives. That's what they tell us in case of earthquake out here in CA.

juicyjuice 07-25-2005 09:14 AM

i keep a float of a few thousand hidden at home, and aout 20k in a safety deposit box.

BuggyG 07-25-2005 09:15 AM

hehehe got a small safe stashed in the garage under all my tools and equipment
kinda like
if you want it.. and take the prob to reach it
then yeah.. go for it

like least 30mins to take all the shit out of the way and then the combo to it

Steve 07-25-2005 09:21 AM

Ever see that show "It Takes A Thief"? That one fucker ransacks people's homes, tears them up real bad and is out of there in like 5-15 minutes. I seriously doubt there is any safe hiding place for money, if you dont have a nice safe bolted down into beams.

Peaches 07-25-2005 09:26 AM

Someone's going to take my TVs, computers, etc. long before they start spending hours digging through all my crap to find cash. Plus I have two pug watchdogs - the house is SO protected :)

pawsregd 07-25-2005 09:30 AM

I used to keep emegency cash around until my girlfriend said there was an emergency sale at the mall she had to spend it on :winkwink:

no, that's the thing - this skinny fucker completly ransacks the homnes in under 5 minutes - flips over beds, furniture, dumps out all the damn cupboards/cookie jars, etc. It's amazing that he works so fast, and I found it very disturbing. After seeing a few episodes of that show, I basically lost my desire to keep cash in the house.

I used to keep cash in one of my drawers, then it was a stupid little fire safty box - now I just keep it in the bank. If this house had an attic or basement, I might be able to find a decent spot. If you guys do keep cash on hand, you really ought to invest in a very secure, professionally installed safe.

I keep a few hundred dollars at home. That's just because I hate having to make a trip out to an ATM so I just get weeks worth of cash at a time.

If someone steals it, they steal it. It's not my life savings, just an emergency stash :) I'd be a LOT more upset about someone stealing my computer :(

I would never keep $4k hidden in the house, or buried for that matter.

Safe deposit boxes are only accessible during banking hours. Considering I first started this fund when I realized I might need it for bail money, having it in a safe deposit box doesn't do me any more good than having it in the bank itself :winkwink:

And the whole reason for having it now is IF there's a problem where I can't get access to cash from the bank - again, if I can't get access to the bank, I can't get access to a safe deposit box either. The money I keep in the bank is in an interest bearing account, not a safe deposit box :)

SmokeyTheBear 07-25-2005 10:54 AM

No but i got some emergency weed hidden.

A good man once said...

"Weed will get you through times of no money better than money will get you through times of no weed."

My emergency $$$ is hidden in an ING savings account earning 3.15%

OzMan 07-25-2005 11:18 AM

Better to keep an emergency supply of food and water in your house, but that's another story :)

You can do better: http://www.emigrantdirect.com is paying 3.5%! (that's where my REAL hardcore emergency money is).

I also keep water and food in the basement. I am ready for the revolution :thumbsup

How long does http://www.emigrantdirect.com/ hold your money for before you get a %? I think ING is around 10 days.

They get your money, send you a letter and then you verify the info online. From what I can tell, your interest starts as soon as you verify, possibly as soon as they get the money though. I think ING does the same, you just can't make withdrawals for 10 days? Capital One is usually .10% higher than ING too but they haven't raised their rates after ING raised theirs.

Sly 07-25-2005 12:04 PM

I used to keep about 3-4 months living expenses on hand, now I just keep a couple hundred available. I really don't foresee any situation where I would need mass amounts of cash.

For all of you mentioning fire boxes... you do realize that most of them would never withstand the heat and length of a real house fire, right?

Peaches 07-25-2005 12:12 PM

Just like burglers - if my house catches on fire, losing $4K in cash is going to be the very least of my worries. :(

Then you risk losing it.

Well.. you could always stash it in a locker at the bus depot or train station. Still some risk, but not as much as keeping it in your house or burying it I'd say.

WiredGuy 07-25-2005 12:17 PM

My mom does, she keeps it in the house in the form of $100 bills and savings bonds under my name. I only keep about $400 in my own private stash.

Rich 07-25-2005 12:18 PM

Yes, I keep it in a wall safe in my office along with important documents, my passport, etc.
