Simple solution: never "store" more than you're willing to lose. |

Of course. I have 2k usd and $10 cdn. ;)

I keep $5k hidden. I consider it more of a "secret stash" from my wife, but I guess it could be used in emergencies.
|
I've got an emergency roll of tokens for the arcade hidden in my top dresser drawer.
|
I keep a vault in my house where I keep some amount of money and other important things.

Peaches, out of old habits or being lazy cash is around in a vase. My husband laughs about it.
Last week, it saved his ass. I didn?t pay a parking ticket and there was a knock on the door. They were going to take him to jail for a parking ticket (5.00 plus fines =106.00) that I didn?t pay. He called me on my cell wondering where the checkbooks were kept and I told him exact same place for years but it if you can?t find them, raid my vase. He told me that we saved 45.00 paying in cash and then got on me for not paying the parking ticket? :upsidedow |
I stuff my mattress with cash.

Well...."freezer cash" was not intended to overcome banking emergencies...it was more about not depositing it in the bank. We are not talking about a small stash here....from what I remember there was enough money in that freezer to buy most small islands!!! :) --T |
Do Sparkletts bottles filled with coins and paper count?

This good friend of mine recently started going through a divorce. His soon to be former wife launched the divorce on him and he was clueless it was happening until it was too late. He kept 175-200k USD(!) in his safe at home and his wife made off with that. She cleaned out the checking acct (another 35k) and the savings acct (10k). She even took cash advances on all the credit cards to the max. All the direct debit charges from the mortgage to his FPL electric bill bounced due to NSF.
Another friend of mine had 12k taken from his house by his drug addict son in law during a visit. If you plan on keeping cash as security, keep it secret and keep it safe from your family. Your more likely to have it taken by a family member then by a burglar. |
My family members have a LOT more money than me - I'm not worried. Hell, most of them know where it is in case something happens to me. :)

hmmmm
now i am wondering whose house will be robbed? :winkwink: |

Follow along dude. Not everyone has a safe in their house. If you're curious as to what I do, I have a fireproof box for my legal documents, and I keep it unlocked so that any potential crook will look in and see there is no cash, and they'll hopefully be disinclined to make off with it. I don't keep a "stash" of cash. My ATM card works 24/7, so does my Visa, that's always been good enough for me. |
I keep a little cash around, because you never know when it will come in handy or save your butt.
The folks who worry about losing it (to theft, fire, etc.) blow my mind. If you lose it, earn some more! We're balancing risks, here. Whatever risks you're protecting against by having cash around (the need to keep yourself or somebody else out of jail, the need to buy groceries during a banking emergency, the fear of running out of recreational chemicals at 3:00 AM, the sudden need to bribe a border guard and get the hell out of Dodge City, whatever), you just just balance those against the risk of losing the money. Figure out how much the risks will hurt if you don't have cash, figure out how much it would hurt to have the money stolen, factor in how likely you think those things are, and just keep your cash-on-hand to a sum that makes sense. If we're only talking a few days or weeks income for you, who gives a shit? There's more money where that came from, but the anal virginity your sister's dumbshit boy lost in the county lockup over the long weekend because you couldn't round up eleven hundred bucks at 3:00 AM, that's harder to get back. Just don't do what I do -- don't keep it in what your girlfriend learns to call "the ATM wallet." :winkwink: |

We have no hidden money but have savings accounts with no ATM or credit card attached to the account. Bank manager knows who we are and takes great care of us anytime we need cash out. :)
