You do realize that their nuclear capabilities pales in comparison to the US arsenal right? The few nuclear subs that they have can't even travel too far because they break down so often.

I've spent a year in China during my college years as a poly sci major doing research on chinese nuclear weapons capabilities. Believe what you want, china has nukes but is hardly a viable contender if they came to blows with the US.

All they need is a few to hit certain cities and it's a big problem.

Some of you should really stop paying so much attention to American war movies and start paying more attention to American wars. America creates the country of Panama, builds the canal, and then less than 100 years later looses control of it to communists. China has no ability whatsoever to get a force across to Taiwan and then maintain it there even if the USA did not intervene. The Party would never risk it's control of the country with a war with the USA. Any economic reversal or loss of face through military defeat would mean the end of Party rule. The Party knows this and would never take this risk. Their strategy for Taiwan is looong term and very patient.

The USA is well aware of the situation and knows it doesn't have to fight China, but rather only the Party. The Americans could win this without a single bomb by using only economic pressure. As soon as they can't afford to keep the lights on in Shanghai the public will go ape.

It's a long way to Taiwan. You would need both naval and air supremacy to get there and then supply your forces. This sort of ability is decades away at best.

In desert storm most of the Iraqi equipment was actually purchased from China, and it is well known that the Chinese brass were truly shaken at how badly it performed. Saying there is a military buildup is not really correct...China has no offensive military capability and is just now working on establishing a defensive capability.

I don't know where you get your information, but it's dead wrong. The pentagon itself said recently that they're worried about China's military buildup, even going as far as to say that they may be close to being equivalent to the US military. It's all been done in secret, they've been underreporting their buildup for years. There's no question that they have the capability to take Taiwan if America stays out of it.

Even if the Chinese army was armed with pointy sticks and slingshots it would still be rather potent given its sheer size.

One thing that can be said about the Chinese, they don't make idle threats. Perhaps it'll be part of a strategy in hopes that there will be no conflict from it, but it's no bluff... they won't say they will do something unless they are fully capable and willing to do it.
