I taught English in China for almost two years, but that was a long time ago. China's military buildup is not American fear mongering, maybe 20 years ago they were what you described, but you clearly haven't been paying attention to their military budget. They are developing a high tech military, including an air force and navy. If they're not ready to take Taiwan yet, which almost everyone who studies foreign affairs agrees they are, they will be within the next two years. This is well known. You're talking like it's 1985 and they're still driving around on bikes. China has developed faster than any nation in the history of mankind. |

The PLA is a political force that is meant to support the Party. 99% of what they do is keep people from spitting gum at Tian an Men or keep the peasants in line. Currently there is a huge problem with the division of rich and poor in China and some areas are not really in government control any longer. Except for a few specialist units the PLA is a police force.
Outside of the showcase cities China is a 3rd world country. Here are some recent pics that are very good examples of what you see in central China: http://www.pbase.com/orchard/china To sum it up China is not yet capable of projecting military power and there is no credible threat to Taiwan now. In time yes, but not for many years. And I don't think they will go this route...Taiwan is a Chinese ethnic nation and in time the borders will blur. The people at the top know winning Taiwan is not a military struggle. |

Hmm...yep they have developed faster than any nation in the history of mankind. They have only been around for approximately 4,000 years and well gosh they are almost not a third world country now. Hmm...and the US has been a country for how long is it now...200 and how many years. Of course with those three degrees you possess (one being a masters in history) you be knowing things about history...eh Richy boy? |

The Russian military machine could not defeat 10,000 rebels in Chenya after 2 years of fighting with tanks, MIG's and artillery against AK-47's and RPG's. I seriously doubt China has any real significant nuclear capability and reliable technology. |
If China made a move on Taiwan, I doubt America would use military force against China. America can't afford the consequences.
I think there would be a lot of talk and political rhetoric, maybe America would give Taiwan some weapons to help it fight off China, but I don't see America getting militarily involved, the consequences are just too great. I think whether America would ultimately "win" in the end is irrelevant. I don't think the average American is willing to suffer the consequences of such a war just to ensure Taiwan's independence. |
By the way...

Oh please. This is just drivel to impress the citizens of their nation.
If they launch on us first, their country is DONE and they know that. |
I hope the US get nuked
America, todays empire, tomorrows ashes |
the US is begging for war, u think its weird that a country finally stands up to them with some serious shit?

Yes, sometimes it does feel like we are feeding a monster. |
that guy is just speaking out of his ass, if China really is planning an attack, the last thing they would do is to inform the whole world, it will only be known when the first explosion is hit
but both of these big powers know well enough to stay away from each other... i think war would be the last thing on both sides mind |

You didn't read it very well, they're not saying they're just going to attack the US. They're saying that if the US attacks them when they invade Taiwan, they'll have no option but to use nukes. |

Tick tack, or as someone pointed out to me on another board, tick tock.
America is getting fatter and poorer. Time is not on your side. Knowledge is imported, as are goods. You have to stop niggafying your country with useless sheepherders and wannabe crackdealers and use your current edge on american born children and their education. Tick tock, tick tock. |
heres a good example of why there would be no war.
North korea- Has nuke bombs, Freakish small country with 5 *FIVE* nukes, Does the united states even try to threaten North korea? Not even a peep, US tells china to do the talks, US has TOO much to lose and NK has nothing to lose. A bomb exploding in california would decimate the US economy and send US straight into deep depression. And you think US would think about waring with china? I think not. |

Noone gives a fuck about Israel except the US (domestic issues..). Israel would have been an Arab amusement park a long time ago had it not been for the US threat of reprisal. |
If China attacked Taiwan its not a forgone conclusion that they would win. Even without U.S. help, its possible Taiwan would emerge victorious IF they had the will to fight, which is somewhat doubtful. But history has shown over and over again that the side with better technology wins, and the Chinese military, like most conscript armys, is barely a notch above Sadam's legions.

global politics is about national interests... not universal fairness. thats just the way of the game. why should the US care about feeding and taming N Korea when there is nothing in it for the US? why doesn't Sweden feed them and try to broker a new arms deal for them to break again? ;) |

they gave us cheap imports but now that we buy from China and don't really need them. Sure we would talk loud but that is all...... |

Damn Rich, your pretty informed about China......... China will have 1 Trillion by next summer :helpme China's forex reserves increase to US$711bn China's foreign exchange reserves increased by just over US$100bn in the first six months of this year to US$711bn, nearly double the rate at which its store of overseas currency rose in the same period last year. China's foreign reserves are on track to break US$1,000bn by June next year if they continue to expand at the current rate, according to Stephen Green, an economist with Standard Chartered in Shanghai. The build-up in reserves increases the pressure on the People's Bank of China, the central bank, and its efforts to control monetary supply and inflation, and will fuel an already intense debate about whether Beijing should revalue its currency, the renminbi, now pegged to the US dollar. The rapid build-up of foreign reserves in recent months has been driven primarily by a swelling trade surplus and strong foreign investment. Speculative capital inflows, much of it banking on a revaluation of the Chinese currency, are also contributing to the build-up, but not to the extent that they were late last year. "Hot-money inflows appear to be easing," said Ben Simpfendorfer, an economist with JP Morgan. http://www.chinadaily.com.cn/english...ent_460381.htm[/QUOTE] |

Taiwan is not that far from China at all. "Taiwan is situated in the Pacific Ocean about 160 kilometers (100 miles) off the southeastern coast of the Chinese mainland. Located about midway between Korea and Japan to the north and Hong Kong and the Philippines to the south, Taiwan is a natural gateway for travelers to Asia." China could easily attack Taiwan but not take on the US, they are not stupid and they will only attack if they are 100% sure. Pretty sure they will use economic power to gain Taiwan instead of military power..... http://img180.imageshack.us/img180/9...19031308ne.jpg http://img180.imageshack.us/img180/8...21565601ny.jpg http://www.war-sky.com/forum/attachm...30/3_72611.jpg http://www.war-sky.com/forum/attachm...30/3_72614.jpg http://img82.imageshack.us/img82/759...21431000jo.jpg http://img296.imageshack.us/img296/3...17045901vw.jpg |
