The Pros and Cons of working from Home

Hello all .

I'm a newbie to GFY ... Eventhough I've been around in the online adult biz since 96 ... ouch ... I'm afraid I've been a social wall flower when it comes to boards. I'm working on changing that ... So Hello ... hello!

I run a membership site called AllRedheads.com which is a small (But very well converting) niche featuring only natural redheads. Been in business with AR since 1999 and am currently revamping my webmaster program but that's not why I'm writing. I don't know how many single operator enterprises there are out there - I'm sure tons but I know so many of the "mom and pop" type membership sites are geting eaten up by the big programs. I shall not be eaten I say ... well at least not in that way.

I have been working from home for over 8 years now ... and know all the challenges that it poses of needing to really discipline yourself. I always thought I was pretty good at it. Recently a friend had an office space that she sublet to me for 2 months while she traveled. So for the first time I moved my office out of my house and was AMAZED at how much my productivity level went up. Totally was worth the money for me.

I'm curious what everyone's experience is with working from home vs. outside office space. And if you have been really good at working from home how you do that.

I'm in LA and am serious about wanting to find 2 or 3 other adult webmasters close by who would want to go in on a Co-op of sorts. Sharing space, resources, experiences etc. Just other cool people to be around while you work who are doing similar things. If anyone out there has an interest please email me [email protected]

Much thanks ... I'm in the 2257th level of Dante's hell sorting out all my paperwork ... hope the many talented attorneys working on our behalf (thanks Joe!) will get it thrown out.

welcome to gfy :)

personally, i find more progress in working outside home. in that way you can easily set aside home chores & babysitting to business.
advantage: you can mix business with plessure :1orglaugh

ninarouge 06-16-2005 12:42 PM

You could work in your underwear in my co-op office ... but I'm not sure about farting...

con- you work until all hours of the morning.
pro - you get your best work done at all hours of the morning

polish_aristocrat 06-16-2005 01:20 PM

cons = you need self motivation and you don't work with people

pros = you can work nude or in your under wear you can wake up at any time, dress however you like, and most people will be jealous of you ;)

Keev 06-16-2005 01:24 PM

i believe I met you a long ass time ago at one of the old AWE Webmaster events , does this sound about right?

Midwest Shane 06-16-2005 01:31 PM

I quit my job 8 months ago and have been working from home ever since. I guess the hardest part for me is I am always at work. I will have friends come over yet I find myself needing to check something on the computer. I will also be working and look up at the clock and see 10 hours went by. I went from working with Annuities putting in 38 hours a week to spending close to 80 hours on the computer a week.

The plus is I can work nude lol!

Seems like more con's then pro's but oh well who ever said making money was easy and I just built a big new house so it is paying off in the long run.

I've been to a few of them so possibily ... but you know how they all sort of start to blurr together

chase 06-16-2005 01:41 PM

There is less division between work and family life..and social life is hard too, because I find it hard to relax in the living room when I have 50 things I COULD be doing that will make me some money sitting in the next room.

I feel the opposite. Working a 9-5 kills your social life more.

I think this is true in a way since you can always make time to see friends and family. However, if you don't already have a lot of friends or family its harder to meet new people.

Matt 26z 06-16-2005 08:28 PM

The biggest pro is of course that you choose your own hours and don't have some asshole telling you want to do.

KRL 06-16-2005 08:35 PM

I've done both. I really hate office life. I just tried the office thing again with Men.com and after a year I couldn't take it and came back to my home office.

I found my time being wasted being in an office once again, because everyone wants to talk to you, comes in your office, the let's all go to lunch everyday stuff, stay late, was missing a lot of time with my son, dealing with office politics, etc. Even though it was just an 8 minute drive, I hated having to get all dressed up and going back and forth. I like working totally casual and you can only do that at home.

Its so peaceful working from home. I absolutely love it. So now we're using one of my partners offices when we need to do Men.com meetings, they've got an entire top floor in a big high rise, so it works out perfectly for me and all the people that work for us are in their own offices.

home

I have been working from home for over 5 years and boy... looking back, its a long journey... I am so used to working from home, working at a job/office is so foreign to me. I was actually thinking about applying at bestbuy just to work there for a week and say "yep, this shit sucks, going back to my home office now" just to get my bearings back to normal.

Anyways, I have noticed that my social life isn't that good, but mostly because I moved to a city that I didn't know anyone (orlando, fl) and mostly messed around with girls from dating sites, met some people from other places, and also because I will usually like to be in front of my computer for long hours... I really think I have blurred the line between life and work... thats probably why so many people here are on gfy so much. ;-)

anyways I got a girlfriend now for the last 1.5 years and I find myself not really caring about much now, just making money and buying a big house... not sure whats next though, now that I am attached :helpme

anyone shoot any content in orlando area? :helpme

I'm in LA and I relate to what you're saying. I'm seriously considering getting a spot at one of the Barrister Suites locations in LA in the future because I want to start producing content and don't want to put my home address down for 2257.

You might want to check into Barrister Suites before getting an office with other webmasters. The url is http://www.barrister-suites.com

Pro - Most online problems seem to happen either last thing at night or first thing in the morning so its easier to deal with from home.

Pro - Have an office away from home too so that you can get up in the morning and decide where you want to work that particular day.

I have an office in town and a home office and each week I have a new routine. Some days I am more productive at home and other days more so in the office.

When you have employees some days at the office are spent answering questions or putting out fires. THose days are not productive, but neither are the days when household shit needs to be done or the phone rings or someone comes to the door.

I have gone back and forth on this issue and it comes down to whereever you get the most quiet that day is where you will be most productive. I am even going to try working on the lawn this year with my WIFI laptop.
