wtf?? I own a domain I've never seen, at a registrar I've never been to!

how the hell did that happen??

I got a snail mail spam from a competing registrar saying "it's going to expire in 6 months, move the domain to us!"

I didn't even know I own it! But sure enough, there's my info in the whois info and everything.

Identity theft gone awry.

I have 100's of domains I never even heard of, much less visited.

yeah but that's a case of losing track... I only have like, 8 to my name. So I know specifically what domains I do and don't have.

Alcohol does some crazy things!

Furious_Male 04-28-2005 12:14 PM

Or someone was doing something illegal with the domain and switched it into your name.

Are you sure? If you register domain(s) that you don't even know... :2 cents: hehehe just kidding :upsidedow

It's common over in the UK that companies mass register domain names of local businesses, then phoning them and saying they have their domain name, then they renew or buy it

Anything like that?

not great, but actually not bad. I wouldn't mind getting control of it.

I'd believe it except that I got spam from a competitor of the place the domain is registered. And... if they did that, would they really pick a porn domain?

I thought you said it had all your info. If so I guess you do have control of it. :1orglaugh

All it would take is a fax to the registrar and then changing the registrar to yours ... LMFAO :1orglaugh

JFPdude 04-28-2005 12:30 PM

It would be a lesson to the real owner about false information in his whois.

cool1 04-28-2005 12:31 PM

Well I hope it all works out in your favour

Hmm, autobot usually, I've had spam from a company trying to buy my personal domain name because their business trades under that name

evildick 04-28-2005 12:36 PM

I used to get those fake renewal notices from a registrar here in Canada that I had never used before, but they were for domains that I actually owned.

They were trying to get me to transfer to them at an outrageous price, but tried to make it look like I had initially registered it through them.

This is probably a similar scam, but apparently they are getting desperate enough to use domains you don't even own yet.
