Wire-transfer services like Western Union require customers to call from their home phone when they want to transfer money in an effort to deter fraud -- a barrier easily sidestepped by any identity thief using a caller-ID spoofing service. Fraud rings can now transfer money directly out of stolen credit-card accounts, rather than buying merchandise and reselling it, he said.

Western Union spokeswoman Danielle Periera said the company has no other way to verify that transfer requests are valid. "We try hard to stay one step ahead of them and recognize that scam artists are sophisticated and often change their schemes," she said.

Yes lots , i first posted a few weeks ago and i have over 70 clients signed up and am using the premium services. everything works good.

SmokeyTheBear 03-20-2005 10:42 PM

i started getting referral cash within hours of signing up , and also was spending the cash using their own service within hours , so im assuming its fairly instant..

That's exactly what they did the other day when my VOIP phone number didn't show up on their caller ID.

The first time the woman wouldn't believe me, the second time I convinced her to call me to prove I was at that number

"What number are you calling from now?"

I tell her my number

"No you're not"

er, yes I am. It's a VOIP phone and the caller ID info doesn't always get passed...

"What's a VOIP phone?...."

:disgust

It also works great for ordering pizza's to people you dont like or want to annoy , bu ising their number as spoofed number :)

reynold 03-21-2005 05:02 AM

Oh man, that's fucked up.

rowan 03-21-2005 01:34 PM

Surely the carriers that they're connecting to are going to clamp down on this? I presume there's something similar to BGP in the phone network to allow routing of calls, so sooner or later someone is going to make a software patch that quietly nulls caller ID numbers that are not routed to (or owned by) that particular carrier

infecto 03-21-2005 01:42 PM

caller id spoofing has been around for a bit and there is a way you can get around it without even paying for the service ;)
