Cogent bandwidth is MUCH cheaper and somewhat worse than bandwidth from other providers like UUnet or Level 3.

How is Cogent bandwidth worse? They buy transit from AboveNet, and supposedly peer with a large amount of Tier 2/3 ISPs. It's basically like buying AboveNet transit, which I don't see much of a problem with.

I can hook you up nice on exodus bandwidth. http://bbs.gofuckyourself.net/board/smile.gif

Coke 11-18-2001 05:17 AM

There is absolutely nothing wrong with Cogent bandwidth. We've had not a single customer move from us because of slowness or anything of that sort.

Btw Whoreans, people who sit in glass houses shouldn't throw stones. Exodus isn't that much better considering that they're in chapter 11 and their stocks will be worthless regardless of the outcome of the chapter 11 http://bbs.gofuckyourself.net/board/smile.gif I hope you've already shopped around for a new backbone provider. I can hook you up with a Cogent rep, if you want http://bbs.gofuckyourself.net/board/biggrin.gif

You say it yourself; if they buy transit from AboveNet, how on earth can they be THAT HUGE AMOUNT cheaper than AboveNet then?!?! you should see that something is too good to be true here http://bbs.gofuckyourself.net/board/wink.gif

tha_timinator 11-18-2001 07:26 AM

and even IF it's true, then they are making huge losses on those sales, which means financially it's not a healthy company, which means it's very stupid to rely on it... just my .02

Cogent:
Doesn't have a Global Network.
No peering arrangments worth talking about cept almost bankrupt Above.net

Compare to Verio's backbone:
Global Network
Private peering arrangments with @home, ATT, Sprint, MCI and every major Tier 1 Backbone.
IP only Network.
Verio hosts probably 20% of the nets most trafficed adult sites.

Try running Pingplotter against any site hosted on Cogent during peak times..200-400MS.. really slow http://bbs.gofuckyourself.net/board/frown.gif

You can drive the Ferrari or ride the bus.. it's your choice.

Buy enough fiber and MFN will possibly cut you a deal on bandwidth, (see: http://www.cogentco.com/News/news_030100_2.html), and colocation (see: http://www.cogentco.com/News/news_111300.htm)...light about 160 million square feet of commercial office (http://www.cogentco.com/News/news_052201.htm) at some decent-to-ridiculous square foot rate, merge with another company (Allied Riser) who has been providing fiber to commercial office space (approximately 150-200 million square feet) for years (http://www.cogentco.com/News/news_082901.htm), and grab the customers, peering relationships, and other assets of a tier 1 ISP filing for bankruptcy (http://www.cogentco.com/News/news_091001.htm), and not turn a profit?

Cogent is not the best network, that has already been established but verio is not nearly the best network and do have their share of financial problems.

You should be able to get less than 20 ms ping to properly setup server on the cogent network from a verio server, you should try it.

Please show me which network connected to Cogent has a 400ms ping from your box. You're welcome to try ours : 321host-it.com

I'll make the first step:

traceroute to thumbserver.com (128.241.79.23), 30 hops max, 38 byte packets
1 66.28.45.1 0.590 ms 0.383 ms 0.400 ms
2 66.28.5.181 0.416 ms 0.308 ms 0.306 ms
3 66.28.4.129 24.176 ms 24.078 ms 24.116 ms
4 66.28.4.30 34.859 ms 34.733 ms 34.734 ms
5 66.28.4.34 46.397 ms 46.259 ms 46.268 ms
6 206.220.243.34 46.641 ms 46.761 ms 46.679 ms
7 129.250.3.134 46.766 ms 46.789 ms 46.844 ms
8 129.250.5.100 46.997 ms 47.018 ms 46.856 ms
9 129.250.2.6 60.034 ms 59.898 ms 59.870 ms
10 129.250.31.135 61.689 ms 61.853 ms 61.853 ms
11 204.203.3.18 73.693 ms 61.507 ms 62.538 ms
12 128.241.79.23 63.113 ms 63.979 ms 63.708 ms

Unfortunately you're on the east coast so we can't have a 20ms ping but well I guess it's okay anyway. Do you disagree?
Btw, this is peaktime.

Thanks,
Gernot

Ah I thought it was Bellevue, VA not WA. Still not that bad. Traffic goes through Chicago that's why it takes longer. That seems to be caused by Verio though as a lot of Californian traffic seems to go first to Chicago before entering Verio's network.

Coke 11-18-2001 04:10 PM

Just another example of a network in WA that is hosted by Verio:

traceroute to sextracker.com (207.246.136.167), 30 hops max, 38 byte packets
1 66.28.45.1 (66.28.45.1) 1.195 ms 0.396 ms 0.564 ms
2 g0-2.core01.sfo01.atlas.cogentco.com (66.28.5.177) 0.387 ms 0.307 ms 0.462 ms
3 f0.pao1.verio.net (198.32.176.14) 1.362 ms 1.337 ms 1.405 ms
4 p4-6-0-0.r03.sttlwa01.us.bb.verio.net (129.250.3.90) 21.718 ms 21.799 ms 21.689 ms
5 ge-1-0-0.a07.sttlwa01.us.ra.verio.net (129.250.28.3) 20.180 ms 20.236 ms 20.264 ms
6 ge-6-3-0.a07.sttlwa01.us.ce.verio.net (204.203.3.37) 19.657 ms 19.546 ms 20.012 ms
7 v5-1000M.core0.sea.accretive-networks.net (207.246.155.129) 20.154 ms 20.620 ms 21.081 ms
8 sextracker.com (207.246.136.167) 19.672 ms 20.203 ms 19.724 ms

Here the traffic goes through PAIX which is of course much faster.

Wow look at that direct connections with mae East, Mae West, Sprint, Paix. Now who was saying that they have no points other that Above ??? I'm not going to blow smoke up your ass, we ourselves have put in place a failover network in case the cogent pipe takes a dump, but since putting it in place we've had nothing but great pings times, and fast bandwidth since the end of July. So just because your jealous that you can't get cogent pipe where your locked into your multi-year contracts doesn't mean that you should badmouth it. Now let's take a look at your connection www.thumbserver.com

Looks about the same to me, taking into consideration the fact that your on the west coast, and our boxes are in the midwest. So please don't badmouth someone with no proof, it just makes you look like an ass http://bbs.gofuckyourself.net/board/smile.gif

So just because your jealous that you can't get cogent pipe where your locked into your multi-year contracts doesn't mean that you should badmouth it
Actually Cogent is very much available here and we did consider it before going gigabit with Verio. When Verio gave us their bandwidth at Cogent's price how could we pass it up?

Actually the other day Cogent had 20% packet loss. I continue to monitor their network and get proof if you need to see it. When I saw that I was amazed that people would even consider their network.

$3,000 for 100/Mbps is pretty attractive I have to admit. I hope they can continue to deliver a quality network.. time will tell.
