Accessing and modifying server files with FTP

I am not good with telnet and had my server directories set up so I can access them with cuteftp. (ex. usr/local)

However, when I am unable to modify or create files. Only download them. Is there a place is WHM or a command in telnet that I can use to change the permissions so I can upload and rewrite over files in this directory? I am trying to change the templates for xpanel if that helps at all.

Hope someone can help in newbie terms :(

Try this - PuTTY: A Free Telnet/SSH Client

I have putty but I don't know how to uses it to upload / replace files from my harddrive to the server

swedguy 01-29-2005 11:42 PM

If you can't upload and overwrite files, your host has set the wrong permission on the files or directories. Contact your host.

mkx 01-29-2005 11:44 PM

The host doesn't know what it is. I am logged in with root. Is there anything I can configure in telnet or whm to fix this?

swedguy 01-29-2005 11:47 PM

If the host doesn't know what it is, then you have seriously picked the wrong host.

would changing the folder permissions in telnet work? It's something I really want to take care of tonight, is there anything the host can do that i can't?

Do you have read and write access to your www directories? They may just have set your control panel folders as read only.

Have a look in cuteftp for the 'chmod' command and check the file permissions in your home directory. You'll need to know how to do that eventually.

Juicy D. Links 01-29-2005 11:52 PM

chown might do the trick via SSH

mkx 01-29-2005 11:57 PM

ok i will give ssh a try, I think i might be able to change the permissions. Otherwise, does anyone know ho to upload a file from my computer to the server via putty?

You should be able to get what you need from the OS's help files:

type: 'man <command you need help with>' and you'll get info on the useage / syntax / etc :)

mkx 01-30-2005 12:11 AM

Yah it's dedicated. Don't know telnet really. I guess I will have to wait until the host can look into it unless someone can tell me exactly what to do

mkx 01-30-2005 12:13 AM
