Bandwidth prices have really gone nuts lately...

Someone from servermatrix---please contact me

bringer 08-15-2004 03:08 AM

i have a box with servermatrix, but its not a unmetered cogent box
ive peaked at 9.9mbps for 28 hours straight with 1 drop off to 8.4mbps for about 20min
great speed and support and a nice admin system aside from whatever you install on your server.

If your maxing your port at 9.9mbps with a 10mbps cap, your going to get allot of packet loss. Your on 10 mbps cap or 100 mbps cap?

10. i thought that aswell but random checks threwout the day showed otherwise. its $10/month to upgrade to 100 which i havent yet found a reason to do so but the option is there all the same.

http 08-15-2004 03:21 AM

If it suits you need go for it. Servermatrix is big enough to be able to afford many 20 mbps customers maxing out their lines, and won't need to get nasty because their overselling biz didn't work out. When someone oversells I look at the size of the company and the # of customers they have. The more, the better even extreme overselling works (I would not even call this one extreme overselling)

AFAIK the 20 mbps are NOT on their usual network but get 100% cogent. I have nothing against cogent, they can be very good - if servermatrix doesn't oversubsribe their cogent line

It is a 20 mbps cap so it is not suited for sites with heavy ups and downs in traffic but you already knew that

VeriSexy 08-15-2004 03:30 AM

Yes, they are a big company and that is why I am interested. So far nobody has tried their 20 mbps servers :(

mcmc 08-15-2004 04:20 AM

never had any problems with servermatrix. They are very good :thumbsup

cayne 08-15-2004 04:34 AM

20mbps = 6TB/month. for 250$
I checked a shitload other hoster and the best deal I found was: 1.2TB/250$/month.

So I can't believe that there isn't something wrong.

Gasper 08-15-2004 05:31 AM

* MatriXtreme Servers operate independently of The Planet/ServerMatrix network.
* MatriXtreme Servers utilize Cogent? bandwidth.

If servermatrix can't pull this off, noone can. Servermatrix is HUGE and has the name to back it up. I have alot of boxes at servermatrix and they give what they advertise. That 20mbit deal is ideal for mpeg submitters.

Try them. You will be blown away. Downtime is almost zero (never recorded downtime in 1,5 years) and support is FAST (but you'll have to sort out your own stuff like scripting and dns and stuff)

Odin 08-15-2004 05:46 AM

What's their spam policy like? Not email spam, but shit like say friendster spam. Would they can an account if they got enough complaints from friendster users for example?

Wow, this could change some minds of non believers. How long have you had the 20mbit box? What's your max burst? Glad to find someone with experience instead of unbias opinions.

Hope to find a few more users with their opinions. :)

I have a few 10 mbit boxes. The 20mbit promo is still very new, don't need more BW at the moment. Do you know Choker? He uses servermatrix and loves it.. and so do alot of GFY'ers too :winkwink: They give you impressive stats (orbit.theplanet.com) and reboot/emergency features. Unmanaged might I ad, but if you can use cpanel/WHM you're off. They can set up everything you request, even a 3D video card in your box (no shit). Impressive backup facilities too...

Wow, if someone like Chocker trust and happy Server Matrix then it really says something about them. I guess I have to bump until I find someone with the 20mbps connection server. :)

Bansheelinks 08-15-2004 08:19 PM

I'm real curious about this............anymore satisfied Servermatrix customers at such levels?

FreeFastHost 08-15-2004 08:25 PM

I think Cogent sucks. I would personally never risk my business on that.

"What is the charge for going over the allotted bandwidth?
The cost for bandwidth overage is $0.50 per GB."

That's pricey, fun times if you have submitted tons of movie galleries, and then you get accepted to all the big 'uns at the same time....

If there are overage charges then it is not unmetered. Does anyone know what is the story with this?

Unmetered doesn't mean that you have unlimited BW. It means that you get 20mbps line. And if you use this line 100% for the whole month, you can use ~6TB!

It depends what plan you go on. If you select unmetered you will be capped and there will be no overage.

Yah I agree. That's what unmetered means everywhere else. unmetered with a bandwidth limit is ridiculous.

So did you buy it yet?

notjoe 08-16-2004 01:35 PM

I am going to be buying this as a backup solution...i'll let you guys know how it goes! :)

How can you you sell bandwith for $13 a meg

Volantt 08-16-2004 02:09 PM

I have a few points I would like to make first.

Servermatrix is a stand up company. They provide a good network with awesome reliability. They make money off of "additional" charges like special installs or custom requests. So if you need them to do something they will charge you $75/hr and want 1 to 3 hours to do it.

Cogent bandwidth is budget bandwidth. In the early days of the net all the "resellers" greatly oversold this to make serious coin. Couple this with routing hardware and protocols constantly being refined caused great strain on the Cogent infastructure. And resulted in down time and heavy packet loss. With new GigE connections and router protocol and hardware it has changed.

I personally don't use any Cogent network in my dealings but have noticed when servicing my clients who are on a Cogent network now.

THIS HAS CHANGED. It is almost like night and day on the Cogent network now. Still seeing some slow traceroutes but not to bad. Would not recommend it for game servers or streaming but for file serving I might consider it.

:2 cents:

Note: I currently use Voxel.net's http://www.voxrox.com and love it! Duel Opteron is amazing!!!!

Strife 08-16-2004 02:15 PM

now that's a damn good deal

Servermatrix is a very large company, they don't just host adult which means 80% of the people that rent servers from them use less then half the bandwidth. If you become very good as overselling then they become profitable. :)

Early days? I didn't know about Cogent until 2-3 years ago. Anyway, everyone said they wouldn't last and they are still here. They have improved allot............. That is why big hosting companys are using them now. They are not even the cheapest anymore.

I used to do a lot of BW on cogent and it was the biggest mistake I ever made.

If you're not that serious about your biz, going on cogent wouldn't be a big deal. But if you make a decent amount of money at this, going on cogent would be a bad idea (I guess if you're making money you don't even need to think about going down this road).
