If you're not that serious about your biz, going on cogent wouldn't be a big deal. But if you make a decent amount of money at this, going on cogent would be a bad idea (I guess if you're making money you don't even need to think about going down this road).

Did you get a direct link from Cogent or through a bad reseller?

thebizbucket 08-17-2004 04:33 PM

well, i'm going to give it a shot, just got off the phone with their sales guy.. should have mine up within 24 hours

thing is, even if the 20Mbit can't sustain all day, or you get a bit of loss or something, this deal still whups a lot of the competitors with drive/RAM alone ... so the bandwidth seems like gravy on top.

:2 cents:

mind you - this probably doesn't mean shit because its my first post. but i'll post some files tomorrow night or the next day, and run some test from my other servers and let u guys know the results.

VeriSexy 08-19-2004 12:03 AM

Got your server setup yet? :)

Vitasoy 08-19-2004 01:59 AM

bump for veri, and looking forward to see the results thebizbucket! =)

thebizbucket 08-26-2004 03:06 PM

server was setup about 48 hours later .. and then was usable a day and a half later. apparently they deployed it on the wrong segment and had to move it over.

since then the inbound is SUPER fast, and outbound is in fact 20Mb/s every time i have tried from a fast link.. its def capable of that and a lot more (at first it wasnt capped and pushing a full 10 megabytes per sec, or 100Mb/s out) ..

so sounds like a couple hitches on account of it being a new product.

our monitoring hasnt seen it go down at all yet .. but we aren't sustaining anything (waiting on visa approval).

give me a week or 2 and we'll have some stupidly generous gallery pages up on there with like 30 high res pics to test it out.

check back :)

VeriSexy 08-29-2004 04:36 PM

Good to hear, how is the server so far? :)

marktruman 08-29-2004 04:40 PM

I'm setting one up in about a week...let ya know how it goes. I already have a couple boxes there and IMO as long as you can do admin stuff yourself, they're the only way to fly :2 cents:

Unmanaged might I ad, but if you can use cpanel/WHM you're off. They can set up everything you request, even a 3D video card in your box (no shit). Impressive backup facilities too...
unmanaged? so if you know shit about servers then this isn't the deal for you?

I'm on a standard server (mixed, not cogent) and I'm currently grabbing a huge file from an external server which is capped at 15Mbit/sec... the transfer is going at 10Mbit/sec which I guess is the limit at my end.

I would have also thought that things would grind to a halt with the link near 100% utilisation but I guess the capping is done in software rather than hardware limiting the port to a 10Mbit/sec speed.

ok i just ordered that incredible 20Mbps unmetered box..
waiting for them to set me up

i hope everything will be ok... though i will need to hire an admin since i dont have a f... clue about those things..

lets keep this thread bumped :thumbsup

thebizbucket 09-09-2004 08:58 PM

well, other than a power issue last night - seems ok. that was unfortunate to say the least.

still awaiting visa approval tho (bastards!!) so haven't been bothered to pump our first site yet, not without much chance of makin a sale.

still planning on updating once we get it going.

any idea who you're gonna use as an admin? i'm lookin around, thinking about getting a server in the next lil while

sixxxthsense 09-09-2004 09:54 PM

great post! enjoyed reading it, unlike 99% of the shit on GFY, anyway I think im gonna try getting a box see how it goes :)

rewn 09-09-2004 10:19 PM

cognet traffic

evil

!

my admin just got our latest box from www.ezzi.net , as a reseller he gets 15% off as well.

Multiple boxes is better (stability and price) than one with a lot of bandwidth, round robin dns with rysnc.

rewn 09-09-2004 10:24 PM

for exmaple: ezzi have a $215 10mbit but 10mbit = 3tb, its actually cheaper to buy 3 $65 servers and you get 6000tb which is 20mbit for $195.

rysync keeps all the servers contents the same ( mysql clusters if u need mysql )

too easy, and you'll NEVER have your site down

i'm surprised it took someone that long to figure that out.. lol.. fact is, those "$65 servers" (actually variable rate, depending on setup fee) are cheaper than the cogent 20mbps, AND share the same backbone as the rest of theplanet/server matrix...

add a little round robin DNS and voila... magic!

AFAIK the 20 mbps are NOT on their usual network but get 100% cogent. I have nothing against cogent, they can be very good - if servermatrix doesn't oversubsribe their cogent line

It is a 20 mbps cap so it is not suited for sites with heavy ups and downs in traffic but you already knew that

you're right, the 20mbp offer is on cogent and completely separate of their main lines..

i was with server matrix last year.. they had pretty sweet deals.. their prices have since gone up, but are still decent nonetheless.. i spoke with their sales manager a few times, and (as someone mentioned earlier) the majority of their customers are not adult related... translation, the average user uses 80GB.. (don't quote me on the exact number.. the chronic affects my memory) .. doing an actual $/gb comparison isn't fair, as their prices reflects the degree of oversell...

after a friend and i started buying up boxes (over 200 at one point) they started to raise their prices... :(

Volantt 09-10-2004 12:02 AM

Wish, servermatrix sold opterons... :2 cents:

zentz 09-10-2004 03:18 PM

lol, this is so f... funny

a little advice.. if you dont know shit about cpanel and server administration and you are not ready to hire a good full-time admin , than DO NOT buy this box. :2 cents:
