Military draft in 2k5?

Yes?
No?
Maybe?

From what I heard, there is both a republican and democrat version of the draft. That?s only what I heard, I haven?t had a chance of looking into it.

brizzad 07-11-2004 09:53 PM

the idea is up

but times have changed, a draft will not go well with the american people

NiTe-HaWk 07-11-2004 09:53 PM

Phew...that'd be so scary. They don't need to be pulling kids into war like that. I heard rumors that they could draft you even if you are full time in school. Rumors.

Thats my plan as well.

creegan 07-11-2004 09:58 PM

never

it's just propaganda from the left. first of all, our presence in the middle east is about to begin to phase out, back to normal, because of the huge UN support. second of all, there's a shitload of reservists, and active duty troops that could handle just about anything. why draft unskilled unwilling "soldiers" when you have people who are constantly training for combat situations?

edit: added a couple words that my fingers forgot the first time around

Yea ive been hearing the same. If thats true, then that is seriously fucked up. The only problem is that you really cant trust what you here these days since people will change it up or mix it with other things.

NiTe-HaWk 07-11-2004 10:05 PM

Check out the bills S 89 and HR 163. Search google and you will find a ton on it.

Hopefully if the Dems win we won't need a draft - because we won't be at war. What a great day that would be.

Oh well, war is peace. Freedom is slavery. Ignorance is strength.

UN has a "huge" army to send to Iraq? Let me know where you got that information from...

There most likely will be a draft in 2005, Republican or Democratic president, doesn't matter. Quite a few of the troops currently in Iraq have been there 6+ months longer than they were expected to and are worn out, the amount we have right now is not enough to secure the country.

I hope and don't think it will happen.

Rochard 07-11-2004 11:03 PM

You can run to Mexico or run to Canada. Fucking cowards.

Odd thing - while everyone is screaming that our military is over taxed.... I don't think it is. There are some 150,000 troops in Iraq, right? The US Marine Corps - The smallest branch of our armed forces - has 400,000 (last I heard anyhow).

Do you really mean to tell me that 1/4 of the Marines would cause a shortage in military manpower? And do you think that if our forces were weak it would public information?

I think they are crying wolf. Maybe the military wants more money or something.

about 100 bases were closed between 88 and mid 90s

Can't go to Canada. They will send you back.

It is not being a coward. It is not wanting to waste my time or my life on something I don't give a shit about.

Agreed. If iraq was invading the us, then i wouldnt have that big of a problem with a draft. But thats not the case.

Donald Rumsfeld recently talked of "a long hard slog": perhaps you should update him with your view of events in Iraq? And FYI the US has troops in various numbers in around 70% of all the countries in the world - http://www.lewrockwell.com/vance/vance8.html - a heavy routine commitment which doesn't allow too much room for large-scale military adventures. You also appear to have ignored the fact that the Defense Department has already found it necessary to summon the Individual Ready Reserve.

The only thing I can agree with is that much of the speculation about S89 and HR163 is just speculation. However it doesn't hurt to know that such bills are floating around because it at least tells those affected what some of their representatives are up to.

it's not about huge numbers. un forces will be slowly taking the place of the majority of us forces in iraq. by huge support, i was commenting on how even the countries who opposed our presence there will be sending soldiers. even though many of the troops in iraq have been there for longer than expected, it's not an issue of manpower, as much as it is the inability to rotate forces. to say that they are worn out just isn't accurate, morale is very high over there, but you'll never see that on the news.

it's not over, that's very true, but it IS coming to an end. as for it being a long, hard slog, you're referring to a memo from october of 2003. that was before some pretty huge breakthroughs... i'm not sure on the numbers of the irr but i am fairly sure that it was a minority called up, and their jobs are to replace active duty soldiers so they can go to iraq. most reservists end up in japan, qatar, or bases in the us on guard duty. for marines, there is actually a waiting list to get into iraq.

FYI...I for one favor the re-institution of the draft for multiple reasons...and was not in favor of doing away with the draft.

creegan 07-12-2004 06:24 AM

i served and believe in mandatory service.

i wasn't saying a bunch of marines go and vote people off the island. they are the smallest force because there is no need for them to be larger... but i'm pretty sure you're aware of that. most people don't know the difference between the marines and the army, though. seems they're always the loudest.

sacX 07-12-2004 06:33 AM

this is by far the best discussion of how the issue currently sits.

The United States has never been invaded, with the exception of Pearl Harbor. We've always brought the battlefield to them. In WWII went brought the battle to Germany, although they never attacked us. At a certain point you need to do what is right.

Obviously the "Greatest Generation" has long come and gone.

Supposed to be 26 or 28, but i've read they want to change it to 34, but then again, if i find the right site i could read that aliens abduct people to have sex and that japanese shit eating porn is actually a healthy way to recycle food.

montel 07-12-2004 07:46 AM

it would be fucked up to get drafted to go to a war that was started on false evidence and should never have happened. but by 2005 there will probably be another GWB incited war to die in anyhow.
