Why the hell do people still write checks at the store.
It always bugs the hell out of me when I am in line and the person in front of me starts writing out a check. Do they think its still 1975? Every bank in the world offers debit cards. Use them for gods sake.

:1orglaugh
I have never seen that in my days at Montreal |
I agree it does suck. it's usually an old lady or something they really never upgrade
|
dont you know the purpose of checks? People write checks cause they know they have a few days to get the money in the bank. How old are you?
|
I like checks for the purpose of the carbon copy. I hate debit cards. Would much rather use a credit card.
|
i hate that shit too, and it seems no matter where i go the person before me is writing a check.

That is a good point, it seems so pre historic when you see people doing it, but man it really wasn't all that long ago that it was pretty common.
|
I purposely write checks just to piss off the people in line behind me......if they start getting really testy, I'll write the name of the wrong store on the check so I have to start over

Around here, we have *experts* at this. First, always have 1 item that nobody knows what the heck it is, like "Eggplant Relish" (a real example, too). After everything is rung up, dispute the price. They'll do a price check, and it'll take several trips for the stockboy to get you to tell him that it's in the asian section, not the condiment section. This is a great 7-10 min. time waster. Don't pull out your checkbook until the final total is rung up. Then fill out the check, but make sure that you don't give the cashier the check until you've completely logged the check in the checkbook, and recalculated the total (4-5 min time waster there). Finally, make sure that *I* am behind you, I have one item, and I'm dying to take a leak. Hope these tips help :thumbsup |

Maybe they don't want the fuss that comes with paying CC.
|
Who the hell uses checks.. for anything.
Even sponsor payouts.. I wish everyone would just do wires automatically. :) |
i havent seen people use those in supermarkets, thats kind of weird. cheques should be extinct by now
|
checks seem so backwards to me
I havn't used a check in about 10 years now (besides getting paid from sponsors) and I don't know anyone else who uses checks. I don't even know if they still exist around here. Why do americans use checks anyway? Don't they use it for many things like paying rent or utilities? seems kinda weird If I had to write a check all the time my landlord would kick me out for forgetting to do that every 2nd month :winkwink: |
Read the news? Several large store chains have double charged card customers lately. This can cause overdrawn accounts, and a nightmare trying to get it fixed. Paper checks for me until that kind of crap stops.

ACH is obviously replacing paper checks for many applications, such as direct debit for recurring payments such as insurance, car payments, mortgages and of course, porn memberships. ;-)
There are still many people who do not have online banking, so online bill payment is not a viable option for them. Even when it is, if the receiving party is not set up to receive an ACH, guess what happens.... the bank prints a bank draft (paper check) and deposits it. People who use credit cards often pay their monthly bill by writing a check. Same with Cable bills, phone bills, etc. Paper checks are ingrained in American society and the use is still on the rise. 65 billion checks will be written in the US this year. http://mitsloan.mit.edu/newsroom/2002-gupta.php In October of this year, Check21 (the imaging of checks) will be the next major change to how paper checks are processed. |
