Joe Satriani or Steve Vai? (Best Guitarist)

:GFYBand

What's your opinion?
Who's the best guitarist?

AWC 05-24-2004 02:35 PM

George Lynch

Nydahl 05-24-2004 02:35 PM

Joe is fucking great but my the best 1 is Patt MAtheny :thumbsup

Ice 05-24-2004 02:37 PM

They are both very good IMO but I would say Satriani considering that Vai took lessons from him when he first started. Vai showed up with a guitar with no strings and a pack of strings and wanted to learn how to play. Mind you Vai did get alot of his style from Frank Zappa which is why they only sound a little bit alike. Another one of my favs is George Lynch... :glugglug

SoundMan 05-24-2004 02:37 PM

Steve Morse

Metheny is awesome...

but so is Al Di Meiola

Randy Rhoads wasn't too shabby either

There is NO such thing as a "best guitarist".

There are so many awesome guitarists...

Carlos Santana. Gary Moore, Larry Carlton, Lee Rittenauer, Michael Hedges, Phil Keaggy, Jimmy Page, Luther Allison, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Buddy Guy, Eric Clapton... and a hundred other guitar slingin' muthafukkahs.

aaron 05-24-2004 02:41 PM

AlienQ - BANNED FOR LIFE 05-24-2004 02:44 PM

Between them 2, it has to be Vie hands down:)

Vie is far more creative and expressive with the guitar I think.

Not to mention he is still doing insane sweeps that are amazing.

:thumbsup

I'd have to say my top 10 are

Johnny Lang
Eric Clapton
Jimmi Hendrix
Eddie Van Halen
Chet Atkins
Jimmy Page
Kurt Cobain
Duane Allman
Ronnie Vanzant
Stevie Ray Vaughan

No real order, just good at what they do/did best :)

tony286 05-24-2004 03:10 PM

Not a big fan of both of them prefer Santana , Al Dimeola and the guy from pink floyd.

Actually the first real heavy distorted rock guitarist was Jeff Beck when he was in the yard birds. Jimi could sing and be upfront but the first was Jeff Beck.

Giorgio_Xo 05-24-2004 03:22 PM

I took guitar & bass lessons with Joe Satriani. Personally, I think Vai and Satch rock, but they aren't the best around. Jeff Tyson and Alex Skolnik is by far the most amazing students of Satriani. While I find this type of playing impressive, it lacks profound depth and sentiment.

My rock favorites would include:

Peter Green, the original guitarist of Fleetwood Mack (back when they were a blues band with songs like Black Magic Woman [original version], Green Manalishi with the Two Prong Crown, The Albatross.

Gary Moore, Thin Lizzy and solo career.

Jimi Hendrix, the god.

Michael Schenker, this guy sings. Listen to UFO's Strangers in the Night all the way through in one sitting. MSG, UFO, Scorpions.

George Lynch, listen closely to his solos off the first Lynch Mob album. The River of Love guitar solo uses alot of John Coltrane sax elements.

Frank Zappa. Without Zappa there would be no Steve Vai.

Eddie Van Halen, party rock at its finest.

Jimmy Page, awesome song writer.

Eric Clapton, Cream.

There are other rock players I like alot. I won't mention jazz players since it is completely different.

The first distorted (overdrive) guitar were the Kinks.

The Yardbirds were an incredible band: Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck, and Eric Clapton!

SinisterStudios 05-24-2004 03:26 PM

Stevie Ray Vaughan, BB King, Jimi Hendricks to name a few

SexxxyChat-T 05-24-2004 03:27 PM

Between just those two - Vai is better

I saw them both live on G3 (With Petrucci, who is my fave guitarist). And Satriani is the most boring stage performer ever...

Niko Bimini 05-24-2004 03:27 PM

Seen both live and htey both kick ass!!!

But Joe gets my vote! :thumbsup

I say Neither. Satriani is fast but I don't particularly feel anything in his music; it's almost synthesized. Steve Vai rocks but he's still not my favorite.

I think Roy Buchannon is the best "emotional" guitar player, he tells a story when he plays and his guitar sounds alive. I think Hendrix owns the guitar world for ass-kicking rock and creativity. I'm not old enough to have seen Hendrix play live and I hear a lot of his experimental stuff missed the mark but the catalog of work he left behind is still awesome in my opinion.

Rock guitarist
#1 = Eddie Van Halen for sure.

Man i fell down my chair when i first heard Eruption in 79 (or was it in 78, anyways...)
WHOAAAAAHHHHH !!!!!

Put it on, and crank the volume and remember that it was in the late 70's

Awesome !

ChewbaCreative 05-24-2004 03:34 PM

all these guys is a great guitar players, but Mike Novikoff from Lux Eterna is a guitar G O D !!!

SpaceAce 05-24-2004 03:34 PM

By the way, "best" is unfair; there are too many artists with too much skill but if I had to pick the ones who stand out completely, they would be the oens in my post above.

Other notables include Stevie Ray Vaughan, Carlos Santana, Ry Cooder, B.B. King and Gary Hoey.

FUCK YEA, but mines is Tom Morrello!!!! Rage motherfuckers!!!!!!:thumbsup

PissFunny 05-24-2004 03:56 PM

Vai. Technically, tonally, emotionally and as a stage performer. Satriani writes better melodies however.

The post says Vai vs Satriani and all you cocks start talking about other guitarists like Tom Morello and Kurt Cobain etc. These guys are no where near the same league as Vai and Satriani.

Steve Morse on the other hand and is way up there with Satch and Vai.

Anyway Vai is touring Australia in July and I'm as happy as a cock in a hahahahashop about it.

TheGoldenChild 05-24-2004 04:07 PM

Satriani between the two

but of all time?

there is only one answer....

HENDRIX

PissFunny 05-24-2004 04:41 PM

do any of you nuggets even play guitar seriously?

TheMob 05-24-2004 04:48 PM

You people have no idea.. Fred Durst!

No, seriously... Steve Vai is amazing. He even wrote a song about this place! (Track 1 on Flex-Able Leftovers) :winkwink:

jonesy 05-24-2004 05:00 PM

PissFunny 05-24-2004 05:13 PM

"vai and satch are good but no distinguisable style or sound"... are you high no one sounds like Vai. You can tell it's Vai instantly. no one else has vibrato like that.

as for

hendrix
page
van halen
leslie west
schenker
rhodes
beck
clapton
young
iommi
slash blowing them away... bullshit! they are all good, innovative guitarists but Vai is last person you'd ever want to have a head cuttin' duel with.

arial 05-24-2004 05:14 PM

I'm a Satriani fan myself, DEVILS SLIDE BITCH!!!!!!!!!!!

bhutocracy 05-24-2004 05:19 PM

neither, can't stand either of them... If you're going virtuoso, gimme al dimeola.

tootie 05-24-2004 05:23 PM

Randy Rhoads :(

Shagpipe 05-25-2004 01:02 AM

Satch has that great balance of chops and melody. The songs he writes are more memorable in my opinion. Loved the live in San Fransisco dvd. Wore it out last year. I'd be thrilled to see either one play live though.
