What is more important for losing weight

What is more important when trying to lose weight, deit or excercise? Or both? Post some advice.

kelly 03-11-2004 04:58 AM

Both.

Find what works for you, base your diet around foods that you love (low fat/low cal/low carb etc) and an exercise that you can enjoy so it doesn't feel like too much of a chore.

The key is to burn off more calories than you consume.

Eat moderately and excercise a lot! :)

I lost 50 pounds in the past year.

More important? I'd say it depends on what your current diet is like.

20 minutes of cardio might burn about 250 calories or so - depending on what you do. That's about the same as what you gain from a 20oz. bottle of pepsi. So if you're drinking three pepsi's a day you'd do better to stop drinking those sodas than to work out.

pradaboy 03-11-2004 06:17 AM

diet is most important, but in combination with exercise you can really achieve awesome things :2 cents:

I find the most important thing for maintaining a healthy lifestyle is doing what is comfortable for you.

Diets, excercise plans, routines, calory counting etc. only put you off. If you actually have the military like discipline to actually go through with them you will be so worn out when you're done that you will binge and gain 50 lb. when you lost 10 lb. from the diet or excercise routine you were on.

A year or two ago I finally managed to start losing weight... I honestly don't know how much I lost because that wasn't important to me. I wanted to be healthy .. not shave pounds. I started eating healthier and going for walks.

Fuck the gym.. I tried it .. it's too 'fake' and sporty for me. I gave them lots of free money before I finally cancelled my membership. I made the subtle changes that worked for me. I like going for walks .. so I try to walk for one hour every day.

I gave up pop.. I started eating less meat and more vegetables. If I'm at a family birthday party I have half a slice of cake instead of 3 slices and 5 scoops of ice cream. Or often times I'll pass all together.

When someone asks me 'are you on a diet? you look great!' I say no. I've made life style changes that work for me and that are bearable for me.

I couldn't imagine counting calories or planning out my meals or going to the gym. It's all about what you can manage to do over the long term. Losing 30 pounds in one month is the same as a get rich quick scheme.. that kind of mind set never pays off.. you have to think what you can do, and be happy doing, for the long term.

good balanced meals are the key with exercise. Try eating smaller meals, low carb and cut out the bad fats. People forget that it's also in the way that food is cooked as well that makes a difference.

Exercise is key. for some people the gym doesn't work only b/c they don't know how to work out. It's not just about lifting weights. It's HOW you lift the wieghts. A good personal trainer is key, not just someone who counts your reps but someone who'll show u how to do the exercises properly and create a workout which is catered to you.

Cardio is the biggest one if you need to lose a lot of weight. don't try to start out big, go small. try 20 minutes a day for the first couple of days and then go to 30 then 40 and so on..one hour is a good peak. You'll get the blood flowing and burn fat. Then go and work out for 1/2 hour.

:2 cents:

Dont eat late, some people say 5pm, but we are all up late anyways so I would say the cut off is more like 9PM if you stay till 2AM or so.

Dont drink soda, drink sometihng like Green Tea, it has way less sugar, carbs, is healthier, and believe it or not, soda packs on the pounds.

These are two small diet changes that will make a huge difference. You will find yourself waking up hungry in the morning which is good, have a good hearty breakfast and make sure to get your meals in earlier.

Now add some weight lifting and cardio and you should be all set.

Oh, btw, stress also helps you to lose weight, although I wouldn't necessarily recommend it. But hey, it worked for me so I mention it. :winkwink:

cayne 03-11-2004 09:04 AM

eat less calories than your body needs a day. easy?!

monica 03-11-2004 10:07 AM

Start with small changes.

For me, it was finding a kind of excercise that I really enjoy. I started taking jiu jitsu lessons, and I love it. Nothing exhausts me more than a good roll on the mats.... even the gym can't make me sweat that much.

For me, cutting down on the sweets is the probably the best diet change I could make.

Lykos 03-11-2004 10:18 AM

Excersise only, couse if u r on dieth, the momment u start eating normal again u will get wight again...

sickkittens 03-11-2004 10:19 AM

Usually it's a combination. When I excerise, I'm usually never hungry, so that helps.

Za Ha 03-11-2004 10:45 AM

My prof lost over 150lb in under a year. (LONG Story but its true) and he told me diet was 90% of his success.

axelcat 03-11-2004 10:45 AM

Both of them play a big role

hoe_vender 03-11-2004 11:05 AM

not being fat in the first place

m00d 03-11-2004 11:08 AM

what is most important is that you burn more calories a day than you consume. ..

B40 03-11-2004 11:23 AM

Both...if you don't want to make drastic changes, make a few small changes to your diet and exercise a bit...
