Maxtor 160 GB drives are shit

Second drive to crash on me (bad sectors or something according to max blast) in 3 months! Are these drives not meant for raid? WTF!?!?

senseidru 02-27-2004 11:29 AM

Maxtor drives own.

That's all I buy, got 80GB ATA133 + 120GB SATA in my main machine, not using them for RAID though.

Alky 02-27-2004 11:30 AM

160 RAID? wow... you need that much space?

hornycash 02-27-2004 11:31 AM

i am happy with 2 x 60 gig.... works fine, enough space

Morgan 02-27-2004 11:31 AM

i got a few that work perfect

- Jesus Christ - 02-27-2004 11:32 AM

They are better thna Western digital... in terms of longevity.

KMR Stitch 02-27-2004 11:32 AM

Are you useing the ATA100?

KMR Stitch 02-27-2004 11:33 AM

Oh yeah and the; Buffer Size 2 MB

jact 02-27-2004 11:33 AM

I've had more then my fair share of Maxtor drives fail lately, but when you've got a dozen or so on the go, it tends up the odds.

bdld 02-27-2004 11:34 AM

dang 160 is a lot, i thought 50 was too much for me

KMR Stitch 02-27-2004 11:35 AM

Hands down...

IBM

or

WD are the best

http://westerndigital.com/en/product...d1200jbrtl.asp

Ya, i have a 40 gb HD
Still have like 70% free...
lmao

FiReC 02-27-2004 12:07 PM

I'm running 2x160's in striped mode for serious speed. I'm beginning to think these drives weren't meant to handle it. I've never been through this many drives in a such a short period of time ever.

hova 02-27-2004 12:12 PM

I have 3 and I have never had a problem, had some problems with the Maxtor 120 tho

FiReC 02-27-2004 12:17 PM

Maybe the raid controller is somehow corrupting the drives?

Alex Xe 02-27-2004 03:50 PM

My choice is 2x72GB Scsi Seagate!

lurking 02-27-2004 03:52 PM

wake up people, Fujitsu.

cocky 02-27-2004 03:53 PM

Never had any problems with them.

FreeOnes 02-27-2004 05:19 PM

I also have bad experience with Maxtor drives in my RAID system... 60 or 160 it doesn't matter. Both sucked

Maxtor is the shit :thumbsup

RedShoe 02-27-2004 05:33 PM

we had over 12 Western Digitals crash on us. :)

All we use now are the 120 Maxtor's Anything over that fails.

Vitasoy 02-27-2004 05:38 PM

In my experience Maxtor owns Western Digital hands down...

I had about 12 Maxtor drives and only 2 failed me... Now for WD I got about 6 of them and 2 already failed me.. :) All bought around the same time frame.

AdultNex 02-27-2004 07:22 PM

Maxtor > WD

The WD 8mb cache HD's are the best, I've had several of them with no failures.

My past few machines had cheap Maxtor drives, and they have both failed on me.

beemk 02-27-2004 07:24 PM

i must be lucky, ive NEVER had a hd crash on me before.

Oracle Porn 02-27-2004 07:25 PM

I got 120gb maxtor and works just fine

stev0 02-27-2004 07:27 PM

i was going to get one of those... decided on the western digital instead. Now im glad i spent the extra $20.

schiz 02-27-2004 07:40 PM

Maybe that's why Best Buy had them for $80 after rebate

404 02-27-2004 09:49 PM

dead drives in 10 years = 2 seagates (one was only months old) and 1 fujitsu

hmmm.. frys is where I got both of the failed drives from. Maybe frys gets the shitty batches?

Theo 02-28-2004 12:46 AM

i got one 80gb a couple months ago

it died within a week and it was slower than WD

after that i got one 200gb WD......no problem as always. I remember we had a maxtor in a w2k server that had problem as well.

FiReC 05-04-2004 08:53 PM

HOLY FUCKING BAWLS just lost a third one!

these fuckers definitly weren't meant for raid or something is seriously fucked up in my system.

Same here.

One of the component suppliers I use for my PC said there was a 6 month period when Western Digital's factory was having some major manufacturing kinks happening and a ton of drives went out with defects.

I've always like WD's the best. I've only had one drive go bad and it was my own fault cause I drop it off a work counter and it took a 3 ft dive. The data was recoverable, but it was clicking away.

I'm using some Maxtors also. Of all the drives I use, they seem to be the noisiest.

I really like this new Seagate External drive that came out recently. Got a really sharp design. Totally quiet and running perfect so far.

RawAlex 05-04-2004 09:15 PM

Raid 0 on two 160s gets you almost 320 gigs SATA... great for video work :-)

Alex

dnsmonster 05-04-2004 09:27 PM

The 160 Gb SATA Maxtors run so freaking hot they melted a plastic enclosure inside my case. They haven't failed yet but I wouldn't be surprised if they did some time soon. Nothing could run this hot and last long.

What model was it? :(

Huggles 05-04-2004 09:56 PM

No shit!

These drives are CRAP. I've lost 4 of them in the last 12 months.

JDog 05-04-2004 10:01 PM

What raid are you running them on, I haven't had many problems with Maxtor on raid.

I have 5 Maxtor and their well over a yr old, all 80 gig & 60 gig drives.

- Jesus Christ - 05-04-2004 10:02 PM

I've used EVERY BRAND.
The older maxtors were ok but like western digital they recently began outsourcing thier cheaper drives to mexico.
The best cheap 120GB HD's PERIOD..... Hitachi.

Never had a problem with WD or Maxtor :::: knock on wood::::

I have 2 WD 200GB and 2 Maxtor 160GB and never had a problem.

Would be in deep shit if they failed..

Jim_Gunn 05-04-2004 10:12 PM

I have three 200 Gb Maxtor external hd's and two 250 Gb Maxtor external hd's and I have never had a problem with any of them.
