Hosting company question
How many dedicated servers would I need to run a 1,000,000 plus unique site smoothly?
Let's just say it's a tgp site with: 1 regular size graphics logo. 2-3 banners. Everything else in text. 35k page size or so. All links open in the same page so there would be a lot of reloads. |

A small virtual account should work fine for you. :2 cents: |
depends on how much you want to spend and how badass the server is. as long as they are static pages it really wont put that much of a beatdown on a server. but you could always do two servers and round robin dns for cheap load balancing solution.
but in reality 35k page size with that many hits wont do that much damage load wise. |
2 servers

No I'm not looking for hosting. I'm just wondering what would be good solution for a site that size. I know shit about hosting.

www.realitychecknetwork.com - they can get you all hooked up :)

What are you running for scripts?
|
To run a 1,000,000 uniques / day site you'd really want 2 - 3 servers
Config A: WWW MySQL Config B: WWW MySQL 1 MySQL 2 All depends on how intensive your scripts are. As far as running it on 1 machine? Nearly impossible you'd need like a dual 3.0GHZ + XEON with 2GB RAM, preferably 4GB RAM and even then things could get complicated and slow. |

Please once again. I'm not looking for hosting. I'm just curious about a hosting solution. |

No needs to rent a server just for 1 site... Just get a virtual plan and pay only the bandwidth you use.
|
Personally, I'd start out with one server with a decent config, grow into a multiple server solution when warranted, keep the overhead down. If the site is up and your already doing that much then that's a different story. In that case I'd recommend a loadbalanced multiple server solution. If your just starting out keep the overhead low, you can always upgrade your setup.

you'll need your own server. you can't run that on a virtual. think people... a virtual is just an account on a server with like 30 other people your just going to crash or slow down the server fucking up everyone else sites. get a dedicated.

1. High performance hardware, RAM is very important 2. An optimized kernel + apache config Can't stress how important these two factors are, if your interested hit up this guy on ICQ: 4930562 he can explain it in better detail. |

Yeah I understand that I would grow into multiple servers when needed. That is why I keep saying that I am not looking for hosting. I just wanted clarification on my needs in case my site grows to that size. |
