Search Engine Optimization for Dummies

I'm a complete n00b at seo. I hear about people making a living from search engines and wonder how it's done... is there anywhere to find out about this kind of thing? I'm not talking about PPC, of course.

I've seen discussions on Google algorithms, cloaking, etc, yet I know nothing about this. All this talk, I seem to be missing out on something.

I add meta tags, submit to search engines, then that's it?

I know that pages can be optimized, but is that all? What steps and stages am I missing? Are there any good resources about this?

meta tags arn't important anymore.

you might want to wait a couple weeks i know escortbiz has some software coming out which should be really nice.

other than that find the forums dedicated to seo and google talk and you will learn a lot pretty quick

hope it helps

the title is very important and the backlinks.
"submit to search engine" = waste of time. google sends 85% of the traffic and yahoo 10%.

A good meaty meta description tag never hurt anyone. Meta keywords appear to be totally irrelevent though.

To be honest no one really knows WTF they are doing. It's all guess work. If someone KNEW the Google algorithm maybe.

Asked WG. He's the only guy who knows. :Graucho

SEO advice is generally worth how much you paid/didn't pay for it, or at least that has been my experience :(

I have tried to do my own SEO with a certain level of success I guess ... and I have found that any "free" SEO advice or tutorials (I used to get all kinds in my email - WEB PRO NEWS etc.) are not usually worth shit.

It seems that true SEO is a well guarded secret, and for good reason - your ability to drive SE traffic to your website is one thing that will make or break ANY website !!

I have dealt with a few SEO companies, and a few individuals also, and usually got results much better than trying to wing it on my own.

Currently I am dealing with "Panky", who is a free-lance SEO consultant/marketer, as well as a moderator at both Xnations and STFU.

Her rates are very good for the service she performs. She looks at your site, and gives you a couple pricepoints and SEO strategies to chose from, depending on your budget.

I would recommend her to anybody who cannot afford, or does not want to pay 4 figures a month, (or MORE!)

Panky's ICQ is 511-400-74

Thanks Brad. Was great to finally meet you in Vegas btw.
I'm as baffled as the next person to a lot of updates Google has done lately but like any algorithm, it can be figured out and manipulated even without the entire formula :)

Here's one document on the net that explains how the Google PageRank algorithm works: http://www.iprcom.com/papers/pagerank/index.html
