Have you re-installed the latest version of Media Player 9?
You need the codecs to make sure it works correctly.

cheese please ICQ me if you will; i want to give you temp pass to the member's area of a paysite, and see if YOU can download a test mpg i put there.

i think this is just a simple little glitch like a security or privacy setting maybe.

Download build 8. Every codec you will need.

ZoiNk 12-23-2003 08:08 PM

There are 2 ways to get around this:

A) force them to be downloaded and not streamed. I don't have the info on this, but I can pull it up if need be. My tech stated that is what he does on paysites.

B) Follow what microsoft says and use https:// you can get free ssl certificates that work on most machines(90%+ by default for free), and if you pay a small fee, ones that will work on 99% of them by default. By default, I mean the person doesn't have to accept the certificate or install it.

The reason I asked was that I had that problem, and found out it was the codecs that was the problem.

No money need be paid. :)

Zoink---are you saying that everyone's is running their member's area under "https" ????

uptheyingyang 12-23-2003 08:15 PM

what i'm trying to do is "dumb down" the solution so that the average member who probably has default settings on his computer can watch the videos.

and you can see i'm not much of a video guy here.

but ever since wmp9, i've had to put mpgs outside the member's area and protect them with .htacess, and change passwords every 3 days.

big hassle.

so i'm looking to put everything back in member area.

No, I was saying that was a possible way to get around it, esp according to microsoft's wording. Most people have it setup so you have to download the whole file first before you can start watching it. Haven't seen anyone use https on a paysite yet, but it theory it should work.

yes, i understand.

problem is i can't get IE and wmp9 to play any mpg filess protected in my member area.

netscape and quicktime will do it fine, just not the microsoft products (which 90% of people use)

might be my complicated e-commerce setup, don't know yet.

It is b/c WMP9 won't play files in members areas from the player itself. Simple as that. They removed the ability to. Solution, get it modified so they are forced to be downloaded. If you need someone to do it for you, email [email protected] and ask him for a price quote on doing it. Not sure how busy he is, but I know he knows how to do what you need done.

Yes, that is what I have seen in every paysite I have been in lately. That is the typical and universal fix.

Zoink- forgive me for asking a really stupid question.

i can't modify my surfers' media players. what sort of fix are you talking about?

BV 12-23-2003 08:45 PM

Get a programmer to write you a script for your members area. In a nutshell the movies will be stored in an unprotected directory that changes names frequently.

BV, is that what you have to do? is this what you are doing if i may ask?

uptheyingyang 12-23-2003 08:52 PM

and if so can you recommend a code writer, or off-the-shelf script?

Va2k 12-23-2003 08:59 PM

haha I know I know how to fix it, If you have ever used a program like kazza etc.. there is a file you need to find and delete it causes this problem and it will fix it every time :) hit me up if you want to know the file I have to go find it Peace..
TOM

Va2k 12-23-2003 09:03 PM

shit i found it :) Goto Start, search and search for mcspmpeg.ax ocne you find it you can either delete it OR just rename it to mcspmpeg.axold and there you go all fixed and you can view streaming videos once again

uptheyingyang 12-23-2003 09:05 PM

ok cheeseboy got $50 and gave me some good advice.

uptheyingyang 12-23-2003 09:07 PM

ok, starting to get some good stuff here from a bunch of people.

i am not the lone ranger on this.

LOTS of paysite webmasters are having the same trouble i'm having.

i won't keep any secrets about the fix as soon as we have it.

there's some positive synergy happening right now!

Fletch XXX 12-23-2003 09:09 PM

i hate windows media player.

like... a lot.

major resource hog...

uptheyingyang 12-23-2003 09:21 PM

ok, this guy va2k might be a genius, standby.

if he's right, he may have a very simple fix that will help many.

working on it now.

I'm pretty sure, I don't know too much of the details as my partner/programmer wrote it and he is traveling for the holidays. I'm sure some other programmers will chime in soon with some info. :)

uptheyingyang 12-23-2003 09:37 PM

hang onto your hats you guys,

there might be such a simple solution that tricky programming won't be needed.

testing now.

i'll share results shortly.

there are geniuses in our midst---only took a few bucks to surface them.
