instant DNS propogation across the entire internet!
i wish :(
|
Yeah, don't we all wish.
Your best bet is setting your TTL's low. |
I wish too! Would make it easier to move servers! :)

When moving servers you can have almost instant propogation.
Just reduce the TTL (time to live) of the domain to say 30 mins or even less a few days before the move. Then move the server and change your dns entries to reflect your new A records. The change will be seen by the rest of the net in less than an hour. Just pop your TTL to normal a few days after the move to be nice to the DNS system. |
:thumbsup :)

Use a third party dns service where you can change the IPs. The nameservers stay the same all the time.

The only way to decrease propogation time is to reduce your TTL a few days before making changes if you want almost instant propogation. |
Use a 15 minute DNS TTL - and leave it that way forever.
The Internet can afford each server hitting a DNS lookup once every 15 minutes, believe me. I keep spare servers at different isps rsynched hourly and ready to go - and use third party DNS, so I am always ready in case my isp fucks me like everybody else has. |
alrighty then

Just rsync from a n hourly cron job. You have to install a key so it won't ask for a password, works like a charm.
|
why not just have the home page at your old site redirect the page to the new IP while it propogates? That's what I always do and it works great
|
Yeah, that works fine if your old isp is up and running. But we've all heard enough horror stories to convince me I need 2 of every service or vendor I use; just like to sleep well.
|
I always fall for this shit...
RegisterFly is pretty fast tho |
I'm a server admin newbie... How do you set your TTL?
