WTF does Google PR really mean????
 

Anyone have the time to explain to me the significance of PR ratings? I have many sites that are 6 and some 8, but what exactly does it mean?

It's a meter of "importance". It's a logrithmic scale of how "good" your site is compared to every other site on the web. Each time you link out to someone, a part of their PR is duplicated and added on yours. When it's all averaged out you get the number based on what range your site falls into.

PR means PageRank ... that easy.

Does the PR play a big role in SE searches?

its only one small piece of the whole pie they use to calculate :)

Ok this explains why I have so many sites with high PR's. I link to my own sites on my sites. So as a group they feed each others PR rating I take it. Even my trade signup pages have PR's of 6. Wierd.

For more competative terms, it seems to play a big role. It's more important that the anchor text of your inbound links be relevant to the content of your site. The content of course factors in keyword density, etc. When it comes to optimizing it's easy to get a #1 spot on a specific not competitive keywords, I get tons of them regularly. When there's 50 other sites optimized just as good as yours PR and luck become huge factors.

Yeah, there's actually a formula you can use to figure out how much PR each page on your site will end up with based on your internal linking structure. It's not exact but when repeated alot of times it's very accurate. A PR8 is very high and will pass ALOT of PR to reciprocal links. Remember it's lothricmic so a PR8 can be considered roughly twice as good as a PR7 and so on(so alot of people believe, me being one of them).

i have some of the top listings for some VERY competitive terms and don't have more than a 4 or 5 on those domains ... i'm just better at it than most I guess ;)

Do you link directly to your 404 page? That seems odd that a 404 page gets linked enough to be a PR8.

No, but I send all 404 and directory snoopers from 16 servers to that one page.

I think I need to hire someone to optimize my sites for SE's and get higher listings. I have totally ignored this and need to do it. Any suggestions who is good and affordable to do this?

That's the thing, I don't really get how it ended up being spidered let alone get such a big PR boost. Either google is following location headers(which I thought was untrue) or the toolbar is just fucking with you. It's my understanding that sometimes it BS's PR on the toolbar based on similar pages on the sites importance. Like I always thought the GFY threads weren't really PR1, it's just because it's a dynamic page and GFY itself has good PR. How could each individual thread be instantly spidered and indexed?

I remember searching for some casino traffic on google a week or 2 ago with a VERY broad term like "site traffic" or something like that and chickentraffic was #1. Now I can't find it under any of those terms. It should be good after the update.

theres also some scripts out there that can determine it on various programming sites.

I don't want to but I have to say you are missing out on a shit load of traffic.It would take nothing but a few gaps in your words to start dominating the serps like link-o-rama.

Fuck now they are 8's again. I think it is obvious that not everyones toolbar records the same PR for the same site. If I visit a few pages of a site, it's PR increases. Anyone else notice this?

Why is your 404 page a PR8?

Answer: Google toolbar GUESSES at what PR ranks should be based off of higher directories or base directory. The PR that google toolbar shows is NOT the PR that google actually uses in its indexing. It is a rough estimate, being as it uses whole numbers. If you want the real PR, use directories that you know google is indexing. Also, base domains have the real PR (to within 1 whole number).

I hear google will fake page rank, also, within the algo...pr is actually calculated on a scale of 1 - 200 I believe. Additionally, putting too much weight on PR will have you running in circles smacking yer peter with a wooden spoon (You'll go Bonkers), backlinks baby, backlinks...they are the heart of pr anyway.

It seems like it is meaning less and less these days. Some of my sites that have the best / highest PR values are falling way back in the SERPS. I think Google has grown tired of allof these PR jockies and is devaluing it to some degree.

I read on WMW that there is about to be a big change in the google algo.

Chocker - By all means do that. PR8 is insane for an adult site. As a matter of fact, I've never even seen it before. It's probably just a hiccup in the system right now, but if I were you I would optimize the hell out of that page. You are in a great position to get some high quality SE traffic.
