6.2 million Opera users -- Design your websites to follow HTML standards!

You all thought Opera would go away -- but it's just as popular as ever -- because of the powerful features. And this is only one of the "alternative" browsers out there besides Netscape.

You think it's only 1-2% that's not using MSIE -- but that's not accurate information because many non-MSIE users are surfing in MSIE emuation mode which means that the browser will identify itself as MSIE to the server -- this is usually more convenient because many websites block access if you aren't using MSIE (because they are too retarded to follow standards) -- if you don't push for standards -- you'll only fuck yourself in the end with more expensive, crappy software from the Microsoft monopoly.

Opera... 6,200,000 unique users worldwide.
US - 1,200,000
Europe - 2,500,000 (Germany - 1,245,000; UK - 250,000)
Japan - 985,000

User demographics
Over 70% use Opera more than 30 minutes per day
70% shop online
86% spend more than USD 100 per year online
58% have a college degree or higher
Over 50% work in the IT/computer industry

DarkJedi 11-17-2003 01:39 PM

Yeah Opera is okay.
Stupid name though. And all the features confuse me.

ZoiNk 11-17-2003 01:40 PM

A surprising number of people surfing porn do use opera. Mainly b/c it doesn't save the history of where you surf with a little check of the button. Everyone's under 1 window, so you can do 1 close to get everything including all the popups to disappear. Definitely use html standards, and your stuff won't look like crap or simply not show up in it! Good post man.

Yeah! Opera is great, and it's a big part of the internet browser market now. And, it's not like Netscape who show the pages in a crappy fucked way!

FUCK NETSCAPE!!!

True and you press F12 and you can turn off popups or click "Links" and leech an entire page of movies or pics with the "quickdownload" feature.

slapass 11-17-2003 01:51 PM

so with 6.2 mil you figure they are up to 2% of the sufer market? Not that I want to piss away 2% of my income but also not going to make me blow a gasket designing for them.

Sin_Boy 11-17-2003 01:51 PM

the following book is a great start for web designers.

designing with standards

loverboy 11-17-2003 02:24 PM

its really hard to create a site compatible site to at least 3 browsers, but i guess it now time to make it those changes.

StacyCat 11-17-2003 02:28 PM

How funny that im reading this in opera vs IE today :-)

I like opera, for two reasons, 1) the popup blocker, and 2) its not a memory and resource hog like IE is.

My design looks good in both IE and Opera. I hate netscape, so I dont care how it looks, but i design and code really simply, so it doesnt matter most of the time.

davidd 11-17-2003 02:53 PM

How many people using Opera buy memberships? Now that is the question. When you look at the OS combination with Opera too, you will see a large percentage of the Opera users are running Linux or FreeBSD. Which falls back to the same question, how many people with a Free OS and or Opera buy memberships.

Does not change the original point that your HTML should be flawless to begin with. Internet Explorer compensates for slopiness where as Mozilla and Opera do not.

For those wondering, on the above stats... No one buys who uses a Free OS with Opera and it is marginal (almost unmeasurable) those who purchase using Windows + Opera.

Mr. Porno King 11-17-2003 02:55 PM

If your browser identifies itself as MSIE, it's not my fault if MSIE code gets pushed to it.

DrGuile 11-17-2003 03:15 PM

Here is some real data:

Explorer 89.4%
Netscape 7%
unknown 1.7%
Microsoft URL Control 0.3%
Opera 0.1%
Googlebot 0.1%

And that over a very significant sample.

Where do you think? From our own traffic stats.

Fuck that. Companies make money by pandering to their majority. America is built on fucking over the minorities, and it's made them the most powerful nation on the planet.

You wanna cater to the Opera market? Great! You can corner it in about 5 minutes cause nobody else gives a shit.

grumpy 11-17-2003 03:54 PM

Now post some keynumbers of IE users. Then look again...and think....is that percentage worth it. Doesnt mean your html sould be okay. But i think if you are an respectfull webmaster you html code is okay :-)

Juggernaut 11-17-2003 03:56 PM

First started using Opera because it was the only brower with intergrated pop-up technology that actually worked.

loverboy 11-17-2003 03:57 PM

as long as Macromedia incorporate this changes, then its easier for us all to make those site compliance, but for now, every one will find it difficult to adjust.

I've registered it. IT's worth the money.

Yeah so you're using hahahahahahahahahaha or your server logs -- I can press F12 in Opera and identify as Mozilla or MSIE or Opera -- I always surf as MSIE so I can get into my bank's website.

I think people run FreeBSD/Linux is a Desktop not because it is free but because it is by far more stable that M$ Windoze!

Juggernaut 11-17-2003 04:12 PM

I've always used http://www.thecounter.com/stats/ their users are broad; demographics wise, so it's a pretty good indicator.

buddyjuf 11-17-2003 04:13 PM

70% shop online
86% spend more than USD 100 per year online

wow!!!

Dirty F 11-17-2003 05:14 PM

That's not the issue.. the issue is that less linux users buy porn membereships, cause they're not freakin morons like windows users. nobody said they were poor.

Rorschach 11-17-2003 05:30 PM

Opera is indeed the dog's bollocks. :thumbsup
