PPC vs SEO?

If you have enough capital to last you, can you build a successful business with adult affiliate progs through paid SE placement and no SEO? My reasoning is if you are going to pay $0.05 per click vs NOTHING for top rank, well if 5 cents is going to crimp your margin and make you lose money, then SEO probably wouldn't work either even if it's free traffic!

good point

it's about time someone tackled the seo vs. ppc subject

Suckitbitch 10-25-2003 12:15 AM

Yes, but do you have the skill level to combat every fuckwitted self-procalimed "SEO" spammer for good terms?

And by the same token, how much extra cash do you have to pay for useless PPC clicks when either the crooked engine decide to fuck you with fake clicks or your competitor's use their click networks to fuck you out of your listing?

Why not do both? If you can sustain a profit doing PPC for affiliate programs, then do it. If you can do SEO as well, do it. Why not do both fronts? I do.

it took me 2 ppc campaigns to figure out how to do it.

the first one i got my ass handed to me.

the second one i barely broke even.

just like SEO, ppc is a skill. however, SEO is "free", while ppc is expensive until you learn how to do it.

plus there's nothing like paying full price for SE clicks and find out the hits are being sent from foreign click farms.

One aspect I like about PPC personally is that there is in fact a guarantee. The guarantee is that you don't have to worry that your listing will fluctuate wildly in the SERPS, however, what happens in 5 years when everyone is bidding $0.50 per click minimum and your adult paysites still are around the same price? Then it's not so great...

But I like Wired's advice to do both, doesn't hurt to diversify that way

The main worry I have is click fraud will begin to get higher and higher and as a PPC customer there isn't all that much we can do when disputing charges other than complain and hope the engine will refund those clicks we believe to be fraudulent.

A lot of time is consumed with reviewing and managing your PPC campaigns compared to SEO. Margin-businesses like PPC requires 100% attention. No slacking.

SEO is much more laissez-faire. Although I wouldn't even call it SEO what most SE spammers are doing.
They are using the shotgun approach. Most bullets will miss big time, but there's always a few that hit the target.
