Lensman's amazing tip of the day!

As you probably know, many cities turn lights green for ambulances, fire engines, and cop cars. What you probably don't know is that many of the stop lights respond to flashing lights.

So try this, as you approach a red light, start flashing your headlights, to your amazement, the light will turn green for you. It doesn't work everywhere, but when it does, it's a thing a beauty.

Be sure to thank old Lensman for this amazing tip of the day.

Usually does not work in the city but more in rural areas. Just my experience trying this since I was 15 and my buddies Mom told us this. She was an EMT.

JDog 10-17-2003 12:01 PM

This works good as you're coming up to it, but if you're already sitting at the light, it's not so great from my experiences!

Eric 10-17-2003 12:02 PM

Thank you Lensman for telling me what I have known since I went to High School. Now lets see if tomorrow you can tell us how you know which lights it will work on and which it will not.

Also this doesn't always work based on the where the sensor is and it is set to react to the flashing lights of an emergency vehicle. So cars that have low lighting or lights pointed downward won't always set off the sensors.<font color="606060"

yep, it really works.... used to do it all the time when rolling through a town in the middle of the night. No sense stopping a 40 ton rig when there's no one else around... just flash the highbeams a few times about a hundred yards away and presto! Green light.

Hey, that's a cool idea, and it makes perfect sense too. :thumbsup

boneprone 10-17-2003 12:12 PM

In highschool we had a spot light we'd shine out the front window right up at the signal to get the lights to turn green just before we would get to the intersection..

Fuck.. We must of been bored as kids..

Now i could care less if I have to wait at a light.

asuna 10-17-2003 12:13 PM

some cities only recognize certain flash patterns, from strobe lights, the regular lights on some cars aren't powerful enough to have the sensor notice it

do you drive a hummer?

Turboface 10-17-2003 12:16 PM

I wouldn't want to have to tell a police officer the name of the board that I got this tip from, after he pulls me over.

It does work in TORONTO

thats what i do every day :)

voodooman 10-17-2003 12:22 PM

Thanks Lensman,

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but for one,
that trick only works at night, and two, its not
because of Emergency vehicles, I mean come on,
they have a license to run red lights, but its more
for the stop lights that use sensors instead of
scales under the pavement so when
a car runs over it, it triggers the light to change.

newwaveconcepts 10-17-2003 12:23 PM

that's the story I told the cops as I went thru the red light, my flashing didn't stop the other traffic. can I send you the tab now?

Eric 10-17-2003 12:23 PM

Wouldn't you like to know

Yep, this worked like clockwork for me where I grew up.. only at night though, and only if no other cars were near the intersection.

EZRhino 10-17-2003 12:25 PM

I laugh when I see people do that at a street light in my neighborhood. All the lights around here are controled by em sensors in the street. :1orglaugh

DarkJedi 10-17-2003 12:27 PM

cops, ambulances and shit dont need green light to come tru.

so why would there be sensors ?

good troll though.

on the contrary.... yes they can run all the red lights they need to in any given situation, but don't you think it might be better (as an emergency service personnel... cop, ambulance, firetruck, etc) to have a green light in your favor so that the rest of traffic is stopped, thus avoiding unneccessary risk of collision at what is probably a most inopportune time? Not everyone hears sirens you know.... people fail to get out of the way all the time. Perhaps their stereos are too loud bumping some shitty Eminem tune at levels that would deafen Superman to hear what's coming from the other directions.

EscortBiz 10-17-2003 12:33 PM

Here is another tip, just installed all over the US in the lights

Scream GFY as you approach for at least 2 minutes, the light will turn green

GeXus 10-17-2003 12:33 PM

Wow! What an original idea.. pffff :helpme

(please dont ban me)

TheFLY 10-17-2003 12:34 PM

I knew a guy that didn't like to use his breaks to save gas -- so instead of stopping at a STOP sign or at an intersection -- he would just flash his brights real fast to let the other cars know he was coming :1orglaugh

Serge_Oprano 10-17-2003 12:36 PM

Lensman, I did that and some other GFYer did the same thing at the same time at the same intersection and now we are both in the hospital...

you will hear from my lawyer!

Is this the vast knowledge that amp was referring to that he learns daily from you? I knew about this in high school.

Pornwolf 10-17-2003 12:42 PM

Incredible facts Lens and Eric. The streets will no longer be safe! The cool thing is that when you are driving you will be able to tell who is a webmaster at the stoplight!

brand0n 10-17-2003 12:42 PM

i do that at every light:thumbsup

Carlos 10-17-2003 12:45 PM

Ill have to try this...I never heared that before :)
