don't you think it might be better (as an emergency service personnel... cop, ambulance, firetruck, etc) to have a green light in your favor so that the rest of traffic is stopped, thus avoiding unneccessary risk of collision at what is probably a most inopportune time?

in my country if the siren is on and the special lights are flashing all the tarrfic around them has to pull over and stop - making room for the passing cop / ambulance / firetruck

And if the person behind the wheel can't hear the siren and/or see the car with flashing lights - they should get their license suspended.

that's wonderful man.... suspend away... but administrative punishment done on paper at a later date doesn't really help the person having a heart attack or whos house is burning down, when the ambulance or firetruck just got t-boned in the intersection 6 blocks away now does it.

Actually, on some older lights, it DOES work. Modern lights can't be changed this way. I used to work for a company that installed emergency equipment and 2-way radios in police cars, fire trucks, ambulances, etc. What actually changes the light (especially on ambulances) is called an Opticon. They (the recievers) are installed on a lot of major intersections and usually look like a black beer can with a little pipe sticking out the front, usually pointing towards the flow of traffic. There are several variations but most look like that.

On vehicles is the Opticon strobe. Modern versions look like a regular strobe light. They are usually mounted in the center of the main lightbar and flash at a steady rate. The Opticon traffic preemption reciever on the stop light will notice the flashing and if it is the correct frequency, will change the stop light.

There's a hefty fine for having your own Opticon but I *hear* that there is an infrared version available that can hardly be seen.

So try this, as you approach a red light, start flashing your headlights, to your amazement, the light will turn green for you. It doesn't work everywhere, but when it does, it's a thing a beauty.

Be sure to thank old Lensman for this amazing tip of the day.

Lens, you are correct that flashing your lights can change some signals. As a former firefighter I can tell you that it is because of the first version of the "Opticom" system. However, it does not work with the newer systems as they now work off of a sequenced strobe pattern. Plus, many municipalities have passed a law that will get you a ticket for flashing your high beams at the signals. :2 cents:

Damn! Should have read the post above mine before posting!

In my opinion this is a stupid tip, even if it was true it would be a stupid idea to trash a system designed to help emergency services! Flashing your lights won't help you, it'll only make you look stupid!

I dare someone to post the timeline pic.

BVF 10-17-2003 02:47 PM

nice tip...I"ve never heard of that before....I'll bet it works better at night....

But wait a minute....all the times the cops just flash their lights when they are about to run a red light didn't seem to do it....

Sharky 10-17-2003 02:49 PM

I've heard of flashing your lights, as well as honking the horn 2 or 3 times. I swear both of them work:-)

I've been doing it since I was in high school!

Another handy driving tip: funeral processions are an express lane waiting to happen if you're driving in the same direction as the parade of mourners.... you might get a few dirty looks, but talk about making excellent time!

thanks for making my post for me

:thumbsup

the newer systems here in plano do require a certain frequency to trigger the lights to change.. I too had a buddy that installed these systems on fire trucks and police cars.

lightswitch 10-17-2003 04:18 PM

Yeah it works, I use to date this chick who drove an ambulance, she rigged her own personal car's left blinker so flash @ teh perfect rate. I fuck up the traffic lights all the time. Kinda funny when the light just turns red you flip your blinker & its back to green within momnets, while the rest of the fuckers @ teh light are confused as hell & pissed off.

What if you flash your tits to the red light?

Mr. Jim 10-17-2003 05:17 PM

Jim Holio tip of the day...

The next time you bring home a case of beer open the refrigerator and let it sit inside for about two hours. Take a beer out and it will be cold just like the rest of the items.

...and I do not care if you have known this since you went to a homecoming dance or anything else completely unrelated

Works better in a truck since most emergency vehicles have the flashing lights on the roof and higher than most cars' headlights/highbeams.
