Help! Computer is constantly rebooting!

My win2k machine is in what seems like a neverending reboot loop. it starts to load (gets to the windows screen) and then goes into reboot. it won't go into safe mode, it won't boot from CD.

anyone have any ideas? how can I fix this fucker??

detoxed 09-08-2003 01:10 PM

I have a desktop doing that too :) Except its WinXP

cheekycherry 09-08-2003 01:11 PM

Sounds a bit like the Blaster worm?

You ran Norton on the disk?

Fletch XXX 09-08-2003 01:12 PM

Uh oh.

Sharky 09-08-2003 01:12 PM

I'll paypal $50 to the person who can provide me with a working fix to my solution. If what you say works, $50 is yours

Sharky 09-08-2003 01:13 PM

I ran norton on it last friday.
nothing detected.
I haven't been able to get on my machine today other than first boot up. I clicked on a link to a page on my server and it rebooted, it hasn't come back since

Yoooo, I help for free.

It's the Blaster worm as told before. Go download the patch. Your system won't reboot if it can't connect to the internet.

Sharky 09-08-2003 01:15 PM

I was able to get into safe mode in the command prompt once (haven't since) I looked for the msblast.exe file and it was not on the machine

clubsexy 09-08-2003 01:15 PM

read about the blaster. That is one of the symptoms

Here you go, step by step.

Sharky 09-08-2003 01:17 PM

still rebooting even without the network cable plugged in:-(

the removal tool would be great if i could get into the machine to install it.

PM2 09-08-2003 01:19 PM

have you altered the hardware in the machine? If you can boot it into safe mode run sysprep from a command prompt. May fix your issue.

Hey, a chance to win back our super bowl bet:winkwink:

Have you tried getting it to boot to safe mode???
edit: asked too late lol

Fabuleux 09-08-2003 01:24 PM

When exactelty does it reboot? Random?

Could be other virri. Or your CPU cooler fell of your CPU/is dead. CPU overheats -> reboot. Could be 1000 things, hard to tell.

I would open the machine and re-seed all your cards. If it goes through the boot process (starting windows 2000) and reboots after that point.... chances are pretty good that its a hardware issue...

also be sure your processor is configured at the correct speed.

in the boot sequence, just after the windows 2000 screen shows up and the status bar on the bottom fills. same time every time

RSCLuke 09-08-2003 01:30 PM

Yep... I had the exact same problem... was Blaster Worm.

Use this link to remove it:

Good Luck!

Save yourself time and stress...forget fixing it...install windows on another hard drive slap the faulty one in as a slave, get your data and move on...

detoxed 09-08-2003 01:39 PM

From what I understand (this is what my computer does) he cant run a fix because Windows never loads to the point of being usable. My Windows XP machine loads to the Windows XP loading screen, then reboots. Its not a big deal because its a 2 year old desktop I barely used.

Fabuleux 09-08-2003 01:40 PM

If it won't boot from CD it could be a hardware problem. But since it reboots always at the some moment... I give up. Try booting from floppy with hardware check proggie.

Sharky 09-08-2003 01:44 PM

I just noticed this on bootup... what does it mean??

primary IDE channel no 80 conducter cable installed?

JSA Matt 09-08-2003 01:47 PM

It's the DCOM RPC exploit.. just run windows update. You have to beat the attack though, we were racing over here to get windows update finished before it reboot again : )

Muff 09-08-2003 01:49 PM

$50....

For faster datatransfer then 66Mbyte/s to your hard drives you need an 80 wire conductor cable instead of 40 wire cable. Every even wire is connected to ground. But this won't be the problem since your computer will just downgrade the speed to 66MB/s.

Who says reinstalling Windows is gonna help him?

No one. But chances are good that it will fix the problem considering that is most likely where the problem lies.

only prob is I can't get far enough into windows to do that

jeroman 09-08-2003 01:55 PM

Do you have another harddrive with a operating system ?
Plug it in as master and set your fuckup as slave.

Take whatever you need from fuckup and transfer it
to your master.

Then unplug master and in with fuckup again and the magic:

Format C:

or boot fuckup from your CD with your OS disk
and reinstall everything over your current install.
Might help !

That's very easy if it won't boot from CD...

jeroman 09-08-2003 02:19 PM

ups, missed that one.
So use a "Disk" then with CD drives..

TheDr 09-08-2003 02:38 PM

Change the boot sequence in your BIOS. Since the pc thinks there's a valid OS on C: it doesn't look at D: and hence you can't boot from the CD.

Sharky 09-08-2003 02:39 PM

my system repair disks didn't work, however I'm making more from another computer... any other ideas??

Yes, I did that.. it goes in and asks me if i need to install raid drivers, I select no.. and then it reboots

brand0n 09-08-2003 03:09 PM

i had this happen, got sick of not being able to fix it and gave it to a friend, he threw it away.. good luck man

ztik 09-08-2003 03:15 PM

I'm not sure if I am correct, I use win98 on all of my machines and that is what i'm best at trouble shooting with.

Reset your bios to the default settings and run a step by step bootup(should be able to choose that with a F8 bootup), say yes to everything making a note of each one, after you click yes on the last one (and it reboots) you should have found your problem. Its most likely a bad/corrupt driver file.

Scootermuze 09-08-2003 04:20 PM

Did you buy the 2K OS or was it crack activated?

D-Money 09-08-2003 04:26 PM

I've had the same thing happen too. My computer won't recognize a CD Rom drive and it won't go online. My external drives aren't helping either.

I gave up and started using my other machine.

I feel ya.

Scootermuze 09-08-2003 04:28 PM

Disconnect your cd drive and see if it boots ok.. If so=bad drive..

Could also be the power supply starting to bite the dust..
