Is shooting custom really worth it?
Just been doing some calculations on the value of shooting custom work.
I reckon we can shoot 5 sets and videos, solo girl in a day. If it's boy/girl or girl/girl we can do three sets/videos. All this to a standard we are happy with. Solo girl set/video will sell for $10, 50 times = $500 x 5 = $2,500 Two girl set/video will sell for $15, 50 times = $750 x 5 = $2,250 Boy/Girl set/video will sell at $20, 50 times = $1,000 x 5 = $3,000 These are riduculously low prices, but high number of sales. We still own the rights and can continue to sell it till hell freezes over. Plus we can shoot one of the sets as a magazine set and they are worth a few $$ The girl does not turn up or perform we can kick her out. We are not beholding to anyone else. I started to think about this because I had some clown on ICQ thinking we should shoot custom for twice the models fee. She wants $300 I do a day for $600 Plus the fact with one of our shooters out ill Eva and I are having to do a lot more photography. :( Thanks for listening just thinking aloud. |
I did a custom shoot for Oz at www.truecash.com - 10 girls, two strip and toys videos each for $3000. I think that is a fair price.
|
so 20 exclusive strip and toy videos for $3,000? that's $150 per video. That ain't pretty.

charly no it doesn't make sense for you to shoot custom IF those figures are your AVERAGE number of sales/revenue per set/video - sometimes people get impressed with their own numbers, so you might have 50 sets/videos that turn over 50 times a year, the hot sellers, which leads you to think 'i sell sets/videos 50 times' - gotta figure in your losers too to get accurate data.
then you are framing this as an EITHER OR dilemma - either shoot custom OR shoot for licensed content. If there is demand for both you can do both. |

I shoot about 7 custom shoots a week now and Im smiling all day long

Same here. We shoot every day and will continue doing it :thumbsup

I think you looking at it the wrong way.
You are building a product based on the opportunity cost, rather than the raw cost of the product. You dont need to charge $2500 for an exclusive, to make profit on what it costs you to produce those exclusive sets. You justify that cost, based on the number of times you could sell it non-exclusively. Are you charging $2500 for all 5 sets/videos, or per set/video? Does the client want to pay $600 per set/video, or for all of them? If they are paying $600 per, and you can make 5 in a day, thats $3000/day... call it $1000 in costs other than your time, and you're taking $2000/day for taking pics of nude women. sign me up :-) |

I think Unseen has it in a nut shell. Let the guys that want us to work all day for $600 go and buy from them who can't sell at non exclusive. You want exclusive on your site becasue it's so good? Then pay for it. |
richard
The only way to price it is on the largest figure. If it's worth more to shoot custom then shoot custom, if it's worth more to shoot it for the store then shoot it for the store. My figures were based on us shooting for a day and selling for 9 months and were average prices with the selling price low. It was based on Bargain Basement where sets sell for a lot les than Paul Markham Content Store. Unseen is right, we are getting approached all the time by guys who think because one guy will do it we all have to do it at the price. Well only if they can't sell via their stores. My figures are conservative, not inflated. |
SHOITING custom is worth it :thumbsup

Simple answer, dont do exclusve if you make more doing shop sets.
But at the same time, dont whine and bitch that a competitor is doing exclusive video shoots for $600 per scene. If i've got the numbers correct, YOU could shoot content of YOUR quality, and make profit at $600/scene. You might also look at it as a quick cashflow injection, doing 1 day/week/fortnight/month as exclusive. You get the money upfront, today, no risks. I think i must have the numbers wrong, because im my mind, if i came up to you with $3000 to produce 5 exclusive solo girl vids/pics, you'd tell me to go away? |

charly has a store and if he can make more profit shooting those videos and licensing them than he'd be stupid to sell them exclusively for only $600 - if he can sell a solo vid for $50 20 times that's $1,000, lot better than $600. |

We do not have a cash flow problem, becasue we do not shoot a lot of custom. ;) If you want to pay $3,000 for 5 solo girl sets and videos please ICQ me. I'm complaining about the idiots who think they are doing me a favour at giving us $1,000 for the five. |

@Charly,
if we shoot custom photos and we can use them as well, we sell them just as usual for normal prices. No extra costs. If the customer wants to block the photos and videos for some time, ok - some extra money must be charged. Our 104 Photographers are always pretty happe to get new ideas for shootings and make sure they are sold already once before the can start. http://www.skan-media.net |

Take a look at the sites we produce for and how much money they make for our customers. Then if you can't figure out why I charge a premium for our exclusive work, I don't need your business :1orglaugh

I think with the new 1% charge back rules, content is going to be a little more important. Webamsters can do little more against fraud or stopping the wife from finding out what hubby was paying for last month. What they can do is to ensure when the guy is inside the site he is happy with what he's paid for. THAT'S CONTENT. Not design, traffic, adverts or flash progamming. He's there to jerk off. |
