Cable Vs DSL: Which Is Best?

My cable connection sucks, upload speeds especially. So I've been asking around about DSL and people are telling me it sucks too, maybe worse than cable.

So tell me which one in your area is better and why.

I had cable in NY which I felt was decent and now have dsl in Vegas-I only care about downloading and to me the dsl is not quick enough-I know I can get a t-1 for 500$ a month 1025k speed but that's alot of $ to spend

DSL rocks. I'm on a 2 mbit and can't live without it.

gothweb 07-09-2003 06:58 PM

Cable is faster one dowloads, but slower on uploads. The nice thing about DSL is that it tends to be a better balance between the two. Also, with DSL it doesn't matter as much whether people in your area are using a lot of bandwidth at the time.

I have a friend that has cable. Downloads are faster. But DSL is fast enough. He has more downtime or congestion also.

I'd stick with DSL.

DSL modems sometimes hang though and you have to hit the Reset Connection button.

as an ex-tech....

Cable. There is no question.

They're both good if the provider correctly maintains their service. It just depends on who services your area and the prices they charge.

HighRoller 07-09-2003 07:07 PM

cable is faster unless congested at certain times of the day or too many users.

Spunky 07-09-2003 07:08 PM

2.5 dsl.Its fast enough for me and you don't worry about lag time and virus shit as with cable.

AMP-what about 1025k t-1? would you say that's better than cable or dsl?

FlyingIguana 07-09-2003 07:10 PM

i've always found dsl to be more stable with less packet loss

I had (shared) T1 in Cali.... my cable here is faster.

Za Ha 07-09-2003 10:31 PM

Had DSL, then Cable, now back to dsl.

It goes over 250kb/sec and is ALWAYS up.

tootie 07-09-2003 10:36 PM

Cable all the way. I LOVE my Comcast.net cable internet. It's always up (except once for a few hours for an upgrade, the only time in the almost one year we've been with them that it's been down), it's blazing fast, and the uploads are really fast, too.

lawked 07-09-2003 10:39 PM

ADSL all the way. Business Class ADSL.

I've have both Cable and ADSL.. it's very rare that the cable modem downloads faster than my adsl. With my adsl, i max out at 440KB/sec.

With Cable I typically get 300-400KB/sec. Uploads suck on Cable (30KB/sec typically).

Adsl uploads almost hit 70KB no matter what my neighbours are doing.

ADSL all the way!

GotGauge 07-09-2003 10:39 PM

Depends on where you live...............
No one can answer this unless they have had both in the same town you live in.....

Mike AI 07-09-2003 10:46 PM

Definately matters where you live...

I have had good luck with Cable connection in Tampa, and DSL in New Orleans....

Thought past week both were out, but were hardware issues that got fixed quickly.

eiht_98 07-10-2003 12:11 AM

I don't want to change my DSL for nothing

BluMedia 07-10-2003 12:18 AM

How fast of uploading speeds do you get with dsl?

You are talking business DSL vs Standard Cable, my 5mb dsl business line I had was much faster but it was $199 a month and cable is just $40 and plenty fast.
Uploads are 30-40 vs 250+ d/l's.

Reliabilty seems to be the same, I never had problems with dsl and don't with cable either.

www.dslreports.com

Find out in your area which is better.

Its all about the provider..
