Nysus 06-18-2003 12:51 PM

11 percent cannot find the United States.

That's really mind boggling.

Cheers,
Matt

Nysus 06-18-2003 12:52 PM

Jesus, and that's 18-24 year olds.. I thought they meant like 12 year olds or something.

Cheers,
Matt

Thrawn$ 06-18-2003 12:53 PM

49 percent cannot find New York :eek7

And you wanna rule the world,:1orglaugh

twistyneck 06-18-2003 01:03 PM

So? We need the uneducated. Who else will work at McDonalds or be cops or clean toilets or be webmasters?

ryph 06-18-2003 01:04 PM

I believe that study 100%. When goin through school, I don't think I've ever taken a course called geography.
In grammar school we may have touched on the state capitals, but that's about the extent of it. I dunno how it is now.

FlyingIguana 06-18-2003 01:21 PM

who cares where iraq is

detoxed 06-18-2003 01:26 PM

yeah really, i dont give a fuck where iraq is. I know the general region, but how many of us can really pick it out on an unlabeled map?

UnseenWorld 06-18-2003 01:33 PM

WTF is wrong with the US educational system? Back in the 1950's you had to learn some geography, be able to add a few numbers in your head, and do parallel parking, all of these being skills beyond the capabilities of most teens and twenties today.

AND YET, while the schools are busy subtracting IQ points from their students, they are eager not to offend any minorities with Euro-centric history or textbooks showing anyone but Dad staying home to wash the laundry and make dinner.

One of the biggest problems is that today's teachers are frequently as ignorant and unskilled as the kids they are supposed to be teaching, so what can you expect? It's not all teacher pay, either. It's the fact that the in loco parentis rights of teachers have been so eroded that discipline options are very limited now, so your smarter potential teachers look at the situation, see it as virtually hopeless, and instead look to use their skills in more rewarding areas.

Umm.. I can, and it doesn't even concern me. I can also pick out Uganda, Sri lanka, Usa and peru.

liquidmoe 06-18-2003 01:51 PM

Standards are decreasing but why? Unqualified teachers are an outcome of the problem, but not the actual cause. How can you have qualified teachers if the education system is going down the drain, but the reason its going down the drain is that parents dont take an interest in their child's education. In fact now both parents are usually working or divorced and kids come home and watch TV. Back in the 50's when education was taken seriously because it was watched over by parents, times have changed, parents dont watch their kids anymore, as result kids fail. When kids fail alot standards have to be lowered so that no one is really held accountable for the stupidity of the current students.

But anyway its prefect for American capitalism so that those few and educated can have an easy time exploiting the many uneducated.

yup, i've seen many people just pushed through the system. then when they get into high school and can't read then they realize there's a problem.

i think bigger classes are also a problem. teachers are stretched too thin and can't give certain students the extra attention thats needed.

Question # 49: Find North America on this world map.

Question # 50: Find water on this world map.

Question # 51: go back to the top and answer question #1.

Question #1: What is your name?

Ironhorse 06-18-2003 01:59 PM

That's because American maps have already changed to reflect the new geographic reality of Iraq becoming the next US state :thumbsup

But in truth US public education is seriously lacking, I think it's purposeful: in a society of highly educated geniuses, who will flip burgers and clean toilets? Before you say immigrants, I'm sure nobody wants to end up with a class system based on racial differences or for that matter the masses of immigrants needed to support these low level industries.

Critics should remember the survey points out 7% of a population of 278,058,880 (2001) and the age group 18-24 is usually busy chasing skirts or dick whatever their preference, so it's not unusual really.

I think Holland may be an exception because I remember for years many folks from there would drive right through Timisoara to reach the Black Sea :winkwink:

But I am frustrated at the fact that here in US my kids are not getting the best education they could. My daughter is in 7th grade and only now is she studying a second language. This is already too late, I feel. The curriculum here is very lax, I compare it to my german school education in Romania as a kid. By 7th grade I spoke romanian, deutsch and enough english to speak it fluently and without an accent within one year of getting off 'the boat'.

However, both my kids went to a private school for their first years of education, where they were exposed to french and much more focused attention. That cost $600/month, more than most people's rent, so you can imagine not too many people have access to this education and sadly many kids who have access to this throughout college, end up squandering it away boozing it up 24/7 in college. It's really a problem as these same wastoids end up as legislators, business people etc.

if you're gonna make comparisons, try to avoid comparing apples to oranges.

No one ever asked the Americans to locate a city(state) in Iraq.. just to locate Iraq.

So it would only be fair to ask the people in Iraq to locate the US.

It was Americans in that survey that they asked to find specific states.. and they couldn't. I'm quite sure that the people in Iraq could find different locations within their own country just fine.

the CIA does not believe that's comparing apples to oranges. What is a city(state) anyway????

Did it ever cross your mind that some people might not have taken this surver very seriously?

what is a city or a state? Ok, if you don't know then I can see how you'd have a hard time finding it.

And yes.... I can see how "oh, I wasn't trying" is always a valid excuse when failing a test :1orglaugh

And.... what does the CIA's information on Iraq have anything to do with your comparison? They asked Americans to find Iraq. You said that they should make the people in Iraq find Idaho.
That's not a fair comparison no matter what you or the CIA has to say about it... not that I believe in the slightest that you just phoned up the CIA to ask if they think that it's like comparing apples and oranges.

I asked what a city(state) is. Do you know?

Here's a hint: it's not Iraq nor Idaho nor the U.S. nor Canada nor Austin.

As in...city(state)... CHOOSE ONE. I didn't feel like typing out "city, since in this case there are no states in Iraq" but if you knew anything about anything... you'd have guessed that.

Yes I did read the link... impressive info the CIA has on Iraq... which still has NOTHING TO DO WITH YOUR COMPARISON.

Yes, I had put Ohio instead of Idaho... and have now changed it since Idaho is what you had in your initial post. Sorry for wanting to make sure that the info is consistant. Why, did you think that i was going in there to make huge novel sized changes that would completely alter the very direction of this conversation and just hope that you wouldn't notice?

If american kids were more educated, they wouldn't agree to go die for stupid economic wars. They wouldn't be stuck in a situation where two mafias, an oil mogul from Saudi Arabia (yes, Bin Laden's family is a giant in oil market) would take revenge on another oil mafia (yeah that's Bush family, the missing link) by killing thousands of innocent american people. The USD government always managed to lie to his own people since 50 years by misinformation and they're very happy if the masses are not educated. More control you know. Ignorance leads to atrocities.

That's one of the most ignorant statements I've ever heard, even for GFY. :321GFY

US is the only country in the world with constant stream of the most intelligent, best educated people from all over the world adding to the pool all the time.

Let me also add that while most countries haven't yet figured out a good water supply system, US is already looking for water on Mars and beyond. Now that's a sign of low intelligence.

Oh I forgot, here's one more for ya from all your friends in the US :321GFY

Parents not taking an interest in their child's education? Well, I think their interest is frequently misdirected away from learning skills and toward micromanaging policies, preventing any effective form of discipline from happening, and defending their little ones when they misbehave even if they are guilty as charged.

I think parental involvement is one of those "be careful what you wish for" things, because it would only work if parents respected teachers, but respect is one of those other things that has gone down the tubes in recent decades.
