i seem to get errors with <p>

Are you seeing these errors in a browser or validator ?

Sounds like your validating againts a DTD that does not allow the things mentioned in your message.
What are you doing that you have chosen to code xhtml?

i was doing it for an assignment

i still get that error but i scrapped <p> and i just used <br />
