You got any plans to get the 2023 iMac?

When it releases later this year with the M3 chip? Or are you going to take advantage of the inevitable price drop on the current 2021 models with the M1 chip?

Basically the same screen etc - just the M3 chip as opposed to the M1 ?

machinegunkelly 06-21-2023 01:39 PM

Nah, I'll pass.

I used to love my 27 inch imac, now I dock a MBP into a 40 inch screen and it just makes more sense.

sandman! 06-21-2023 02:09 PM

or maybe i wont be buying a mac just like any other year

lol

2MuchMark 06-21-2023 06:06 PM

I have 2 Mac Mini's, 1 Intel, and 1 M1. The M1 blows the Intel machine out of the water. It is so fast, I love it. I can run both MacOS and Windows 11 on it at the same time, both with lightning speed.

I was going to buy an M2 when they came out but have decided to wait for the MM M3's which will probably come out in in late '23 or spring '24.

If you get the iMac M3 let me know what you think!

I've actually decided against it now - After further research, I'm looking at getting a mac mini M2 with the 512 SSD. The cost of that along with a Dell UltraSharp U2723QE monitor, is a lot less than even the current iMacs - Let alone whatever comes next.

I dont need raw power - Just something that will last and last and plod on, like my current 2009 iMac has... Only reason I'm thinking of replacing it really, is that Im getting 'End Of Life' messages for things like chrome etc, where they wont be supporting the 'High Sierra' 10.13.6 OS anymore with further updates (Which is the most up to date OS my imac can use)

Plus its slowed down of course... Also, it makes sense to not wait until it dies completely - That way I still have access to see my current settings etc, for setting up the new one to behave in exactly the same way etc...

But the mac mini is an M2 so that's better than an M1, and I already have a mouse and keyboard, so no point in getting them again, just for a 'purdy color' & a fingerprint Scanner for security, when its only me using it...

Doing further research, I discover that I can also get £150 off the mini, if I buy it through the apple store on amazon, as opposed to the 'apple' apple store itself...

I haven't pulled the trigger yet, but that's the direction Im now heading in - Plus I love the idea that it supports 2 screens as my mac sits directly below a 55inch LG QNED TV, so I can use that with it as well. Plus a single USB C cable to deal with connecting to the Dell monitor, which in itself, contains a range of ports that are more varied than the mac mini... See Pic:

https://i.imgur.com/dsB4Qep.png

Anyway, I'll update this thread in the future, when / if I go ahead :thumbsup I'm still very much in the planning stage atm. I'm not so worried about the cost, or 'saving money' as I am about getting the right thing for me, that will last a good few years, like my old one did... I dont wanna do something then think 'Wish Id just got another iMac' - But I think this monitor & M2 mac Mini solution, may well be a better solution long-term...

If anyone sees any potential failings in my plan - Please let me know - I'm open to constructive advice, but please - No 'Dont buy a mac, get a PC posts' I have a very powerful PC already. I want another mac to replace my old one - So I'm getting a mac - & I dont need the portability of a macbook either :thumbsup

Nope... I still do work with M1 MacBook Air ;)

fuzebox 06-22-2023 08:46 PM

Last Mac I had was bought in 1998.

fris 06-23-2023 06:10 AM

first mac i got was imac in 2013, then i got a 2015, 2017, 2019, and currently 2020, doubt i will go silicon, since there is stuff that is still intel, and my 128gb of memory, i9 6 core is plenty of workstation power for me currently.

i only really use windows if i want to use a game, or if the softeware isnt available on mac.

CurrentlySober 07-13-2023 11:41 AM

Well I've just pulled the trigger - My old iMac shat the bed this morning and took 28 mins to reboot. So I've gone for the mac mini m2 with 512 storage and 16 ram.

I've also ordered the monitor I mention above - Monitor arrives tomorrow, but the mac not for a couple of weeks...

If I hadn't wanted to upgrade the ram, it would have also been tomorrow, but any upgrades take 2 weeks... Thanks apple!

Nom'... Macs are for cool people like CS and me. ... and you too, of course (awww)...

FYI Not sure you knew this, but you can run Windows on a Mac.

:D

Colmike9 07-13-2023 12:49 PM

I worked for Apple back in the day, but I still haven't used an iMac since around 2007..

I used an eMac much more often lol

I was there when Bootcamp first came out and Parallels was kind of working. I hated everyone who tried to get me to provide support for it lol..

The monitor I'm getting has a built in KVM switch - Meaning I can (theoretically) run a cable from my PC to the monitor, then switch between them using the same mouse n keyboard, on the same monitor with a single button press....

I think if I needed both systems in one, thats how Id do it. Nothing against Parallels, but its still extra cash to do something I could do for the cost of a single cable (Prob already have the cable)

When I switched to my iMac in 2009, I bought a copy of windows 7, just to install via bootcamp - It worked flawlessly, but I dont think I ever used it more than once or twice to set it up...

So I think I'll stick to them as two seperate computers going forwards - I like both the OS of mac, but enjoy the games side of windows...

Nice, yeah I prefer OSes to be separate, too. I still have my OS 7.5.5 from like 1995ish and I love those old games lol, one disk is Explore the World of Macintosh.

fris 07-13-2023 02:33 PM

i really hate windows

I hear you... Parallels used to suck but now its actually pretty good. It ran too slowly on my old Intel Mac but it flies on the M1. Then again, it was also running Windows 7 or something like that... Windows 10 and 11 are pretty good.

Actually my friend, I have a better way....!!

I have a monitor with a built-in KVM too (Dell Ultrawide 49" Something something..). The KVM thing worked but I wanted something more elegant. So what I did was connect my PC via Ethernet, and connect to it via Microsoft Remote Desktop. It sounds crazy but its excellent. Windows will run as a "Window" in any size, and it will run full screen. It saves you a mess of cables too.

The only drawback is that it is not great for gaming. You can actually game on it, but its not as good as having the PC connected to the monitor directly. But for everything else, it's perfect.

lol, when I worked there, it was worse than that. Like, I was half supporting it but officially not during the OSX 10.4 Tiger days, when Bootcamp was still beta. It also only supported XP or Vista, too, which Vista was worse than 7 imho. :upsidedow

It was also kind of annoying dealing with the Intel switch from the start. Lots of people complaining that things like Adobe products didn't work, and I'm all like "Adobe just, didn't make it yet, idk" and I got blamed a lot for some reason..

Sometimes fun things happened, though, like this one batch of Mac Pros that had something wrong with the power supplies, so when someone turned it on, it blew and sounded like a shotgun and we had to send out a lot of replacements lol.

.

I don't know how you managed staying even 1 day in technical support. I personally can't stand it. I currently have a bunch of support contracts with mainstream companies but all of them are on AWS / Azure / MS365 Admin, some Apple ADM stuff, and 3 companies running Unify / Ubiquity hardware for their networks (I love their products!). The people I am supporting are other techs, or have more interesting problems besides "I can't print".

Yeah, I was 18 and it was the best college job I could find, but I'd never go back to that kind of tech support. It just drains your soul so much that it hurts..

Yes, agreed. I think of it a bit like cars though - Say you would like to have a 2 seater convertible to drive around in - But as much as you would enjoy a 2 seater, its just not practical. You have kids to get to school etc, and need room in the trunk to transport stuff etc. So you end up with a normal car - Something that can easily do whatever you need...

But when you have the normal car - Why not get a 2 seater convertible AS WELL?

Thats why Im getting another mac - I have the PC but 'enjoy' macs as well... :thumbsup

The less people use Apple, the better.

i convertered my $400 lenovo ideapad to macos ;) much better than windows and not paid at apple prices

Instead of another computer, maybe make an external bootup hard drive from that Samsung?

Managed to make a bootup drive 1x using SuperDuper. But the applestore will configure it too.

Fits in a carry-on is a plus.
