Your getting to much information from M$ salesmen.

While it is true that almost half of the companies on the internet today run windows servers it is not true that half the webservers are windows based.

Companies and Corporations use microsoft as thier internal servers because they are easier to find someone to maintain them and keep mailing accounts on. These servers are usually well hidden behind firewalls and not the webservers for the corporations.

The ratio of windows to *nix machines that actually run webservers is about 90% being *nix and 10% being windows.

Most companies today are moving away from windows machines and hiring outside *nix people to do thier daily maintainence of thier servers. This is largely in part to the many viruses that have cost these corporations millions of dollars in lost data on windows machines.

So while your right about half the companies using windows it's not relative to half the webservers being windows.

yea i've seen that

it doesnt suggest that *nix is over 50+% though.. but it most likely is.

ProTech 05-15-2003 06:12 PM

Heh start asking the datacenters then how many *nix to windows machines they have.

Your right it may not be 90% it may be 95%

Most datacenter customers on average for every 100 *nix machines they have they MAY and I stress MAY have 2 windows machines.

Hi.. just 2 cents from a newbee

most admins i know donīt like windows.. as far as i know there are a lot of windows servers but most sites are hosted on unix/linux machines. maybe thats the reason why:

i get your point but your numbers are off
this is not about today's popular professional web hosting companies. it's about the whole web. people even setup servers at their homes

this might www.netcraft.com/survey/+proportion+of+unix+web+servers&hl=en&ie=UTF-8]help[/URL]

it doesn't like that url. the actual url takes you to their homepage but the cached google page is ok. search google for "proportion of unix web servers" and looked at the cached page for the top result. it looks to be aboput 67% unix (and rising) and 24% MS

Once again he posts without thinking. This is not true at all. There are more and more WINDOWS servers being put to use everyday for applications such as .NET, coldfusion and many other window only products. Ease of use is a HUGE seller for Windows Hosting. He is merely basing his opinion on his limited experience. Ready Hosting can attribute to this. Windows is a growing market, I highly doubt unix has it beat by 90% and I won't even bother to speculate. To say that IIS is not becoming a fastly popular web server to run for a lot of hosting companies is untrue and at best not well researched. Companies do not just use Windows for their internal networks, they do definitely run Windows Server hence why microsoft decided to market it.
Just be careful of listening to someone's opinion vs facts.

Well I would say based on Netcraft and other thinggs I've seen, that there at 2 unix/linux servers for every Windoze server. I would also venture to say that the windows percentage is NOT going up , but detiorating at a gradual rate. .Net is also being adopted at a very slow rate and runs distant second Java EE....

In the adult biz, I would say that it runs about 90% Unix/Linux, whereas in the corporate intranet environment, Microsoft might have a 50% share there.

Adult webserver hmmm maybe....but Adult is using also using
quite an amount of streaming servers and a lot of those are
