What is your favorite Top Ramen/poor man recipie?

OK this is not a work thread so it will probably go 10 pages... what is your favorite starving artist recipie & adjoining low budget explanation? Mine is Crawfish Top Ramen - Caught in Lake Tahoe when I was a ski/skateboard bum in 83 stealing recycleable bottles from behind 7-11 & returning them to the same store to buy 8 for $1 Top ramen Oodles of Noodles. Goes good with Shmidt 12 packs of beer.

psyko514 05-03-2003 06:12 PM

I'm not broke/poor, but I'm lazy so I eat Ramen.

I fry up some shrimps, beef or chicken strips and throw it into the Ramen with some soy sauce and crushed chilis.

Quick and easy meal :)

AdultNex 05-03-2003 06:12 PM

Crawfish... I can't stand that stuff.

detoxed 05-03-2003 06:14 PM

That's a good one! I'm not broke either, I just got used to Top Ramen saving my life so i got creative with it. Now I love it! Chili flavored with the water drained & add some butter & shrimp. Yummi!

[Labret] 05-03-2003 06:16 PM

yeah ramen gotta be king.

although, a loaf of bread and a brick of cheese can go far. and whats not to love about a toasted cheese sandwich and some koolaid.

a whole meal for less than a dollar.

You people all probably put regular unleaded in your cars too...yuck.

PersianKitty 05-03-2003 06:47 PM

Souper rice!

Campbells Cream of Chicken with Mushroom soup or Cream of Chicken with Herb, etc. and minute rice. You use one can of soup, one cup of water and two cups of rice. Heat the soup and the water until it's boiling, add the rice, turn off the heat, cover the pot and let it sit for 5 minutes.

SweetT 05-03-2003 06:49 PM

Well coming from someone that has always been broke, I love Ramen Noodles....had them today for lunch with a fried bologna sandwich (we had company :)

Something quick? Chicken & veggies on the grill or shrimp & scallops w/ linguine.

Something really quick? Turkey club, extra lettuce.

I actually always use super unleaded and it's a good thing - we almost blew up my Caddi filming a chase scene for an upcoming world exclusive Kylie Wilde Boy/Girl on my site. But then again, maybe using super unleaded is why my Caddi survived 250,000 miles.

who had money for a car during their salad days?

eroswebmaster 05-03-2003 06:59 PM

Okay it's not top ramen but I'll throw in some poor man recipes.

Macaroni and cheese with hamburger meat. *or turkey meat* just brown the meat and chop it into small chunks and toss it into the macarano and cheese.

Hamburger meat and ranch style beans.

Toaster grilled cheese sandwich.
toast the bread in the toaster, then throw some mayo on the slices, add cheese you're set.

Jambalaya. Buy Zatarains jambalaya mix, cook up some link sausage (cut up of course) add it into the mix and damn you've got some good shit...in fact that's just what I cooked for me and my nieces ;)

Any noodleroni mix, just add tuna and you've got a "casserole," toast some bread throw it on top and you've got Shit On A Shingle ;)

Those are just some of my poor man, quick recipes :)

I learned to cook good ramen while I was in South Korea, from a korean friend.

You get the really spicy korean ramen, boil the noodles with the vegetable pack, pour off almost all of the water, empty that evil red pepper hot pack in it, 2 slices of kraft cheese, and some kimchi. You can add some shrimp, beef, chicken or pork also.

Its so hot that it almost makes me cry to eat it, but so good that I cant put it down.

I love this stuff. You gotta have Ritz crackers with it to scoop it up. Oh man, that is the best.

Salad Days... I heard of that term, what is the actual definition?

i hate fancy food, the junkier, the more sodium the better. My blood pressure is 3000/2500.

Ramen rules, nothing added. Beef or chicken flavored.

Lipton noodle soup and Saltine crackers, i dump so many crackers in there it turns into a gluey bowl of mush.

A delicacy is Triscuits and cheddar cheese on top - pop them in the microwave. Ok that's getting expensive, sometimes i like to throw all caution to the wind and live for today.

Koolaid rules. It tastes like no other similar powdered drink, must be some secret ingredient in the formula. I like my Koolaid watered down.

Favorite food - BEEF JERKY. But jerky is expensive, the good stuff anyway.

Manwich - pound of ground beef, can of Manwich, bread - that's living my friends.

Good question, made me go look it up.

I always took it to mean ones down time. Everyone has had a point in their life where they were broke as fuck, some longer than others. If you havent, then you havent lived.

http://phrases.shu.ac.uk/meanings/301600.html

Thats what I turned up, had no idea.

Minor Threat has a song about salad days.

Mutt 05-03-2003 07:31 PM

you're right, Jonestown, that weirdo knew how much people love Koolaid, he couldn't have pulled it off with Tang or Gatorade. It was the Koolaid.

Hi Roy, is Kylie still at your house? What was the stage name of the girl in the 'SuperGirl' t-shirt?

phogirl69 05-03-2003 07:34 PM

Dude, if you're broke just buy chicken drumsticks. You can get like 15 pieces for $3.95 and it will last 2 weeks and just eat it with rice and broccolli, so its healthy and low fat too. I like to cook chicken with a lot of chilli paste, oil, and a bit of oyster sauce, and green chilli peppers so it gets super spicy... yummmm

Ramen and Cup O Noodles is nasty, just thinking about it makes me want to throw up....

Marcus 05-03-2003 08:06 PM

poor man food?

A big bag of popcorn and drink kool aid.
Popcorn is great, it's cheap and fills you up.

And boxes of pasta. a .60 cent box of pasta can last you a whole day. That's why I never order pasta at a restaurant, I refuse to pay $18 for something that costs .60 cents.

KRL 05-03-2003 08:08 PM

What's Ramen? Like a euphemism for Macarooni and Cheese?

69pornlinks 05-03-2003 08:22 PM

chicken top ramen w/green onions and crystal hot sauce

Shoplifter 05-03-2003 08:35 PM

In Canada it's Kraft Dinner. Or if you're really poor you can have generic macaroni and cheese.

On Sundays if you're lucky you can put a can of Tuna in. Mmmm.

cherrylula 05-03-2003 08:46 PM

peanut butter and jelly sandwiches mmm

pornguy 05-03-2003 08:55 PM

Poor man story and recipe??

Well tonight for dinner we gathered all the sticks from under the trees and built a nice little fire. Then we boiled water.

Rain water is the best. Add a dream of beef flavor and you are set.

Total cost 0.00$

Stold the matches and the water from the neighbor!!!

MicroChick 05-04-2003 11:14 AM

Heat up a can of Campbell's Mushroom Soup. Add two cups of cooked rice. Toss in a helf cup of defrosted frozen peas. Add some butter. Finish it off with a can of albacore white tuna. Once it is mixed and ready to eat, place on plate and sprinkle with some crushed potato chips. YUMMY!

BVF 05-04-2003 11:19 AM

I was just in the county jail and I saw a ramen recipe that I've never seen before.

They take the ramen noodles, and crush them up real good with shit like doritos, cheetoes, cheese crackers, potato chips, etc. etc....

They roll all of this shit up in a napkin and crush it up real good and use a playing card to mix it up nicely.....

They they put the shit back in the microwaveable cups, add water, and microwave it....

I wasn't there long enough to see how it tasted but they seemed to LOVE it......

MicroChick 05-04-2003 11:32 AM

County jail??? I was told by a hacker who was located at Metropolitan Detention Center that the big items were colas and canned tuna. The menu was so bad that prisoners hoarded snack foods. However, this particular prisoner was thrown in solitary confinement for having stacks of pepsi and mulitple cans of tuna in his cell.

Would the guards have bothered him if had stored Top Ramen and Campbell's soup? Hmmmmmmmmmmm

MattO 05-04-2003 11:34 AM

A few years back I was living in Brooklyn and broke as shit. It was Thanksgiving, my roommates were out of town so I was by myself without a single dime.
The only food in the house was a box of beef bullion.
The stove was broke, so I had to use the hot water from the tap and wait for the cubes to melt.
Real good Thanksgiving dinner, luke warm broth.

MicroChick 05-04-2003 11:40 AM

Matt0, I hope you are doing so well today that you will never have to look at or taste another beef cube!

fnet 05-04-2003 12:04 PM

More on Campbell's Mushroom Soup...

A friend and I devised something particularly disgusting called White Boy Burritos.

Put white rice on a white torilla, add a slab of that crazy white soup, roll it up and then nuke it. mmmm trailer food

Sarah_Jayne 05-04-2003 12:45 PM

ramen style noodles are actually fairly pricey over here compared to in the states. I could eat them all the time but my hubby would divorce me so I actually have to cook.
