Things That Help You Sleep Better

Ok, I don't sleep much but when I hit my bed I really just want to fall asleep.

Anyone know of any gadgets like water sounding machines or lights or something that will help me fall asleep faster and better?

BlueDesignStudios 03-30-2003 10:07 PM

Ah I'd say lights not be a good idea.. if you're trying to fall asleep they should really be off :1orglaugh

As for relaxing water sounds.. tried it once, it's very annoying and it'll probably make you want to go to the toilet :1orglaugh

Stobe lights and laser beams will do the trick

Once your head hits the pillow, try to stay up instead of trying to go to sleep.

1) Jacking off releases soothng hormones. It's safe, it's effective, and it's cheap.

2) Melatonin (melotonin?). A soothing, fairly safe hormone you can get in health food stores.

3) Over the counter sleep aids contain the exact same active ingredient as Benedryl, which is usually cheaper, especially if you get the store brand clone.

By contrast, alcohol, while it will put you to sleep, usually results in fitful sleep unconducive to rest.

a few beers before i sleep has always made the difference from either staying up and staring at the tv or just rollin over and sleepin

My cousin used to listen to spoken books, they're so boring that he'd be asleep in under 5.

Yep. When I really need to sleep, I take 2 melatonin (3mg each, so 6mg total) and two benadryl. Works like a charm. I also got one of those digital clocks with the ambient sounds, mine has ocean waves, rain, crickets, white noise, etc. I like the white noise one best -- sounds like a TV tuned to an empty channel, like static turned down very low.

Believe me, I've tried everything. I went through a period of about 8 months where I was phobic about sleeping at night, only felt okay sleeping in daylight, but I NEEDED to sleep at night. The melatonin/benadryl combo was the only thing I hit on that helped me.

You reminded me of something I should have added to my list. Either soothing sounds (which you can buy on CD!) of rain, distant thunder, crickets, running water, rain on the window, OR soothing music, Normally, I HATE ambient music, but it's so boring it's great for putting you to sleep. The music of Patrick O'Hearn or Harold Budd are particularly good for this purpose.

I vote for that too.

also a Tempurepedic bed works wonders. Ever since I got one of those I sleep less hours but when I get up I feel well rested.
Allot of your rest while you sleep has to do with your pressure points. If there is no pressure on them then you will get better REM sleep which will result in shorter but yet productive sleep.

Just rub one out. Always works for me:thumbsup

Melatonin will make you fall asleep at a regular time every night. It's mostly used for jet lag and it can be found in herbal stores.

KCJ 03-31-2003 04:13 AM

but can it be gotten without a doc's prescription?

Yes. It's not considered a drug. It's illegal in Canada though because there was some fad going around a few years ago that it was a wonder pill to make you live longer and keep your looks. Total bull, but it does work for going to sleep.
I don't think anyone knows about long term side effects.
Melatonin is the hormone that controls circadian rythems.

For me to sleep, I HAVE to have a fan in the room. Even if it's blowing against the wall. I just need the sound to sleep :)

When you're feeling tired, stay awake for another 12 hours then go to bed.
