Why do people wear "uniforms" for their activities or social class?

This is something, I've always gotten a kick out of. Why is it people feel the need to wear uniforms for their specific hobbies or social activities?

ITs like when you were in high school. The stoners all had long hair and wore black, the surfer kids wore the surfing shit, the jocks wore the jock accessories ect..ect..

However what I'm talking about is actual adults. You probably see it everyday and never think about it. But think of cyclist all wearing their dumb spandex biking uniforms. People on Harley's wear their little leather chaps and leather vests. The dorks on BMW motorcycles wear their little BMW jumpsuits.

The worst of the worse are the NASCR crowd, back when I lived in Daytona they would walk around wearing fucking pit crew uniforms for their favorite drivers teams. It was insanely funny.

There are likely dozens of others, but why do you think people don't just dress like normal adults, why do you think full grown adults continue on dressing up into some socially approved group uniforms for their various lifestyle or hobbies?

Do you have any clothing with corporate logos on them? Hypocrite?

Choopa Phil 07-09-2014 12:47 PM

I dont think its a uniform as much as it is wearing the appropriate clothing for the activity. Cyclists wear spandex to keep cool and motorcyclists were leathers to protect their skin from coming off if they fall.

Maybe ill start wearing a suit when I go to the gym so I dont look too uniformy

Definitely! I wear a full tux with a top hat for my workouts, wear my chewbacca costume to weddings and wear my wetsuit and flippers while riding my motorcycle. You know? just so i don't 'conform'

I'm off to the cleaners though, picking up my bee keepers suit, have some baseball games this weekend...

Some of it is as people have already said, it is appropriate for what you are doing ( like wearing leathers on a motorcycle) and some of it is just for social acceptance. It is a way of telling other like minded people that you are like them and you belong in the group.

There is a very interesting scene in a documentary about Star Trek fans that makes a lot of sense. In the movie one woman fights a battle with a local court because she wants to wear a Star Trek uniform while on jury duty. The court won't let her even though she shows them proof through photos that she wears it most days in her regular life.

They told her that the show wasn't real and she wasn't really a part of the Star Trek crew so it wasn't appropriate. She then pointed out that it completely acceptable for people to wear jerseys and clothes from local sports teams. Those people aren't on the team. They have nothing to do with the team. They are simply fans of the team yet if they wear the teams clothes nobody bats an eye.

Actually no, I have no clothing with visible corporate logos. I do have a pair of converse chuck Taylor's with the little star logo and a baseball cap with a little S and a star for some sports company. I dress like a normal person would dress, not as a walking billboard.

Btw why does this make you angry? Are you one of those cyclist who wears the little nut hugger shorts and shirts that are two sizes too small with the neon orange helmet to match your neon orange sneakers?

seen you do this a few times now, including to myself, when zero anger is displayed. Do you not know what the word 'angry' actually means?

Going by this imbecilic thread, I'm guessing that's the case.

In normal life if someone was calling me a asshole, liberal, commie [insert random right winger insult here] ect..ect.. well I'd assume they were angry with me. So when I see people raging and trash talking by calling someone names I just have to assume they are angry or they have turrets.

No. The notion that you think people should dress in a way that YOU approve of, for YOUR comfort, is aggravating, yet I understand how it fits right in with your leftist mentality. That's what you people do. You attempt to dictate to others how they are approved to live in every facet of life. You claim sole ownership on what is or isn't "normal" and anyone that doesn't fit into your definition is "wrong".

Your very existence is an insult to freedom.

So in other words you do wear nut huggers and spandex shirts that are two sizes too small. It's cool, no biggie I just wondered why people feel the need to dress in approved uniforms because they do a specific hobby or activity.

Leave it to someone whom thinks that the govt is in a big conspiracy about killing bin ladden to turn into into something political.

Are you retarded or something? There is appropriate clothing for all the many activities in life. Do you think it's appropriate to send soldiers to Afghanistan wearing jeans and Chuck Taylors? Do you think it's appropriate to go swimming in Dockers khakis and loafers? Maybe the cops should wear leisure suits. Maybe your doctor should go to work like it's "casual Friday" every day. What the fuck is wrong with your brain?

Fool, they are tight because it is appropriate attire for cyclists. It has been already answered in this thread. The fact that you still wonder why indicates that you are either stupid or God knows what.

This is probably one of the dumbest GFY posts of all time. How do you compare Bike shorts and Motorcycle gear to a fan wearing a jersey? You are a schmuck or this is a troll. Not sure yet.

DBS.US 07-09-2014 08:31 PM

People just want to feel like they are a cool because they are part of something.

I never said anything about sports teams jerseys.. I said NASCAR fans walking around in pit crew uniforms.. I used to live in Daytona and every time there was a race, it was like a clown convention with people walking around like walking billboards.

https://ingrainedmedia.files.wordpre...4187_full.jpeg

Does that not look a bit silly to you? I mean hey I get it support your team, but the team isn't DUPONT.

Also the biker shit.. Leather chaps or a vest with no sleeves aren't saving anyone's ass from road rash. At best the chaps might keep some bugs or dirt off your pants. Actual leather pants and a leather jacket, yes that will help save your ass from road rash but what most bikers wear is just a costume.

It's like people dressing up like cowboys.. Do you see any indians running around with feathers in their hair? Nope then why do we need cowboys.. LoL

Do you think it would be normal for so done to walk around dressed like a pirate? Well it's just as silly to walk around looking like a cowboy or a biker or a walking billboard NASCAR fan..

People can do what they want to do, but I'm just saying it looks retarded. Might as well dress up like a clown..

Cops, soldiers and firemen are professionals it's part of their job to be in uniform, what do they have to do with people wearing spandex or leather chaps.. Do you ever see cops on motorcycles wearing leather vests and chaps? Nope you sure don't because it's a costume..

crockett 07-09-2014 08:51 PM

I see you are getting the point, that people in specific groups have this strange need to "look" like everyone else in their little group. Yes neo nazis are a good example of a social costume.

crockett 07-09-2014 09:11 PM

Here we go, another perfect example..

3 cops in their units bicycle uniform for SF. Notice they aren't wearing nut hugging shorts or shirts that are two times too tight? Then we have their buddy whom is just riding around town in his Tour de France costume. I bet he doesn't get going over 25mph in the middle of that town, but look out he's gotta be aerodynamic.

Once again, a full leather jacket or actual leather pants will certainly protect you from road rash. However little leather vests with no sleeves (aka biker vests) aren't going to do shit. They will just get peeled right off your body because not a single biker I've ever seen actually button them up. Not to mention they have no sleeves to protect your arms.. They are nothing more than a costume for weekend warrior bikers to wear to make themselves seem cool.

Actual bikers in gangs wore them to show off their gang affiliation, but today most people wearing them are just trying to be trendy.. So they look like the rest of their little social circle. It's certainly not to protect their as because with out sleeves and with out being buttoned/zipped up it's not doing a thing, also chaps aren't doing a damn thing to stop road rash.

This will help you stop road rash..
