How long do you in general take off for vacation?

It's that day of the year again and tomorrow im flying out to asia. Will be back in the office the 2nd of June.

So thats like 3 weeks off. Now everybody outside of Europe I speak to thinks I take ridiculously long vacations. Might be so but it is often also the only days off I take in a year.

So do you consider 3 weeks long or....?

bean-aid 05-08-2014 11:47 AM

I wish i was in sweden where they take the entire summer off.

Slacker.

No, if you are in any kind of job where creativity and new ideas are part of your job description time away from work is irrelevant and actually helps.

3 weeks is a good vacation length, whenever I do 2 it never seems like quite enough. IMO it depends on how you approach it - just sitting on a beach with beer in hand, or traveling around constantly doing things.

For me the biggest downside regardless of length, is that I'm never 100% off the clock. Always gotta check in & make sure things are running smoothly, touch base with people, etc. Would love a holiday where I could truly just check the fuck out.

pornguy 05-08-2014 11:57 AM

We were taking 3 weeks but have a longer one planned this year.

I can not just go to an island and do nothing, we always travel around most of the time and only the last few days we do some bounty island before we head back.

As for being off the clock, I am "allowed" to bring the ipad and that's it. No laptop or something or I would be working whenever I find a wifi :D

VikingMan 05-08-2014 12:01 PM

I take frequent 2-3 day mini vacations in the wilderness and various state parks.

3 weeks is fine. 2 is my average, but sometimes it either feels too long, or too short.

So i think it just depends on the location and current state of mind to be honest...

location sure matters, not going to travel 18 hours with a 2 year old just to fly back 12 days later. Feels too short :D

DWB 05-08-2014 12:16 PM

I live in Thailand, every day is like a vacation.

Vendzilla 05-08-2014 12:21 PM

I just did 2 weeks in China, besides being amazing, it took a week to get back into a sleep schedule coming back, going there was easy.
Where at in Asia are you going?
I've been to Japan, Philippines, Guam, Korea and Singapore

Philippines and 3 days of Beijing on our way back

been to Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia and Borneo before.

KickAssJesse 05-08-2014 12:27 PM

Nice, I usually take a couple of days off since I'm not much of a traveling guy. Most time taken away from work is probably a week, but it usually consist of working still.

blackmonsters 05-08-2014 12:29 PM

If I count the time it takes to go to the liquor store then it's like 15 minutes plus the rest of the day.

:(

RyuLion 05-08-2014 12:31 PM

I don't need one..I have my fun when I travel anywhere I go..

pimpmaster9000 05-08-2014 12:39 PM

going on vacation for less than a month is just a crime...when you fly like 10-12 hours just to get there and the first 2 weeks passes in a flash, then you need the 2 more weeks comfort zone to really relax...

a true vacation is when you are ready to go back the next day and you are not depressed and shit because you have to return...this takes time...

This winter I did a road trip down thru Mexico because I wanted to see certain stuff on the way to my destination (redwoods, Big Sur, etc). It was scenic but there was some hard fucking driving especially South of the Border, so even though I was down there a month it was always in the back of my head I'd have to do that bitchass drive again on the return trip. Impossible to totally relax, if I ever did that again the vacation would have to be like 3 months to make the drive worthwhile.

J. Falcon 05-08-2014 12:43 PM

10 to 14 days.

Probably depends on what you do during your vacation too. Since we travel around a lot it's probably less totally relaxing than just laying on a beach somewhere.

You should hit Myanmar before it totally opens up and gets ruined. NOW is the time to go. Laos too. You can still see ancient SE Asia there without all the commercialism.

Had a chat with a budy who went to Myanmar last year and he said the same.

Out of the places I went to in Asia I liked Cambodia best becuase of it's pureness, so thanks for the mention of Myanmar.

Laos is on the list however I hear wildlife wise it's pretty emptied out by China?

DatingCamTube 05-08-2014 12:57 PM

Have not had vacation since 2009 :(

Tasty1 05-08-2014 12:57 PM

I usually went 4 weeks and travel around. Now i am travelling almost 3 years but i stay longtime in 1 place and keep working :) Just stayed 7 months in Thailand.

Cambodia got much of its "pureness" from the Khmer Rouge unfortunately. Earlier this week was talking to a friend of mine who lives there, he was saying how almost all pre-1990s modern cultural stuff got wiped out in the purges, and that for a lot of folks the period beforehand is mostly a blank.

Yes I can see that.

The country got a cruel past not even that long ago. Went to the Tuol Sleng museum and just walking around there is unreal when you realise what happenend in that country.

The people however were amazing. My gf and I like to go out and eat at the local places and we met a teacher who we chatted with and had the most amazing stories but was still so positive in life.

Lykos 05-08-2014 01:20 PM

You won't work at all ? 0 ?
Then it's long:) Better few times per year, shorter.

I do travel a lot, but i always work on holidays. I do take like 3-4 months off the home tough .

Well I do my mails and all but thats it yes ;)

incredibleworkethic 05-08-2014 01:26 PM

I get 7 paid weeks lol yes I work fulltime factory so its arguably not as cool as those doing adult full time and rich.

wdsguy 05-08-2014 01:27 PM

Hey Road, it's been awhile.

Usually we work 1 - 2 months and then we travel for 3-4 weeks. Although its never a true vacation as we still work 2-4 hrs a day. Where are you going in Asia?

PR_Glen 05-08-2014 01:33 PM

I haven't taken more than 6 days off in a row in the last 5 years or so. It's not as bad as it sounds, i tend to take shorter trips in general 4-5 days mostly over weekends. It just works out better with my gf's schedule that way.

I don't have anything against taking more time off it just hasn't come up for a while. When i finally get going on some vacationing in europe that will change of course.

arock10 05-08-2014 01:38 PM

3-7 days every month is usually what I average. Don't want to be gone too long, but don't want to work for too long and get burned out. Further away trips I will go for longer but those don't happen as often

Nick-Mindgeek 05-08-2014 01:42 PM

By North American Standards... 3weeks vacation is on the longer side.

My family in Europe thinks 3weeks is a warmup...

Either way you're a SLACKER ! :thumbsup:thumbsup

CourtneyR 05-08-2014 01:46 PM

one week is usually my limit. feels like there is to much to catch up on if its much longer.

Rochard 05-08-2014 01:46 PM

Usually only a week at a time. This is mostly because my wife works and we have a kid in school.

We tend to take smaller short vacations to Southern California to see family.

Vacations are a huge pain in the ass for me. Kid wants to do one thing, wife wants to do another, and I just want to spend time on the beach.

TurboAngel 05-08-2014 01:47 PM

I got away for the week of the 4th of July and sometimes a week at X-Mass time. Both trip are all ways to NJ as my family is there.

SekobA 05-08-2014 01:56 PM

12 to 15 day.I go usually in summer coz i like to see some necked asses!

mineistaken 05-08-2014 01:59 PM

I would do the opposite - three 1 week vacations instead of one 3 week. Reason is simple - this way you get much more rest, as one week is fully enough to relax from work.
Meaning you would get 3 breaks instead of just 1 per year.
This is what I strongly believe and preach to everybody. 1 + 1 + 1 is way better than just 3 in a row.

See, that doesn't work for me. 1 week *isn't* enough to fully relax, I need at least 2 otherwise it really feels like things are cut short.

Struggle4Bucks 05-08-2014 02:07 PM

A week now and then.....

.....locked up in the horse-stable....
.....pissing and taking a shit in a bucket...
.....two meals a day...

after one day i really want to go back to work...
but hey... the girl wants some time for herself
too sometimes... can't blame her for that...

kittykatt 05-08-2014 02:08 PM

9 days does it for me, still end up working every day though :thumbsup

Exactly the same here

Besides that I won't be able to do a proper trip through many time zones in just 1 week. If you want to see something of the world 1 week won't cut it.

3 weeks is impressive considering you've only been at Payserve a few months. I saw something on TV awhile back where an HR VP said employees should avoid taking long vacations (more than 2 weeks) because companies will try to find someone else to fill your duties while you're away. If you're away too long, they may find they really don't need you and eliminate your job.

How much do you relax after 1 week? Even if not fully, maybe 2 not fully is better than 1 fully relaxed?
Lets say it takes you 2 weeks to 100% relax and 1 week makes you relax up to 90% (meaning not fully, but pretty good). Maybe 2 times * 90% relaxation is better than 1 time of 100% and then no second time.
2 times 90% is better than 1 time 100% and 1 time 0%.
If you catch my point of view here :)
