So yesterday somebody blew my mind and didn't know what Columbus Day was and who it commemorated. I realized that while I know Columbus is credited with discovering the Americas I didn't know much more than a Schoolhouse Rock sketch about the man and his voyages so I wiki'ed him.

Who said history has to be dry, this is a hot story. Columbus took his childhood friend with him on his second voyage and here's what the friend wrote in his diary about one incident, Penthouse Forum style circa 1492.

I did not research it so just random guess - did Vikings declare that they discovered new world? Maybe they just landed but did not realize what they discovered. And Columbus comprehended that first thats why he is the one who gets credit?
