Arizona executes its oldest inmate for 1978 killing

Arizona has executed the oldest person on its death row for killing a man in 1978 during a robbery.

71-year-old Edward Harold Schad Jr. was given a lethal dose of pentobarbital and was pronounced dead at 10:12 a.m. at the state prison in Florence.

Schad was convicted twice of killing 74-year-old Lorimer "Leroy" Grove of Bisbee, in rural southeastern Arizona.

Grove was last seen leaving Bisbee pulling a trailer with his new Cadillac on the way to visit his sister in Washington state. He was found dead with a rope knotted around his neck on Aug. 9, 1978, south of Prescott.

Investigators say Schad drove Grove's car across the country for a month, used his credit cards and forged a check from the victim's bank account.

Schad was originally scheduled to be executed in March. It was postponed when the Supreme Court denied a request to lift a lower court's order to block the execution. The high court reinstated the punishment back in June.

Schad's execution was Arizona's 35th since 1992. His death leaves 121 people on the death row in the state, including two women.

This is how we should do it.

Let them rot in prison for forty years, letting them get ass raped three or four times daily, then kill them before they are ready to die. Perfect.

That should be a new sentence. Forty years in prison, then the state kills you if you live that long. Go to hell with a wide asshole.

This oft repeated idea of gleefully letting prisoners get punished by rape is ridiculous and offensive for some of those who have worked to reduce sexual violence in society. Firstly, there are a lot of people in prison for relatively minor or at least non-violent crimes, not to mention quite a few who are innocent of the crime they were convicted of. Is it fair to let people like these be anally gang raped and possibly spread HIV or other diseases to knowing that most of them are going to be released to the community again?

Imagine that you had a young son or brother or nephew or cousin who wasn't a hardcore criminal or gang banger but who fucked up and did something stupid that he had to do a little state time for. Those are the kind of young men who are going to be victimized by older veteran jailbirds, gangsters and lifers. The whole prison for profit system is a pretty fucked up concept as there is an incentive for police and the justice system to put people away in prison for bullshit things like drug possession.

well said, people get so separated from things like this but if you think about it having family or a friend locked up for something ridiculous isn't all that far fetched and the idea of accepted corporal punishment is small minded.

Good, because that's where assholes who endanger the lives of others belong. ALL drunk drivers should be in prison.

I used to be all for the death penalty. Kill someone, and society will kill you back. Simple.

But that's not really a punishment, is it? No pain, no suffering, just done. We'll even feed you the meal of your choice on your final day, like a little party.

Fuck that. Dark cell, bread and water for the next forty years. No cable television. No tennis. No sunlight. No reading material, no visitors, no conversation, no nothing.

I am not saying everyone in prison should be treated this way. But if you are in for rape or murder, you deserve nothing more than a dark cell for the rest of your life.

I too used to be for the death penalty until it came to light that there were hundreds of cases of people being sent to death row who were later exonerated by DNA or other evidence. The justice system unfortunately is pretty imperfect. Even with crimes like murder or rape there are many degrees of evil. Does a guy with no criminal record who kills some drunk idiot accidentally in a fist fight on the street in front of a bar deserve the same torture you are proposing as a serial killer who tortures and eats his victims?

Same with rape. Does a guy whose attorney advises him to take a plea over a date rape with he said she said evidence about whether it was consensual or the female was just a little too drunk and regretted it after she was slut shamed by her friends the next day deserve the same sentence as a career criminal who conks an old lady over the head with a metal pipe and raped and beat her for four hours in her apartment?

Your overly simplistic and harsh punishments and don't make sense and won't work. Even our flawed justice system recognizes different degrees of crimes and has a lot of latitude for sentencing based on the individual facts and circumstances as well as other mitigating factors such as the person's criminal history or lack thereof.

The rich get off and the poor get railroaded. It's a simple matter of affording legal representation.

My problem is people go to prison and it's more of a vacation than it is a punishment. Cable TV and hanging out outside playing basketball and tennis like a fucking country club; Forget that already.

Prison is supposed to be punishment, not a country club. And we need to make it a punishment.

I think this is shit. Execute a guy that is virtually deceased anyway. Why would you not do it back in the early 80's? Why wait 30 odd years.
I expect he had a pretty good life in prison, all this talk about ass fucking is nonsense.

Have you even seen a documentary on tv about what life is like inside a prison? It hardly looks like a country club, at least not here in the U.S..

My mother was a juror on a death penalty case in the late 80's and they found him guilty and sentenced him to the chair, he is still sitting on death row.

Someone selling a dime bag of weed does not end up in the same place (or population) as a murderer on death row. Surprised that such a basic concept is foreign to you.

Why wasn't he executed in 1978?

Here is the potential problem with doing this. First, sometimes innocent people are convicted. This can be changed if we make it mandatory for any and all DNA evidence that could be collected to be used during the trial. No more trying to get evidence withheld because it could hurt your case. Both sides have to take the good with the bad. There would need to be some serious changes to our justice system.

But the occasional innocent person aside, let's talk about the people that deal with these people. When you cage someone and treat them in this way it won't be long until they basically turn into an animal. Being exposed to that kind of thing day in and day out and dealing with those type of people can royally fuck up the prison guards. Many prison guards end up messed up with just regular prison. We will now have a whole new level of problems with them.

Lastly, it likely won't cause a reduction in rape or murder. People who commit those kinds of crimes are fucked up in the head and in most cases they don't consider the potential consequences of their actions. Could it cut down on armed robberies? Maybe. Maybe people that would commit those types of crimes will find themselves deciding not to use a a weapon so the chances of someone dying are reduced, but is that potentially small reduction worth being known as the country that keeps hundreds of people caged up and treated like animals?
