That's kinda funny... except not so much for the parents.

J. Falcon 08-19-2013 08:05 AM

Some of my friends from that region never even moved out, so yes I would say parents from that part of the country are more lenient when it comes to putting up with leaching kids.

I think it is terrifying!

The reality here is being lost in old stereotypes of young people being lazy and wanting to do this. That's garbage.

Reality :

1. It cost over $125K to get a decent college education in that part of the country.

2. Real estate in that part of the country is impossible, even for people with jobs paying $40k per year.

3. They don't really have anywhere to go!

4. This shit is coming to a town near you soon. Get ready.

.

Smart parents downsize into a smaller home when the kids leave so this cant happen.

SexKey Scott 08-19-2013 08:53 AM

Yeah.. that is easy to hear. New Jersey?s property taxes are by far the highest in the nation, and net property taxes for the average New Jersey family making about $70,000 a year jumped from $6,244 to $7,410 over the past three years. So much bureaucratic politician bullshit has put our state deeper and deeper in dept year after year.

Governor Christie was the first governor to really do what he claimed during the election race to try and take on some of the big unions. In NJ, one of the biggest was the teachers union - which is ridiculous how it is run and he took it to them to force some cuts. (There is something like 615 school districts - in comparison the state of NY has 690 something.)

If people have to move back in w/ their parents.. it's probably not the lack of work - it's probably b/c they can't afford to buy.. :2 cents:

scubadiver626 08-19-2013 09:14 AM

I realize mine are incredibly young to say this... but I want to encourage them to buy assets first, maybe even start a business. Not join the rat race or "poor dad" scenario and get stuck in a mortgage/car etc...

I realize kids aren't a huge source of joy for everyone all the time, but I always want to maintain an open door policy. they need a fucking home base to launch from.

I would kill someone I like for only 7k a year in property taxes, and I do not live in a mansion, The CONDO I am looking to buy is 9k a year in property taxes.

Lykos 08-19-2013 10:16 AM

I would never let my kid move back in... fuck it...

slapass 08-19-2013 10:20 AM

I doubt it is student loan debt, most of the people I have met from jersey couldn't tie their shoes let alone go to college.

Choopa_Pardo 08-19-2013 10:22 AM

Expensive as hell to live in this state.

I should move to Vermont already.

That also plays a major role in real estate markets and housing prices as well. Now... not so much.

We maintain an open door policy as well. They are your kids, help to get them on their feet. :2 cents:

I've talked to a good number of people who proudly admit to living with the rents.
It's not such a shameful thing these days.

Just get use to it. Also expect the parents to move in with the kids after they finally manage to move out

ASIAN STYLE!

My mom almost had a breakdown when I told her that I wanted to leave home after I graduated college. This was (and still is) an unheard of concept in many Asian-American families.

Unless they live in their parents' basement.
