i gotta say, though she is not at all in my music genre - i saw her on SNL a few weeks ago (or so) and she is fantastic live. her voice is very strong and stable, she projects well. i was impressed.

having said that, i'd hit it.

Last winter/spring I heard 'Complicated' for the first time, I didn't have a clue who sang it, how old she was, was she cute, whether the singer wrote the song, who produced it - all I knew is that is was one of the best pop songs I had heard in a very long time, pop music is it's own genre, you can mock it but it's as much a craft as any other artistic endeavour.

Is she a record company's invention, totally fabricated by the machine run by middle aged music biz weasels? Probably. If so they've done a great job. I give them all props.

As for Avril herself, she does the job, pop singers don't need great voices. She has the voice that fits her music perfectly. She sounded like shit tonight performing live but I've seen her on AOL doing an acoustic session and she has a nice passable voice for a teenaged girl. She could be in 'Annie' or any of those type of Broadway musicals, it's that type of voice. She got lucky, somebody saw the raw material to create Sk8Ter GRRL, and a year later she is the most famous Canadian on the planet.

I didn't listen to her live tonight, but I've heard her live in the past - she can't sing. She's flat all over the place on her own damn song. There was obviously some serious "SnapTune (tm)" action going on in that studio.

I don't consider her a good artist, but if her sheer existance can provoke someone to write such an emotional and intricate description of why she sucks, then she's accomplished her goal albeit it unintentional or unwarranted.
