Cars had starts on the floor? I remember high beams being on the floor, but that's about it.

Fuck starter buttons. Both our cars had a crank handle on the front.

Same here. I DO however remember having to start a 65 Chevy Nova with a screwdriver under the hood on the starter because I had no keys :1orglaugh

That "switch" is actually a small pedal with mechanical linkage that engages the starter gear into the teeth on the flywheel. At the end of it's travel (after the teeth are engaged) it trips a switch that spins the starter motor.

It's the mechanical version of an electrical 'Bendix'.

i remember the choke... was always a weird thing to me....
