    yes it's true... learned drive in an old truck with a stater button on the floor and a choke!

                                                          That "switch" is actually a small pedal with mechanical linkage that engages the starter gear into the teeth on the flywheel. At the end of it's travel (after the teeth are engaged) it trips a switch that spins the starter motor.

                                                          It's the mechanical version of an electrical 'Bendix'.
