I got my duct tape. I'm ready for those terrorist bitches!

Are you the MacGyver of your neighborhood?

Using only items commonly found in a household and a few hundred dollars spending budget, what would be a way to achieve reasonable protection in a normal middle class home against common terrorist attacks? How long would these measures protect one for?

stocktrader23 02-14-2003 05:00 PM

Umm, I could punch a hole in a window covered in duct tape. If this is supposed to help when a bomb hits good luck.

Jer 02-14-2003 05:02 PM

God is Brazilian, we are safe here.

NO WAR

Scott McD 02-14-2003 05:02 PM

Yeah, we haven't been told of all this 'duct tape' shit...

Don't think it would really catch on either...

TheDr 02-14-2003 05:03 PM

I saw a story (local TV) about using duct tape in the advent of a radiological attack, cracked me up.

Crap I need to learn to spill

funkmaster 02-14-2003 05:06 PM

... when the nuclear bomb explodes ... just duck and cover ... youŽll be fine !!

ADL Colin 02-14-2003 05:08 PM

"Duck and Cover". Man, I was really afraid of "the Russians" when I was a kid.

Wizzo 02-14-2003 05:09 PM

Damn, I got mine, wrapped my body from head to toe...I'm safe!

progex 02-14-2003 05:37 PM

The duct tape rumor was hilarious... I can't believe there are people so stupid to go out and buy some duct tape.

For those of who missed it, but would love to see what all the old folks are talking about, go rent the Atomic Cafe.

It's awesome. I like how it shows the footage of the house being atomized and then kids just ducking and covering against a curb. They play the house footage in slowmotion, and you can see the paint, start to blister a little, then it smokes and ignites, then the house starts to bow inwards until it can't even hold shape anymore, and boom, the whole house gets blown away. Then on the same video it tells kids that if they are riding their bikes that they should get off and take cover under a blanket or next to a curb, or other concrete shelter. Yeah, that should keep you safe.

Assuming your house will still stand after a blast and assuming
that the duct tape really seals off your house for any contagious
material and assuming that while the contagious stuff will stay
outside while fresh clean and healthy oxygen can still come in
do you really think you can stay in that room for lets say the next
60 years?

NoCarrier 02-14-2003 06:43 PM

You can use duct tape for your ass, in case you have diarrhea.

If not, well, I don't believe anthrax or ricin or whatever WMD will ever be used by terrorists. You need a lot of knowledge to be able to spread it correctly (AND IT IS DAMN HARD TO DO SO). It is fucking hard to spread that kind of stuff even if you are a professionnal a scientist or whatever! I would be more worried about the flu than anything else. And I am being dead serious.

If you get smallpox, you have 33% chance of dying. Compared to the flu, smallpox is horrible. No, the flu is much better. Each year, influenza and influenza-related pneumonia kill an estated 20,000 to 40,000 people in the United States.

With smallpox, imagine 30% of the united stated wiped out in a couple of months if nobody gets the vaccine. In the event of a nuclear war back in the 80's. Soviet union prepared warheads full of smallpox to kill the american survivors of a nuclear war.

Now, do you still think that the flu is the same?

And you don't get those with flu:

I've read articles about it. It's not like smallpox, you can't infect everyone if there is an attack. And it's VERY difficult to spread it.

LadyMischief 02-14-2003 07:07 PM

My grandmother has three solutions for everything. Duct tape, WD40 and Krazy Glue. I'm sure those could get us through terrorist attacks, too.

detoxed 02-14-2003 07:32 PM

duct tape can you used to afro-engineer many things.

I was just wondering... everyone's laughing that duct tape doesn't work...... But I was wondering, if you seal your whole house off and its air tight, how are the germs going to get inside the house? Or are the germs so small they can crawl under the duct tape? I'm really paranoid :helpme :helpme

And won't you suffocate, if all the windows are duct taped for a long time??

sumphatpimp 02-14-2003 09:47 PM

instead of all this comotion, why not just duct tape the mouth on that yo-yo in the white house?

he don't know what the hell he is doing, and he will not get reelected

no matter how much his daddy rigs the election

You would have a hard time sealing a house to protect against this stuff. not only windows to seal but also the underneath, any vents (furnace) any water/sewer pipes and their venting. And If you did manage to seal a house 100% air tight, yes you would eventually run out of oxygen.
The news in my area said to get plastic and duct tape it over the windows. This would just slow down the process.
Fuck it, if I am going to die I sure don't want to drag it out.

Gemini 02-15-2003 04:05 AM

Best option is to seal yourself into the kitchen with some covered 5 gal buckets and TP. Make sure to have quite a few gallons of water already filled. Depending on thew size of the kitchen will tell you how long you have oxygen. Depends on how many folks are in there as well.

Biological - chemical would pass by within a few hours unless the air is dead still outside (which would not even allow the stuff to ever be launched right? lol)

Any atomic weapon they might have in the states undoubtedly wouldn't be anything large enough to do the decimation like the training films show.

Odds are in your favor to survive it at any rate. We lived in the times while in elementary school, we had the duck and cover drills for atomic attacks. Scared the bejesus out of us. So after they quit having us do THAT drill, they changed it to a 'tornado drill'... like we'd not be any more afraid of THAT one. :D

Come to think of it, you have LESS odds in a tornado than any attack from the tango...errr terrosists. :winkwink:

Now if we can survive the foot of SNOW we are in process of getting...
