Brits: What do the terms "skive" and "skint" mean?

So I was talking to this local woman the other day, she lives here but is originally from London England. In the course of our conversation she mentions these terms "skive" and "skint". I just played along so as not to seem like I'm not up on my British what's-what. We can't have her thinking I'm UK illiterate now can we?

For skive she was talking about work and taking time off, so I'm assuming it's a slang term for calling in sick when not sick? Like skiving off?

As for skint, she used it as in saying I am "skint".... I think referring to my bad back and less than 100% condition because of it. Like just a less intense way of saying "you're buggered"?

Christ you Brits and your slang. You Aussies are no better either. :D

B.Barnato 08-17-2012 01:57 PM

Skint = Broke

CDSmith 08-17-2012 02:01 PM

Yup, that's me, broke. :D

Ahhh, she must have gotten that idea because I told her I just had my entire roof replaced on my house which cost me nearly $10K.

I'll have to take her out for steak & lobster.

Thanks.

skive - to bunk off. ie, rather than go to work you stay at home.

DVTimes 08-17-2012 02:03 PM

and yes, skint means to have no spondoolies. ie, i have no dosh.

DVTimes 08-17-2012 02:05 PM

my fave is minger.

as in, she is a minger.

Bunk off. Isn't that just replacing one confusing term with yet another?

During my hospital working years through the 80's and 90's we used to say you were calling in sick, or my favorite... taking a mental health day.

So skive I got right then. Good.

Now back to work so I'm not so skint...

Scott McD 08-17-2012 02:10 PM

Another fucking minger!

Skive is like 'skip' or 'purposely miss'.

You skive off work when you try and escape early without anyone seeing.

Edit - Oh, looks like you got that one already! I'm just learning the lingo myself.

I will have to avoid this thread if you are having him post pics of chicks. That is never good.

EddyTheDog 08-17-2012 02:14 PM

You skive off work when you take time off because you feel lazy.

Skint, is having no money.

You are often skint because you are skiving.....

Yes I really should have thought that one through before asking.

Well in this case she'd be the one skiving, because she's the one with the jay-oh-bee. She's also got a buggered up knee and lower back, so I'm trying to tell her she wouldn't be skiving if she's got legitimate health ailments. But she seems to think skiving includes any sick call for any reason.

she sounds like the perfect employee come to think of it.

i suspect that 'sucking on a fag' may have a different meaning in the usa.

Jel 08-17-2012 02:38 PM

surly one would use 'barasic' in such a case.

"i am now barasic"

Jel 08-17-2012 02:47 PM

no, a surly one wouldn't, nor anyone else.

I think they (the writers, producers) knew that going in.

We say wanker over here too. When someone's a wanker they're pretty much a fucking wanker, no matter what part of the planet they're on, no?

If you visit London make sure you select your preferred language on the ATM's

Wanker is, i believe, the 4th most offensive word to Brits according to the Broadcasting standards people.

helterskelter808 08-18-2012 08:02 AM

After "fuck", "cunt" and "dentist".

Interesting. I wonder where "lawyer" ranks on that list.

Edit: of course you don't use the term lawyer over there do you? It's solicitor.

Over here you can get arrested for soliciting.

i like some scotish words:

i pumped her (i had sex with her)

Sunny Day 08-18-2012 03:30 PM

skive

skiv
Cool term, wished we knew that at the Post Office.
Friend of mine ran out of excuses for being late or not coming in. His grandmother died about 30 times. He donated blood almost weekly for 1/2 a day off. He called and volunteered for jury duty.
All he had left was "aliens in their UFO kidnapped me."
Another buddy told his supervisor he couldn't come in early for mandatory overtime as he was wrapping Easter presents,

Skive, would have been a great excuse, as most of our supervisors dropped out of grade school. I'm still trying to figure out how they sorted mail, as I don't think they could read.

Because the word fuck folds into many grammatical categories. As a transital verb for instance, "John fucked Shirley". As an intransitive verb; "Shirley fucks". It's meaning is not always sexual, it can be used as an adjective such as; John's doing all the fucking work. As part of an adverb; "Shirley talks too fucking much", as an adverb enhancing an adjective; Shirley is fucking beautiful. As a noun; "I don't give a fuck". As part of a word: "abso-fucking-lutely" or "in-fucking-credible". Or as almost every word in a sentence: "fuck the fucking fuckers!".

Where as wanker doesn't have the same range.

That's why fuck gets more airtime.

Possibly, but your advert on usenet asking for men to let you fuck them up the arse would be understood by people from the UK or the US.

I'm from Plymouth originally and can confirm that us Janners would NEVER use that saying...

[confuse mode] however we'd call you anything to wind you up if you were some thick Grecian cunt from Exeter [/confuse mode]

I like the "you winding me up?" expression us Brits use. :)
