Pussy Riot -- Guilty

Girls Band and Russian provocateurs Pussy Riot have been found guilty of hooliganism, motivated by religious hatred (and calling out Putin).

Freedom of speech is alive and well in Russia. Can't wait for the sentencing ...

AFP Pussy Riot verdict

just a punk 08-17-2012 04:57 AM

That was predictable. Isn't it?

P.S. Where did you get the "(and calling out Putin)" part?

Ecchi22 08-17-2012 05:15 AM

And we people still think we have freedom :)

Which is why, on the eve of their sentencing on charges of hooliganism, many Russians would feel no sympathy for the three young, skinny girls imprisoned since February, when they sang a "punk prayer" that asked the Virgin Mary to expel President Vladimir Putin from the Kremlin, using a traditional intercession prayer in Orthodoxy, and a church, for their act of political satire.

The three women in the band, who have been in jail for more than five months because of a guerrilla performance denouncing President Vladimir Putin in Moscow's main cathedral, face a maximum seven years in prison.

MOSCOW, Aug 16 (Reuters) - Whatever verdict a Russian court passes on Friday on the women from punk band Pussy Riot who taunted the Kremlin from a church altar, President Vladimir Putin has signalled he is no more willing than before to brook dissent as he begins a third term.

Of course, there are wonderful Machiavellian (or should we say, Rasputineque) opportunities here for Putin. By pardoning the ?criminal? rock band, he can show that, underneath that iron exterior, there beats the heart of a bear (a bear mommy, of course, as this is still the Motherland). ?Mother Bear gets quite angry sometimes when her cubs are naughty,? he might announce through the Kremlin?s spokesman. ?But mommy loves you. Remember, anything I do to you is for your own good, darlings.?

Or, he can let the Russian Orthodox Church hold the bag. The church?allegedly the ?offended party? here?has given no quarter, Christian charity be damned. The bearded zealots (and that?s just the women) feel violated by Pussy Riot?s sacrilege and want the full force of the law to rain down upon their harlotty heads in this world, before their thongs are burned off of them in a fiery, eternal afterlife in hell.

This is the ?mother church? of Orthodox Christianity. Nice.

The bottom line is that Russia is still Russia and run by Mr. Putin.

Be careful when you criticize him if you are in Russia.

just a punk 08-17-2012 05:55 AM

What was that??? I mean where is the translation of the court verdict? I didn't notice any mention of Putin there. Perhaps because I know Russian and can read it in native language, but you can't? Am I right?

Because they did it in church. Recently FEMEN did the same anti-Putin protest action on the Red Square in front of Kremlin and they were not even arrested. Why???

Professor, please answer my simple question above.

Their whole act is to provoke. Well it worked.

And the social change should be anyone is allowed to "party" in historic churches? I'll bet if they preformed on the church's back lawn nothing would have happened.

this seems like more of a fine thing rather than 2 years in prison thing.. Make them do some charity shows instead or something.

Is it ok to do something like that inside Buckingham? The UK is a free country, right?

just a punk 08-17-2012 09:46 AM

Man, we all live in prison. Some do understand it and act accordingly, other idiots - don't.

Actually this is not the end. Just wait a bit and you'll see: Putin will give them a personal pardon (as a president). That's just a game. Pussy Riot wanted to be famous dancing in church, Putin want to earn some political benefits on their action. The result: both sides are happy.

Learn the difference between a church and a building occupied by the head of state.

Clue: Churches are those places your country was happily destroying not too long ago.

You live in a backward, barbaric mafia state that has never had a nanosecond of real democracy in its entire existence. He lives in a country with eight centuries of Parliamentary history. Learn that difference too.

RedGlamourStudio 08-17-2012 11:34 AM

Fuck, 2 years in prison for song against Putin :(
text of song below, to use google for translate

So what's the difference? Can the do the same in the church of Vatican? BTW, the girls get nothing for doing this on a Red Square in front of the the head of state.

Once again: I don't support the 2-year in prison verdict for such an action, but I can't agree it was just a political performance. Want to make it political - go to the Red Square then.

No, they wouldn't be allowed to do it at the Vatican, but I seriously doubt they'd face jail. In fact I doubt anyone would face jail, let alone two years inside, even doing it at Buckingham Palace or the White House.

They might be shot attempting it, and they'd definitely be arrested, but they wouldn't do any time. OTOH, link to TV shows online and you'll do twice as long in jail. Upsetting corporations is the most serious crime in 'free' countries.

That's how I saw this playing out as well.

Putin had already signaled as much by going on the record with words to the effect that they "shouldn't be punished too harshly".

But now I'm not so sure.

If the public pressure get's too intense, Putin will likely leave them in jail (for the short term at least) so as not to be perceived as having caved in to the same.

It's like that tennis player used to say: Image is everything.

The time is running out fast for him. The girls have already served a quarter of their prison time, so according to the Russian laws, they will be free after a another half of a year on parole.

P.S. That video is so scary and wrong on many levels. The police deal with him like he's a serial killer. and even then: no one would sentenced them to prison time, maybe a fine. for jail they would need to set the church on fire.

Putins Russia is moving backwards into stalinistic like times

Barry-xlovecam 08-18-2012 09:03 AM

Real simple: Pussy Riot backed Putin's administration into a corner and the outcome is a major embarrassment internationally for the Putin government in Russia.

Had they been arrested for misdemeanor public disorder, fined, and sentenced to time served -- they whole thing would have been forgotten. But to charge them with Felony Hooliganism and sentence them to two years only shows the government's own weakness and appeasement of religious furor -- that is just plain stupid.

basic thing is that most of them never had proper wide education since it was not free for all like in socialism. This means that generations of people were easy to control through information serving (medias) and they were formed in a way government wanted.Personally, I don't believe in democracy because it can't work. Actually it can but in Scandinavian countries that doesn't not have enemies around every corner.
