I don't have the 10 year history, but i've been here for a few months and I've read a lot more than I've written. Takes little more than a disagreement over what copyright does and doesn't mean to justify trying to get someone fired. I don't have to agree with him or you or anyone else on the board, but that doesn't entitle me to get all vengeful over it.

In a nutshell the only posts Gideon ever makes is about copyright stuff and almost all of them are some kind of pro-piracy/pro-torrent ruling or news. The exception was when he took time away from copyright stuff to post a thread where he bashed the people who raised money to help a woman who had breast cancer get a breast implant. Here is that thread if you care to read it. Gideon starts off bashing an event, then he attacks me. When it finally is clear that he is acting like a douche he goes after the technicalities of the event and he even brings up copyright stuff here because he is obsessed. It is actually a sad thread.

It isn't a debate with him. He hammers his point of view at you and that is the end of the discussion. His views on fair use are skewed, he constantly makes claims that he will never back up or prove and when you don't agree with him he calls you a moron, an idiot, a liar etc.

Every chance he has been given he has sided with criminals and pirates. He is not in this industry. He admitted he has no clients in this industry and doesn't market to this industry.

Eventually people just got sick of his constantly championing pirates, pirate sites and pro-piracy crap and has my mom used to tell me when I was a kid eventually you reap what you sow.

Maybe someone can give me an example of where he actually messed with someone else's ability to make a living. Disagreeing with someone on a message board usually doesn't have that effect.

Gideon believes that fair use gives him the right to buy some content then upload/seed it to torrent sites as a form of "backing it up to the swarm." He claims it is his fair use right to get free redundant back ups of content and that is all he is doing.

To me, and I think most people in this forum, that is piracy. That is distributing content that he doesn't have the right to distribute.

When you say shit like that to people who make and sell content for a living they tend to get a little pissed off.

It wasn't just disagreeing. It was constant repetitive consistent antagonizing and eventually someone's going to get sick of it and respond in a way you may not have expected. He kept poking and poking and poking while laughing at them about people stealing from them, and mocking their businesses, wishing they failed. It was just a neverending stream.

I'll end up being way off topic, but that thread you linked me to.. I didn't see the episode, so I'm not fully informed, all the info I have is from that thread.

So first, before someone misquotes me or tries to misrepresent me, I do care about cancer and cancer patients, my brother lost a nut and my step-mom lost a tit, so this actually hits pretty close to home.

It seems to me that your thread was largely around the use off the term 'charity', which in the US is a legal term that describes a 501c3 registered entity. Unlike some other countries, I don't believe there are limits as to what percentage of money raised needs to go to whatever cause vs administrative overhead, so that event could have been through a 501c3 organization. Either way, the claimed financial data looks pretty bad, although it got the job done, so kudos on that. If I was from a country where a charity had to show 80% or whatever of funds going to whatever cause, I'd probably take exception with the ratio.

Otherwise, it didn't take long for the discussion to fall apart and not really related to anything, I wouldn't say that either side was representing themselve in a very positive light.

I understand that you don't like the guy's opinions and what he advocates for, but that doesn't really stop you from making money. Also, that is an extreme example, and not one that I think the law agrees with in the USA (keep in mind that in Canada, you pay what is essentially a piracy tax on recordable media, which more or less legalizes the sharing of content belonging to business that receive money from those taxes, kind of like a compulsory license).

There is a lot of misconception here as to what fair use is what what it isn't, and I'm surprised at how content producers don't understand the laws in place that affect them. Copyright is a pretty complex set of laws, and they aren't necessarily written to always benefit the producers. I've called out a few of these mistakes in other threads but sometimes I feel like I'm just pissing in the wind.

Funny, when I was pasting that PDF link a few posts above, I was thinking someone was going to say that, simply because I never see other people giving reference to back up a claim, but GG posted a few in recent threads. I guess I can't stop you from thinking what you want, but I'd rather you took issue with something I said instead of applying some preconceived notion filter to my posts. Someone in another thread decided to put me on their ignore list because they couldn't understand what I said or disagreed with it so much that they couldn't bear to hear anything else I said, and that's sad but I'm fine with it. Covering your ears and shouting "lalala" isn't the way I want to go through life, but I won't judge.

The way I understand the event was that it was a content shoot/gathering of some sort and as an aside they also raised some money for someone in need. It wasn't a formal charity event and it likely wasn't a non-profit event.

I took offense at first because Gideon acted like it wasn't a worthy cause and to me it just showed his true colors. He is always smug and arrogant and this finally revealed him for who he was. It shows him in his truest form. First he bashes the event as a whole. when called out he corrects that and then moves on to bashing the way in which the event was put together. He then moves on to attacking me. If you don't stop him or just leave he will go on and on and on. He eventually pummels you into submission and will just deflect and redirect until he finally wears you.

I do admit that I acted poorly in that thread as well. Gideon used to have a way of getting under my skin. These days I only respond to him for the fun of it. I have long since come to realize that debating Gideon on any subject is like punching yourself in the cock over and over. The only time it feels good is when you stop.

Payback is a bitch, but escalation is uncalled for.
